  1. I don't know why you included "smilie" cos you're spot on, aren't you. From a quick google it appears to have started September '75. I think up until then there wasn't an "oldies" thing. Sure there were local clubs where they may have played EMIs of current biggies or latest bootlegs but not really oldies as we have now. And of course there were always locals who had current nighter 45s as well. Not just the Wigan and Mecca jocks. ROD
  2. I take your point but I'd say that the Holy Grail tends to differ for each collector in that maybe it's the items you've never had or got that you consider the rarest and most desirable. I mean anyone would be chuffed to get DB on London DJ but it wouldn't really merit a thread on SS. However I will meet you halfway and say that turning up a London issue would be the HG. Doesn't exist as far as I know. ROD
  3. Deadwax details. ARCHER stamp both sides "Darling.." 1010 "squiggle" 95 "Yes..." 1009XX "squiggle" 95 Cheers ROD
  4. Well the sawing a woman in half went horribly wrong but it was the wife so it wasn't the end of the world. Well, for her, it was. Here's a link to Dave Flynn's listing https://capitolsoulclub.homestead.com/Detro...lsMARYJANE.html Obviously in regard to 1003,1009 and 1010 that throws up some talking points for those of us who don't have to go out shopping immediately. ROD
  5. "Yes I can" on mine too. Probably error in John's listing?
  6. £100 at VG+ on latest "Ravin'Mad" list. Only £900 less than book price!! ROD
  7. Collection hardly ever. Soul radio never unless happen to be in the car. Internet radio never. Clips I don't know on here or Ebay most days. CDs only in the car sometimes. As unemployed buying is out the window and I guess I only played my 45s when I got something new to me. A static collection is very boring. ROD
  8. I didn't pay any attention to Manny's blurb, other than following thread on here, as I wasn't bidding. Im confused now. It's not Kenny's? It was Tim's? ROD

I was on my own!! Followed that by "Dark Angel-the Ascent", a "horror" film supposedly set in US but it was obviously Romania [borne out by the credits at the end]. What can I say, I like trash films, and a docu on Bobby Bland is too much like doing homework. ROD

I watched "Meet the Spartans". Bobby woulda been funnier!! ROD
  11. I kinda agree with that with one or two provisos. The figures bandied about before end of the auction were getting ridiculous as Godz pointed out elsewhere. I doubt there's that many buyers who can afford to shell out the 15K originally paid never mind 25K. I've no idea who bid on this site but you only have to look at the sales threads on here to see that a lot are selling 45s outta "collections" just to finance next purchase. Im talking a couple of hundred quids worth in some cases. No way many could raise 25K doing that. John's site is the foremost auction outlet for soul 45s. I wonder if Kenny coulda reached that sum without John's name and customer base. There's a hell of a lot of work gone into Manny's site and even though I consider him the spawn of Satan for the guide books and view his prices as somewhat ambitious I still take my hat off to him for what he has accomplished because any of us coulda done the same if we'd had his vision, drive and determination. ROD
  12. I think extremely roughly. Sold at 25k less 20% is 20K making 5K above original price of 15K ROD
  13. Wow, a bigger curmudgeon than myself!! I never noticed that Tony but you're right. I think some kinda thought has gone into it, in that they've used the old Tamla design as some kinda tie-in with origins of the label but obviously nothing we'd recognise as rational, marketable or desirable. I did notice that although "Four Tops" on US copies it is "The Four Tops" on a Dutch "Baby I need your loving" copy I have. As I only collect US Motown I checked Ebay for UK issues and no "The" there either. ROD

    Think you're recalling Jackie Wilson's "Whispers" there,Ted
  15. IMO a completely wasted opportunity. I guess they may sell to casual Motown buyer but I really doubt such buyers exist anymore. Certainly missed collector's market by a mile. ROD
  16. While we are on The Delfonics, has any one ever come across a version of The Delfonics doing "Gimme some lovin" ? Deltones on UK Columbia from 1970. Youth club record at the time. ROD
  17. See link https://cgi.ebay.com/SOUNDTRACK-LP-THE-SOUL...Q2em118Q2el1247 ROD
  18. Wrong! Sold CODs to Tim. Combinations to Carl. ROD
  19. Yes Carl has the Combinations not the CODs. Well, not my CODs anyway. ROD
  20. I wouldn't have said so Steve. It looked "finished" to me and same as Combinations rarity on same label. No idea on where it came from other than from John A originally to Richard to me. I'd guess either from the guys at Mar-v-lus. The warehouse [studio inside?] was still open in '79 when I went and full of 45s [39 copies of Inspirations - those were the days!!] or that he got them from Lucky Cordell as I think John told me once they came out of a famous DJ's collection and Lucky did sell now and again. ROD
  21. I like it but can he sing? George Lemons move over! ROD
  22. "Determination" just as popular as "...misunderstanding" in late 60's. I think the questioner is maybe getting too wrapped up in the minutea of it all. As Pete says all are first pressings. In fact don't think I've seen this release on later design. If it is probably much scarcer than first run. No concrete explanation why issues pictured differ slightly other than as Pete says maybe different pressing plants, or East/West coast or slighty later runs which are the usual reasons. As a rough guide some of the early Tamla and Gordy seem to have been put out again a lot later but designs are different so easy to tell. As for which copy to keep I'd go for best condition copy. ROD
  23. Laura Lee was £100 on Marc Forrest list. Not sold yet. OTT I'd say. Sold a minter of Skip for £200 the other day and I think Marc got £250. ROD
