Northern Soul t-shirts
I'm not a T shirt guy, I never had the figure for it, I found Ben Sherman check shirts tend to cover up a lot of sin. Nowadays I think Teds Claudio Lugli or Blaqua designer shirt look fits the bill and without a northern soul slogan in sight.

Open your ears and your minds
Mal, A massive thumbs up for The Ideals "I got lucky" from me. Just wonderful.

Open your ears and your minds
Andy will you do me a sales tape of your cheaper stuff please. 😄 I'm often at Tim Browns Anglo American warehouse in Todmorden and there's nearly always collectors going through boxes of singles. You can also try before you buy. Bob

Open your ears and your minds
Great record indeed Jamie, W & W label mate Major Harris "Loving you more" always did it for me as well, Also a record I first heard Ian Levine play at the Mecca by The Peoples Choice "Lost & found", I know neither are unknown obscurities but would definitely sound great in a low budget, non rare set.

Poke Ruined My Life
Rick, Unfortunately I never got to hear him play but if the Hugh Boynton track is anything to go by then I have to ask myself, what the hell have I missed over the years. I never made it to Cleethorpes but Simon T's clip of it from there sounds fantastic. What a tune.

The forgotten and the forgettable
The Emotions, Bobby Wilson & Bobby Banks are all cheap. That could be the reason why they're forgotten?

Movies and Tv
Mike, I'm halfway through season 2 of FROM described as Science Fiction Horror by the makers. I was late catching on with this series. Some really interesting characters and really good monsters. A big thumbs up FROM me😃 There's a 3rd season planned. I've recently purchased 4 seasons of BANSHEE on DVD, fantastic entertainment. And I've picked up a copy of THE NIGHT OF on DVD starring John Turturro & Riz Ahmed, an excellent thriller, 8 episodes in all Top Boy is on my must watch list.

The forgotten and the forgettable
3 forgotten belters, the first is one of Richards former Va Va's spins the brilliant Bobby Wilson "Feels good" I'm reliably informed that Bobby Banks "I'm a bachelor" was a Colin Curtis spin, probably in the last hour at the Mecca. And last but certainly not least The Emotions "I can't stand no more heartaches" a forgotten Torch spin. I first heard this whilst queueing up to get into the venue, and praying that it's not too rare, thankfully it wasn't and I returned home with a copy. If it was technically possible to burn part of a record then I'd get rid of the guitar solo on Soul Sam's King Moses track

The forgotten and the forgettable
No Mick, sorry but The M.V.P'S "Turning my heartbeat up" is proper northern imho. If someone was asked to write the perfect record for a room full of soulies in a giddy frame of mind, then it would sound something like this. Unfortunately it's always used whenever Wigan is mentioned on TV but it's still a classic oldie.

Sound quality at iconic nighters
The new sound system at Keele University is the best one I've ever played on. Although it did have a sound guy twiddling with the knobs of the console at the side of the stage.

BBC Radio 6 Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of Wigan Casino with a 'Northern Soul All-Nighter'
Paul-s wrote Richard was never at any clubs post Wigan, so I named 3 of them, I could have mentioned Stafford, 100 Club, Cleethorpes, Morecombe, Sheffield, Lowton, Prestwich plus loads more, none of the ones I've mentioned are his own promotions so I'm not sure how he makes his living Geeselad is any of your business.

BBC Radio 6 Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of Wigan Casino with a 'Northern Soul All-Nighter'
Don't forget Tony Jebb started the ball rolling, before Levine, Curtis & Minshull On my first visit there I left the building completely blown away by the records Tony was playing. I think Morecombe Pier is worthy of a 1 hour special too

The forgotten and the forgettable
I'm sure World Column has been getting quite a few plays over the last few years, As for Dave Mitchell, in the 70's Simon Soussan listed Hank Jacobs "Elijah rocking with soul" for sale so I ordered a copy. A few weeks later Dave Mitchell's The Trip arrived with a note saying I'm sorry Hank Jacobs had already been sold so I thought you'd want this one. It was just starting to get played at The Mecca. I'd love to see it reactivated.

BBC Radio 6 Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of Wigan Casino with a 'Northern Soul All-Nighter'
Paul I can't defend Russ but Richard's done a lot for the scene, not only with his radio shows promoting contemporary/modern new releases, previously unreleased northern & crossover soul but some of the nights he promoted are still hailed to this day as ground breaking. Parkers Hotel in Manchester, The Howard near Chorley, The Ritz all-nighters rarest of the rare with Butch, Soul Sam, Dave Thorley, Andy Dyson, Tim Brown etc

The forgotten and the forgettable
This one from Eddie Horan "The ups and downs of a love affair" is a wonderful tune, a slice of Mecca magic. Billy Arnell isn't a good record to my ears so I'd sell it rather than bin it, Gary Lewis into the bin.

BBC Radio 6 Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of Wigan Casino with a 'Northern Soul All-Nighter'
I think a Stafford hour would have been better and more interesting than The Torch one. Don't get me wrong The Torch was my favourite all nighter but most of the big tunes were also carried forward & played at Wigan. Or better still combine The Torch & Wigan as quite a few Wigan anthems were featured at the Proms night. Having said that maybe The 100 club hour will incorporate some of The Stafford tracks but what do I know. 😀

BBC 2 - Northern Soul at the Proms - Tv Broadcast Saturday Night
I watched a movie a few weeks ago that a lot of people really enjoyed but I hated it. The soundtrack was too polished, No emotion was shown in the performance of the actors. The cinema audience was really annoying, they didn't make any noise but most were wearing I LOVE THIS MOVIE on their T shirts, how crap is that. I think I'll watch it again this afternoon and hopefully I'll hate it even more.😜

Goodbye Brighouse Ritz
I totally agree with Mach, Tony Banks was the perfect promoter and well loved DJ of that wonderful venue. A legendary venue that's gone but will never be forgotten.

CULCHETH RETURNS CASINO 50th Anniversary Special
And mine. In my top ten that is, a struggle to dance to for me, my legs are long and harder to get them up to speed whereas yours my friend are the right length.😀

CULCHETH RETURNS CASINO 50th Anniversary Special
File this one from Vernon Greene under Wigan Casino near misses. Kev Roberts once told me he found a copy of this in the states, he didn't know it at the time and he couldn't wait to play it to the Wigan Casino faithful at the weekend. All the excitement on the way back to the UK was unbearable, he'd just discovered the next big thing, he played it and it cleared the dancefloor, tumbleweed the lot. What a bugger. Similar story with Russ and Sammy Lee "What goes around" now residing in Baz's box.
