Happy Playing Mp3's And Cd's Nottingham

Exactly. just some more chancers running just another scam. The reason they're not concerned about format isn't some noble crusade to 'get the music to the people', or some anti-materialist stance. Been hearing that same shit for years, all off people who simply want to make money off boots or be trendy djs but don't want to commit any expenditure or effort. Simple as that. There's about 1,000 dos on every weekend in the uk, and that's the ones playing proper records. It's almost too easy nowadays to buy a collection of classic originals - as proved by the fact so many have done it - so really, how easy do these want it. There simply is not any scenario left in the world that requires more DJs, let alone ones with zero record collecting experience and therefore zero knowledge. At best, they will offer a similarly predictable and stagnant output to the wedding dj type -

that's like saying i'd rather eat cat shit than dog shit cos it's less smelly; best to eat neither isn't it? Why offer any argument for anything that isn't first-rate music off original vinyl. There's a lot of people doing just that, anything less is...well, less. -
I think its safe to say that our concept of rarity is quite a fragile one. 1000 additional collectors worldwide and a 45 that exists in the 100s becomes rare, 1000 less collectors and it becomes common. A 45 has a surge or drop in popularity, its availability responds accordingly. Tracks that might have seemed common because they seemed to be in every sales list and in every sales box, might just have been unwanted, and in fact every bit as rare, or rarer, than an established popular track thats considered a rarity. although prices still seem to spiral upwards, you have to predict a time when a whole load of a 45 such as the ronnie forte come to the market around the same time, if there are 100s sat in collections. They're not sat in the collections of youngsters after all. A price bubble could be forming in other words, due to a temporary cultural trend.
-
Otis lee too aparrently. Where are they though; are there really 600 sat in collections? Guess that there easily could be. On the other hand, 500-1000 copies of a record, in the context of 6 billion people in the world, is still a pretty rare record
-
If its true about 600 stock copies coming over of this and others...where the hell do they go?! Is it exaggeration, 600 is a lot of copies!

The one with flutes is the one imo, you can hear them faintly in the mix on the other -
Soulgirl85 had a tabby thomas at very reasonable price up on facebook yesterday

if you're flogging it, it might be nice to give some credit to Manu Dibangu, who made the track. no?

Rita & The Tiaras Original On E-Bay $3,850 And Still 5 Days To Go,

Agree with that, it's a complete beast, rare or not. I'd 100% play it and dance to it if it was a £50 record. think I tried to buy yours Quinvy...in some distant past when I had money -
Anyone got a lucille brown - lonely inside on Hull for me please? cheers recordmik@btinternet.com

I do get it Pete, the pure northern soul model is a great thing...but things end or change I guess. I was gutted when that whole retro/funk fad ended around 2000, as I was running a big club and loved funk and almost overnight it died a death in the mainstream conciousness and we were uncool. Good, cos around the same time the r&b was starting to heat up and within 2 years I was playing that at mod dos. if what I'm doing now ever runs its course, I might do northern more in depth...always fancied being a 70s & modern dj...might start that 90s house revival...or hip hop...keep meaning to get back into graffiti!...come on man, as shit as life is, its full of great stuff
-
Well you're really well catered for Pete! Everybody should be happy. if you're only into one narrow style, and that style's been hammered for 40 years, then yes maybe you have heard the best of it. Strikes me as a strange complaint though, as by this time you've had 40 years of fun out of just that one style, and plenty more if you just want to stay in that groove - in fact, theres a huge scene dedicated to just that! to those of us who like music generally though, it feels like the opposite situation: I hear new music at a rate that is overwhelming and my main worry is that I'll never get it all, get to dance to it all in a club, or even hear it all in my lifetime. Not trying to plug my club, but at it we have definite parameters that range from 50s r&b at one end to early 70s soul & funk at the other. The vast majority of soul records wouldnt suit our sound yet still there are 1000s of records we could play there, 1000s that we havent got yet or havent played. if we do run out of new things that fit within those parameters to play in our lifetimes, then good - might then get around to hearing all the soul, ska, reggae, house, hip hop, modern, disco etc that I havent heard yet! point I'm making is : there's an almost infinite amount of great soulful music out there, enough to keep you busy for years to come - if you've chosen to focus on one particular style only, then thats a limitation of you, not of music and not of the scene. it seems to be wantonly negative to only focus on what there isnt (great 60s northern newies) instead of on what there is

Speak for yourself! Some places I've djed over the years are undoubtedly cool as f@%k and I'm pretty sure some of the places I'll go to in the future will be too - pretty much any soul club in continental Europe, for example. may not be the NORTHERN soul scene as you recognise it, but its probably time that some people accepted that that particular angle isnt and never has been where soul music starts and ends. in fact, I think the worldwide soul scene would be a fair bit better off without people with parameters of taste set 30+ years ago imposing 30+ year old parameters on it. as for the term 'up front' ; I'd not use it on a flyer or anything but I think it does have meaning. I take it to mean any dj or night that follows the evolution of the vintage music scene - whether thats with new releases, new discoveries, or just currently popular records or styles; and that being opposed to djs or nights where nostalgia is the primary principle. I think that its a wrong approach if used to force feed unknown after unknown track on people; I dont think people want that and I know I dont as a dancer; its more of an outlook where you take into account trends of the scene and wider culture - an outlook true to the spirit of the original scene imo. I think you could do an 'upfront' set of 70s oldies, by playing ones that have a currently hip sound or reviving neglected ones for example. That may be a contradiction in terms but I expect that you all know what I mean nevertheless. its about being part of the evolution of the scene - breaking newies, trying new things, not getting stuck in a musical rut. There are djs and clubs doing exactly this, I guess that they are 'upfront', relatively at least, and some of them are pretty cool. lastly, I should point out the paradox that is someone who doesnt appreciate any deviation from a traditional northern sound describing the scene as uncool ; as that attitude is exactly the part of it which IS uncool. Cool is evolving and keeping a broad mind and open ears.
-
I just loved it for about 2 years, not sure nowadays what style you'd call it but it was known as 'jump up' then - very antisocial gangster sounding stuff, love it. Still got a pile of 12s, hard to imagine music ever getting that badass again. sorry for off topic
-
northern soul doesnt really mean owt though, except that which is played at northern soul venues! Had this same thing about early r&b or later soul being played on the mod scene and people coming up with weird theories about why it wasn't mod, none of which made any sense. if it got played by mod djs and went down well at a mod do, then it's mod music. I guess northern soul is pretty much like that isnt it? things change, you cant rage at it too much. If you think the up front soul scene is too different from the traditional northern soul scene to use the term, then I wouldnt worry about it ; I dont think anyone cares about the term any more, except the nostalgia folks, and bootleg sellers. Maybe by the same standard, i couldnt call my night a mod night....oh well...
-
yes but I have A past Pete, covering everything from jazz to jungle; and that past had its soundtrack, its anthems and its good times. but I'm not stuck in it, or fixated on the music that went with it. As great as anything ever is I'm just hungry for something new.
-
That's bang on. From an outsider's (to the traditional northern scene) point of view, its the variety of styles and tempos of soul that has evolved over the last 20 years or so that makes the scene appealing. I dont think that I'm the only one who feels like that. for us who dont have a northern soul past, but love music and dancing - this is approaching the soul scene we dreamed of. theres a whole massive and profitable scene dedicated to those who only want to hear that typical northern soul sound ; seems strangely mean spirited therefore to constantly criticise those who try to operate with a more broad minded outlook. comparing every track you hear to the best tracks ever made is a sign of stagnating musical taste and leads to that fate which tends to befall many, particularly old, people - only ever listening to a pool of a few hundred 'classics'. You should be careful about that. If every track has to be a epic mind blowing anthem, then youre not understanding music...certainly not music in a underground nightclub context. That's the sort of attitude average folks take into a cheesy 80s bar or wherever they go. I'm not particularly in love with these records mentioned - theyre simply not my prefered type of sound, but I can hear the quality in them. But regardless, if people didnt find them and play them out, no one would ever hear them, is that really what you want? Would you want a stax b side to have never been heard? Its not about harping on about the same tunes infinitely - leave that to mainstream radio listeners - or dwelling on one specific style - its about hearing everything...as much as possible - and picking out moments you love. Sometimes its an anthem you'll take to your grave, sometimes its the novelty of something you havent heard before, sometimes its just a good tune, sometimes a not so good tune...its all part of a vibrant scene. the alternative is classics nights...and excuse me but fuck that
-
I've heard that, but what a load of bollocks with no apparent reason or precedent behind it. Maybe they're basing it on car insurance - where more value might make the insured item more prone to theft, but how does this apply to parcels, where you cant see the contents and the only potential thieves are the insurers own staff? maybe they think that if it gets mis-delivered, or left with a dodgy relative, it'll be less likely to be returned if it's of value, increasing their exposure to payouts. seems dodgy though, pretty sure that if insure my house contents for 20 grand but actually have 30 grands worth of stuff, it doesn't invalidate my insurance

I might like the pink label version (1011?) if I'd not heard the 1006 version, but once you've heard that you cant go back. The mouth organ is irritating and conflict with the vocals and the drums are low in the mix on 1011; the clean simple production and those in your face drums on 1006 just give the track the ooomph it needs. It'd be a big track if there wasnt the 1011 version to get it confused with imo

I guess that this qualifies as soul : I have a copy of Massive Attack 'Blue Lines' credited to just 'Massive' because it was released during the first gulf war and the band name was considered offensive. I know it doesn't make any sense but that's what I heard. Another moment to be proud of in human history!

don't know that, but I know that only one's got 'why, Why...' on the other side! -
The original is not a rare record, it makes sense that a 70s re-issue would be rarer, why would it have sold well in the 70s?

Wayne Carter - Peter In Or Out - Mootrey's
pow wow mik replied to Reg Scott's topic in Look At Your Box
I assume as many of this were found in the 90s (100s) as his other on mootreys, so should be as many copies out there but you dont seem to see it much, I guess cos there's none of either in the wild and high value hasnt prized this out of collections yet.. This was never as popular and hasn't yet been revived like the other. I'd want 150 ish
