  1. I saw that Bobby Bland "Shoes" go for a bit recently. I thought that was a sandal!! Jo Ann Hendeson 1954??!! Is that a misprint. Never heard it. ROD
  2. I go on Ebay quite a lot and I can't say that over past 4 years prices have particularly come down for 60's Northern. In fact Mint condition 45s appear to attract a premium price and that G condition only Salvadores went for £609!! However I think it is a case of just looking around and you can get 45s at prices that don't break the bank. This forum has a lot of 45s at fair prices. I got Quintessents other night on Ebay for £126. OK it was only "VG clean" but I've bought off guy before and label looked fine from picture. I thought I'd have to pay a lot more than that to get a copy. I guess that's due to it's lack of exposure. ROD
  3. Is that a maple leaf on label. Canadian issue to cash in..... ROD
  4. I hate to say this as Im obviously in a minority but does anyone notice a resemblance to Gerry and the Pacemakers on say "Don't let the sun catch you crying" Are they a white group? ROD
  5. Hello John, I had so much time on my hands when I was a full-time dealer but now I can see that I shoulda got myself a micrometer instead of wasting my time going fishing 3 days a week!! I just had a look at mine. No Pb, no dimples and found it in St. Louis. In thec absence of specialist tools I just looked at it in relation to a couple of 45s on Chess and USA which I assume are Chicago pressings and vinyl does appear thicker and more rigid. As far as I remember this copy is the same as 3 others I had and sold at Ritz in Manchester back in the 70's which came off a guy called Dave Berry in St. Louis who was a mate of Mark Edmund. At the time I think he said he got them offa guy who was something to do with the 45 but Im gonna email him to see if he can remember. So there may be more than one original St.Louis knocking about. Or maybe I've just not seen the dimples. Are they immediately evident on close inspection. ROD
  6. The DJ copy of Precisions went for £75 on Ebay in last couple of weeks ROD

Kev, I'd forgotten guy's name on AFN although I thought it was on around 10pm but my memory is very selective. I do remember listening to him playing Stylistics "You're a big girl now" on Sebring [was it?] and thinking I must get that. Pete, many's the morning I set off for school at 8.30 and was in the local Stockport record shop at 9.30. Guy there used to write me a sick note for the teacher. Eventually my mum caught me and a mate [Richard Hillel if anyone knows him] in there wagging it and she dobbed us in to the school. Got 6 strokes of the cane and some lecture about letting down the school by being the first kids to play truant in the sixth form. But what an education we got in that shop. "Here she comes" on UK Parkway DJ for £1 [most of a week's dinner money]off "Little Louie". Didn't even know what it was but he said it was good. Very happy days!!!! ROD

Well me too but I must be older. My memories would be Keith West, Lemon Pipers, Simon Dupree's "Kites""Happy Jack", "Pictures of Matchstick Men". Don't know what our age gap is but those are some of the pop songs that stick with me and I think illustrates the difficulty of having a radio station aimed at the over 35s. Those few years between us make a big difference. The 70's pop IMO was absolute bobbins compared to the 60's. I really couldn't listen to a station playing any of those songs you listed. The only guy I'd go out of my way to listen to on the radio would be Mark Lamarr. ROD

Pete, Im sorry but 70's pop/rock leaves me unmoved. I like 60's reggae altho more into the lovers-rock type sound of 70's and 80's, rockabilly, doo-wop and 50's jump R&B, and 60's US garage. I don't count them as nothing!! ROD

Im a bit perplexed. If the station is aimed at the over 35s then what do I,born in 1952,and somebody else born in 1971 have musically in common. Im 16 when Beatles and Stones are in the charts, and they're listening to Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue at the same age. So a bit of a wide divergence there and Im wondering where the common ground is supposed to be. The whole concept sounds rather similar to the rebranded Smooth FM which plays disco and soul hits mainly from 70's and 80's with the odd 60's track [usually Motown] thrown in and is aimed at the same age group I'd guess from nature of the featured advertising. Did I see that there's a nightly Northern show starting at 8pm. I'd rather watch the TV or video although I suppose I could have it on over the net when Im on here but that's usually an opportunity to listen to a CD. Back in '69 I'd listen to Mike Raven or tune into American Forces Network from Germany. Never listened to UK radio cos I'd gotten into soul. Why would I want to start listening now to a station playing the Carpenters!! I remember Todd Rundgren, Mott the Hoople, Colin Blunstone. They were records you flicked past to find the good stuff. ROD
  11. Martyn, Im sure Paul has only one dad and not several with one jacket between them. Paul, you just ignore these nasty old men. I understood perfectly what you meant. I still have my 40" bags but unfortunately they're now under my eyes!! ROD
  12. Steve, did find 2or 3 I think in Wax Museum,Charlotte with Alex Jones. Think Al kept a copy. Don't think it was our discovery. Im pretty sure we'd heard about 45. We did bring them back over here but no idea who got them and no idea of existence of WDJs. I know we def have had the faulty Newalkers 45 and I'd agree that all Jean Carters I've ever had or heard are distorted. Im not particularly musical so I put it down to being too much bass in the mix but again no idea of real technical reason. Although I think it was Tony who shot Phil down I would agree with Phil that just because some dealer wants to unload a 45 what he tells you might not be the gospel truth. "Here, mate wanna buy this Del-Larks for £3,000. Yes it's cracked right through but it was given away free in two halves by the Washington Angling Times in 1966 and they're all like that" No one's mentioned Salvadores. When that starts it kinda "drops" or slows down or something that is noticeable. So there you are Steve. You have the benefit of my vast experience and knowledge as a collector and dealer for past 35 years. Rubbish really!! ROD
  13. Fave break is in Fidels "Im giving you notice". Music stops and girl's voice saying:- "Are you gonna believe what I tell ya or you gonna believe what you see" Fits in perfectly and IMO sums up women wonderfully. I have this 45 by Bobby Sanders "The way I feel" . Nice tempo, nice back-up vocals but no break. Just don't sound right really. ROD
  14. Dave, well that's rich coming from a tax exile such as yourself as you sit around the pool sipping your chilled pale ale. If you'd cared to stay in touch with your roots you would have known that avocado and magenta are this season's racing colours for whippets and pigeons respectively. I am horrified that you should dispute my Northern credentials, which are as large if not quite as firm as they once were. I was born a stone's throw from a dark satanic mill which has now been converted into tasteful bijou apartments incorporating a fine bistro but I will never forget when we could only afford to have an 80" plasma TV in one room. I suggest you take your egg-shell white demos and shove..... Cordially yours ROD
  15. Simon, don't get me started!! "Girls" roped in the poor Whatnauts. From "I'll erase away your pain" to that abomination. Bon nuit ROD
  16. Anyone remember this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They never stopped playing it around here. The Pits!! You wanna hear the Moments at their best then "Not on the outside" or "Love on a two-way street" ROD
  17. Steve, Im glad you've entered into the spirit of the thread with what is a very important question. I think that unless an experienced practioner of the ancient Oriental art of calligraphy it were best to leave the cardboard covers in their original pristine whiteness. Stay away from covers of a different hue, such as the pink ones that my wife brought me back from the Beatin 'Rhythm emporium in Manchester, as they tend to attract innuendo and outright ridicule. An inner sleeve is a "de rigeur" and I suggest "red" for Detroit 45s and "green" for Northern but feel free to choose your own colour scheme should you wish to do it wrong. I've not decided as yet on the Motown but I think something to match the curtains. Avocado and magenta should be avoided at all costs as you don't want to end up looking like Rumpole of the Bailey after repeated long lunches paid for by clients whose names are preceeded by words like "Mad" or "Butcher". ROD
  18. And that Ted is because Pep is a Northener, and not many people know that as Mr.Caine from Huddersfield is credited with saying. I find myself doing it now looking through sales boxes. I mean you don't look through boxes stood on your head or lying horizontal on your side. I then send the miscreant home to tidy his bedroom and put his CDs back in the correct cases. Bring back National Service. Flogging is too good for them but quite pleasurable between consenting adults. ROD
  19. Paul,I'd ignore that last post by Baz. An untidy box is a small step from satanism in my book. You always put the 45 back inthe same place it came out of with the A-side outward and aligned so you can read the artist and title. Baz is obviously trying to drive you to distraction whereby you end up leaving the scene and selling your records at a knock-down price to Mrs. Baz, who will claim to be no relation. He has a history of doing this. He told my mate there was no B in the alphabet and got Jimmy Burns original off him for 3s/6d. ROD
  20. The wife went to see the play with her ex-husband and it brought back so many memories for them both, they're thinking of getting back together. I can't thank you enough!! ROD PS They both loved it. Rest was wishful thinking.
  21. Alphabetically by surname for SINGLE artists, shirley. And by first letter of group name but divide into Motown,Detroit, Modern[very very small box]and Northern. Dave and Steve M hit on a novel and interesting idea there but as you can see it took a Northener to refine it to perfection The only drawback is that I can never own 45s by such as Rubin or Tate due to lack of surname and Little Ritchie causes many a sleepless night. And that goes for Paris too. Do the words "retentive" and "anal" strike a chord. What order would you put those in. I can talk. I have spider[3-prong] middles in all my USA stuff and they're all the same way round [like a Y] and I wanna know who's been messing with my 45s when they're not. So, I have to agree that the alphabet is the fella for you but don't drink cos if you're anything like me after 5 or 6 I can't even remember the betalpha although my new found best mates tend to make up for it. ROD Ps Forget Mr. Roberts. This is the stuff of Northern collecting!!!
  22. Spanner I PM'd you. For anybody reading this thread, the lucky winner of the first auction of Barbara Lewis was Spanner1012. No relation to Spanner0. Must be a fad. Think I'll change my moniker to "Black and Decker Cordless Drill" ROD
  23. I just used the link earlier in the thread to check on the auction where I won Barbara Lewis this time. Im down as a possible shillbidder when in fact I was trying to win the 45 after some dodgy goings on with previous auction [see Ebay Jokers]. So Matt how do I download this tool and I think a bit of work required yet if data is to be analysed correctly. ROD
  24. I once saw Jackie Wilson "I get the sweetest feeling" on regular US brunswick reach $100 with two people bidding against each other. Is this not just the same. It gets personal sometimes. ROD
  25. https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...AMEBI%3AIT&rd=1 I won it this time around. No overbid. So somewhat inconclusive but I think there was something fishy about the whole thing. The Mad Lads got no bids. ROD
