How you got into northern soul
There was a similar thread in 2012 under the heading of Which Record Got You Hooked. Below is my contribution to that thread as to how it happened for me: "I can remember it well. My sister is almost 3yrs older than me and was into Soul from around 1969 and she had a small collection of records which I now suspect were mainly boots (but she didn't know). In 1970 I was 11yrs old and remember that whenever my sister played her records I would moan to my mum that our kid was playing her crap again (me thinking the likes of Fire by Arthur Brown was the bees knees!!!) The following summer in 1971 I was approaching 13yrs of age and 'kick can football' in the playground was loosing its appeal and was giving way to me and my mates noticing that girls were not just sisters or general nuisances but actually had much more about them!!!! The sap was clearly starting to rise. At around 7pm one summer's evening I was board and wondered into our dining room where we had a steriogramme. Our kid's record box was there so I pulled out a record with a bright yellow lable with the logo V.I.P. (boot I think) and played Needle In A Haystack by The Velvelettes. I was awestruck and to this day I can conjur the feeling I had of absolute elation and pure joy. No more hanging around on the park with my old gang and it was off to the local youth club for me. " Regards. Drew.

Rarest of the rare allnighter 1994
Just out of interest but at about 2.28 into the clip, a guy walks in front of the decks and he's wearing a back vest and I suspect flared 'baggy' trousers. Whilst such garb is not my own 'cup of tea' at all, it seems that some folks have always, since the 70's, dressed like this at soul events even when the scene was 'underground' and far more selective as to who was supposed to join in! Just sayin' like. Regards. Drew.

Motown the musical - anyone?
Indeed Dreamgirls was amazing Ed. Tears in the eyes, hairs on neck stood up and as you say, breath taking! Three standing ovations during the show we were at! Regards. Drew.

What is 'Proper' dancing?
Utter tripe Zed1. There are folks who have been stalwart punters on the scene since its inception who, in the dancing sense, haven't got, did'nt have, a rhythmic or stylised bone in their body. However, when they hit the floor, they are, were, living and enjoying the music, no less than the folks who can dance 'Northern'. We all know what you mean by 'the basic 2 step' dance that is associated with Northern. When it's done well it looks great. If it isn't, so what. For crying out loud, most of us are in our 50s or 60s and just glad to still be movin' at all. Jeeze, debating who can and who can't dance belongs to the school common room of my youth! For goodness sake, is how people dance what you think is a significant issue for 'the scene' today! Regards. Drew.

Advice on which soul do required please
We are in London later this month and I am looking to attend a soul night on Friday 25th Nov. There appears to be two soul nights not too far from the West End where we will be staying. They are TSWI at The Pack and Coaches near Euston and Dugout at Mascara Bar, Stamford Hill. Please could those not connected to either event but who have knowledge of one or both of these nights give me a PM as to your views/comments re music policy, attendance, venue etc. This would be much appreciated. Please do not post a reply here in the thread as I have no wish to offend anyone connected to either event. I am simply trying to get our non theatre evening out in London rounded off with some great soul music and dancing. We have been to some cracking nights on such weekends away in London in the past (Va va Voom for instance) and some where it's not been great for one reason or another (three people other than us or a dive of a venue) so I am simply trying to make a choice that works for my partner as much as me. Any pointers will be much appreciated and once again this question/request is not intended to offend anyone. Thanks in advance. Regards. Drew.

In London to see Dream Girls in Nov. Think we'll hear much more soulful singing than if we'd picked the Motown show. Regards. Drew.

Debra Johnson To get love you got to bring love
So, is this a 60s or 70s recording that was unreleased before the Kent stuff as it had 'sat in the vaults' as it were? Regards. Drew.

Debra Johnson To get love you got to bring love
What is the history of this record please? Someone has just done me a disc with this on; new to me and I love it. The info on its YouTube page is not clear with comments suggesting that it is not that old. Regards. Drew.
