  1. I thought this might be hard work. Should really be getting on with my work but I'm bored!!!!! KTF. Drew.
  2. I've been watching episodes of the Sopranos on DVD recently and got to thinking about Ian Levine saying in one of his threads that Simon Soussan had been on the run from the mob. It got me wondering; has anyone any experience/stories of gangsters trying to 'muscle-in' on any soul nights, clubs or any activities connected to 'the scene' at any time? From films, TV and books there are lots of stories about this being a problem over the years for 'general' night club owners, buissness owners etc, but has it ever been a problem for the NS/soul scene? KTF. Drew.

Jackie Wilson, Levi Stubbs, Sam Cooke, Chuck Jackson, Roy Hamilton all wonderful voices and singers. Who's best.........................................it's a bit like saying diamonds are better than gold!! Jackie is up there with all the other diamonds who, in my humble opinion, are just as golden as each other!!!! That's how I see it. I'll get me sickbag!!! KTF. Drew.
  4. I am confused also. The thread was in All About Soul and I've always understood that to be for posts/discussions about soul music and the soul scene. Like or dislike the man or his music, surely if anybody has anything to say about soul and the soul scene over the years worth listening to it is Ian Levine. This thread fitted that bill in my opinion. Aren't threads supposed to 'branch out' with one topic leading to another, that's what discussions do! I have been reading this thread on and off over the last few days and enjoyed lots of the information and stories that Ian has to share. I'm not a big fan of a lot of his stuff but I respect his passion for what he does and his significant contribution to the scene over the years, (I have never met the man by the way). A few posts back someone countered the negative posts against Ian Levine by saying that they were simply trying to get the thread closed or have some negative impact on it. It seems that they have had their way!!!!! No one is forced to read it or contribute for foooks sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KTF. Drew.
  5. No. It would add to an already oversaturated market and would soon loose appeal and numbers. KTF Drew.

Just listening to this on iplayer whist at work. Disappointing that some classics don't make the Top 30 but it's on sales I understand. Just goes to show that many of the Motown tunes loved on the Northern Soul/Soul scene were not best sellers, which is pretty much in line with everything else we love!!!!!! KTF. Drew.

Some belters on there Mike. Shows how talented and creative the folks on this scene are. Liked the early Taste of Honey ones from Chris Morgan with George Best and Dennis Law on. Always like any that have label scans on. But this has to be my fave. I could look (perv) at this gorgeous woman (SF) all foookin' day. KTF. Drew.
  8. A big thanks to all the folks on here, creators, mods and members who make this site what it is..........................................excellent!!!!!!!! Have a great night one and all with best wishes for the coming New Year, from: Drew, The Gary Glitter Fan and all in the Drew household. KTF. Drew.

I only know of Eartha Kitt from Saturday night light entertainment programes from the 60s and 70s and wouldn't necessarily have associated her with the soul scene. However, IMHO you are wrong to say that this artiste should not get a mention on here. The posted tunes above show that this lady had more in her locker than I thought she had. Get a grip Joker; there are plenty of hits on this scene with far less soul!!!!!!! All the best to you and yours. KTF. Drew.
  10. I always thought the version with singing as a sort of chorus had the lyrics "my room is only is only 6x6", not cell! I always took it to be some sort of comment on ghetto living conditions but I'm probably miles off the mark. KTF. Drew.
  11. I will try harder, honestly Miss! I actually don't know what SSLAAS stands for.........SoulSourceLadies something or other I guess which shows I should read every thread on here from start to finish!!! KTF. Drew.
  12. Thanks Reg. I must make a point of reading more sections/threads. KTF. Drew.
  13. Now this could be a mistaken double booking, misprint or whatever, but according to the Events List on here for this coming weekend (Sat 20th Dec 08), Soul Sam is booked at The Greatstone bash in Manchester and at a do called The Get Involved Xmas Party in London!!!!! Can't be two soul DJs using that name surely and neither do is a nighter. So Sam has either: - wings or; - his own plane/hellicopter; - become a god and can be in two places at the same time!!!! I realise that DJ's such as Sam often cover two or even three events in an evening but usually in the same geographical area surely. The Greatstone is 8pm to 2am and the London do is 8pm to 3am so I suppose over 7hrs it is possible to travel that distance if you were on at the very begining of one do and on at the end of the other but this would take some effort and would not make either spot an enjoyable experience I suspect. I've double checked the events postings and the dates are the same. So where is Sam playing this coming Sat? KTF. Drew.
  14. Simsy, I'm a bit confused (not hard for me ). Was the clip (whole play) on TV recently for you to watch it on iplayer. KTF. Drew.

My apologies for this being slightly off thread but can someone tell me what these present 'big ticket' numbers are? Should make an interesting list and I suspect the list might differ depending on region. Also, I need to know for when I win the lottery this weekend!!!!
  17. New to me and heard it from a 4th Anniversary CD from Oldham's Polish Club. Superb tune. I have searched Refosoul and can't find a clip and don't know how to upload it from the CD. Anyone able to post it up? KTF. Drew.
  18. I love reading about this stuff. A while ago I started a thread entiled Will The Real Simon Sousan Stand Up as all I remember from being a teenager was this name that was around and how this guy was somesort of villain with almost mythical status even then. Some of the stories from Ian Dewhurst were excellent and whilst not everyone who posted on the thread remembered SS in any fond way at all, it is all part of the scene's history etc. I'm sure you have loads of stories to tell from your time on the scene/in the buisness. You should write a book Ian but in the meantime give us a few snippets!! KTF. Drew.

I too have always struggled with this Beeks whenever the topic comes up. Boots are a no-goer for the obvious reason that they are snide, but a legitimate release I don't see the problem. If two DJs at a night have the same record that they intend to play, one with a white demo (or whatever other form of origional) and the other with a later issue......talk to oneanother for Christs sake and decide who is playing the said tune. If for some reason this is not possible and the DJ with the white demo (origional) comes on following the playing of the issue..........it's not the end of the sodding world.............................. play something else!!!!!! KTF. Drew.
  20. I lent my SITSOM DVD to someone a year or two back. Can't bloody remember who I lent it to and it's never been returned. Is it still obtainable? KTF. Drew.

That bleedin' Third Window From The Right is getting me down. Is that one that could go under the Wombourne hammer? Yes Wombourne is a lovely place Pete. Been there a couple of times for meetings in the past. I remember the first time I drove through. There is a nice 'village green' type area that you drive round on a one way system I seem to remember. I had a mate with me who had come for the ride. It was a really pleasant sunny day and as we were driving through the village centre I said to my mate "don't places like this just make you feel all calm and relaxed" at which point a bloke at a junction cut me up and the next second I'm hanging out of the window swearing my head off and calling him all the tw*ts under the sun!!!!! When I'd stopped there was lots of old dears staring at me and I felt a right tw*t meself!! Sorry for going off thread. KTF. Drew.

For some reason my computer at work has now decided to let me post but will no longer let me play Refosoul!!!!! Tried today to tell work colleagues of why Levi Stubbs' death is such a loss to so many who love soul music, only to be met with blank looks and lots of bland "Oh well" type of statements. I wanted to play the acappella version off here of Just Ask The Lonely to the Philistines but it won't play!!! One colleague did say that they would love to hear it but they are not on the net at home. Please can someone think of a way I can play it tomorrow, keeping in mind that the council block things like You Tube etc. Is there a way it can be sent in an e-mail or something by me from home, with a link that will allow Windows Media to play it? Clutching at straws I know but any suggestions would be most gratefully received. KTF. Drew.
