Manship Auction
Yep, thats the one and Dearlove is selling it for a ton . I got mine as it was the only one around for a price I was comfortable paying as I usually don't go for demo's or UK releases. I did a search on John Manships site and he has the US release 1971 and the UK as a 1976 release and they have a different flips. Glad to know that the other side of the UK release is quite nondescript, but I am interested in the other side of the US release "I Remember Mama". The title doesn't really inspire me, but I could be wrong, look at Len Jewell the Elevator Song. John

Happy Once Again, Decent Ebay Wins At Last
Marc, It was me who got the issue from you on ebay, last month or so. About £25, a bargain IMO. John

Fantastic B Sides Again
What about Johnny Robinson - When A Man Cries - Okeh, the other side to Poor Man. IMO A complete monster.....

Fantastic B Sides Again
Great record, I've never rated Mean Man

Happy Once Again, Decent Ebay Wins At Last
Damn I missed Zilla, the last one I saw was a VG copy for around £70, which I thought was too much. Sly, Slick seems to have come up a few times recently and even the issue with "I'm Ready For You" has come down in price.

Prices - What The Hell Is Going On?
I've spoken to a few dealers recently, who have said that apart from really rare/in-demand records, other records are not shifting as a lot of people already have them in their collections One thing that has surprised me after reading the thread on Luther Ingram - HIB, is how many releases this had? demo's/Issues/Vinyl/Styreen/east coast/west coast. How many were pressed? I know this is slightly off topic, but Paul Mooney and Pete Smith both commented on an amount of 3,000 demo's pressed for radio stations in the 60's. Again how rare is rare? Steve Plumb has had Jeater - Wherever You Are on his site for quite a while and it's slowly gone down in price over the months (£30 surely some one wants it for that price?), this is a rare record. I don't know what quanty Steve has this in, but I wouldn't have thought much (I could be wrong). This was deemed rare enough/In-demand to warrant inclusion in one of John Manships Auctions (don't know where it finished though), but nobody wants it. Maybe we are in a situation, where there are actually more "rare" records in circulation than people who want them? This is in line with the general supply/demand theory, the price drops to a level that will attract buyers. How many collector are there globally? Looking at the subscribers on SS (4,064), EMS (600), Soul Talk (369). That totals 5,033 users (that includes multiple users). Add around another say 5,000 for non UK centric buyers and people who don't want to be on these forums, which potentially brings the record buying public to about 10,000 people globally (my guess). After speaking to John Anderson about Innervision a few months ago, he told me that he got 1,000 as a new release (all sold), which got me thinking, if he was the only distributor (possibly not), and there are about 10,000 collectors globally, that means that 1 in 10 people own it. Bobby Reed - Time is right, this has got to have been listed on ebay at least every fortnight over the last year, is this the same copy or is there a steady flow coming through. This seems to me to be a record who's price possibley doesn't compare to its rarity. Interest rates do also play a part, with the MPC looking to raise another 25bp's later this year, it will affect buying. How many people only use disposible income to buy records? There have been quite a few threads on the lack of "new blood" on the (UK) scene and people giving up. If there are no new buyers again the price will drop. Some dealers do drop their prices, but it seems that other dealers don't, with these records availiable on their sites for months. This is similar for price guides, if a record is bought for less its considered a bargain rather than the true price. Weve all paid over the odds for a record from time to time, but that's all part of an open market. As with all markets there are peaks and troughs, with NS seeing continual growth (above inflation) over the last (at least) 10 years. Maybe this is a time for a correction? Weve also seen a lot of comments on the values in price guides being too high, which is possibly giving sellers the wrong impression as to what they'll get for it. Can anyone tell me if any record has gone down in subsequesnt price guides?

Lps, Don't You Just Love Em
I too love the cover art, curtom albums especially... A lot of Curtom LP's upto about 75 I thought had social themes, with lots of shots in alleyways (especially on Impressions LP's): The Young Mods forgotten Story, Finally Got Myself Together, Times have changed. I think for me, the LP "Preacher Man" is the most powerful, with the head and sholders of a clergyman, with tears coming down his face (he's in a brick alleyway of course). It seems to sum up the "black awareness" including Mayfields own views that had been coming through since the late 60's. I've always been a geek when it comes to gate folds and extras such as lyric sheets

Soul Children - All their Stax output. I love It's out of my hands from the Friction LP, which is overshadowed by whats happening baby

Cheap Lp But Expensive 7''
I sold one last week for £25, I've seen them in the range of £30-£50. I was told many years ago that there were only 50 pressed on Fynal Vynal, but how cost effective would that have been to press up such a small amount, so it's never really rung true with me. If it is true that there was only 50, was it a real release or a boot, can someone confirm? I bought the Bunky issue from Ian Clark at one of his do's in 1990 and it came out of a box newly opend box of at least 50 Lew Kirton - Just Arrived (Heaven In The Afternoon) and bringing in 12"s on version on TK disco. My preference is for the longer version as I like the extra verse. Onto the 12"s J's - When Did I Stop Loving You Kenny Hamber - Never Found A Girl (Pes vs Million Dollar) Jay Player - Love Is The Answer (the sunset labe' rather than the red/white boot) Kapp Ivory Project - Its Over Universal Love - Its You Girl (Glades vs TK Disco)

Cheap Lp But Expensive 7''
Prince Gideon - Smooth Sailing John Gary Williams - Whole Damn World Rivage - Sitting on It (Strung out on your love) Its still an expensive LP, but the LP version IMO is not a patch on the single and it's so long.... No so much an expensive 7" but dearer than the LP Richard Williams - Where Do I Go (Wouldn't you rather have me)
-
Cheap Lp But Expensive 7''
Garland Green - Jelous Kind of Fella (various, buts its on Uni rather than revue/gamma) Ruby Andrews - Black Ruby (Just Lovin You) Natural 4 - Good Vibes (Thought You Were Mine) Roosvelt Grier - Soul City (In My Tenament) Jackie Wilson - Beautiful Day (Because of You) Not to sure on the price differential on this Alex Brown - In Search Of Love (I'm not responsible)

Lps, Don't You Just Love Em
On the 70's side the two LP's that I cant stop playing start to finish since I put them on my Ipod are Paul Kelly - Dont Burn Me and Hooked Hogtied and Collared IMO you cant get better than these. Up there near the top is the Modulations - It's Rough Out Here I cant put individual standout tracks as you can put the needle anywhere.

Contacts - You Gonna Pay - Quadran
Is the label design the same as the Naturals, just a different colour? Any chance of a scan please? John
-
Contacts - You Gonna Pay - Quadran
boba, I assume that the represses are white and not red/yellow(gold). Thanks for that. Cheers, John
-
Contacts - You Gonna Pay - Quadran
Represses and other lables seem to be a hot topic for me at the moment... How can you tell the difference between the original and the repress of the Contacts - You Gonna Pay on Quadran? Different matrix numbers, label differences, etc... Thanks in advance. John

Lee Bates - What Am I Gonna Do - Instant/ix Chains
Andy, I agree the Ichiban version is better IMO too and one I've still to get. Sadly I was oblivious to too many new releases at the time (my loss and have paid the price for that recently). One thing that I've never actually seen, is an issue of the IX Chains release. I don't own one, as I've been waiting to see an issue for sale. John

Lee Bates - What Am I Gonna Do - Instant/ix Chains
I recon about £30-40, but could be wrong
-
Lee Bates - What Am I Gonna Do - Instant/ix Chains
The flip on both the "Instant" and "IX Chains" releases is Your Love Is Slipping Away. This is one of the reasons I've posted the question, it just seems too coincidental that both sides of each disc are the same as each other, but on different labels for them to be different recordings. If someone doesn't do it before me, I'll do some digging and find the copy of voices the discography was in. John

James D. Hall - I Wanna Get Into You
Are there matrix numbers in the run out, if so are they the same? I mailed him on the question of repressings also and have a reply on my email at home, which I will post up tonight. I bit the bullet and bought one from his site for $80 last week, but still awaiting a debit on my account, which hasnt come through yet. If consensus is that they are represses I think potentially there will be a lot of returns. John
-
Lee Bates - What Am I Gonna Do - Instant/ix Chains
Are they exactly the same recording? Was Instant the "local" release and IX Chains put out for a larger distribution? Steve Plumb, commented on the record when he wrote the IX Chains discography in Voices, but I cant find that edition at the moment. Cheers, John

George Jackson - Don't Use Me Mercury
One finished on ebay on Sunday at just over £100

Can I Really Be A Soul Fan
Surely Soul is Soul whatever the tag put to it. Here are just three records I have heard/danced at do's over the years and the other sides are listened to at home. Sam Williams - Love Slipped Through My Finger/Lets Talk It Over - Tower Bill Brandon - Something Wonderful/Rainbow Road - Tower Candi Statten - Too Hurt To Cry/Mr & Mrs Untrue - Fame Are they Northern - yes, are they deep - yes. They just happen to be on the other side to each other. It's the dancier side thats played out and associated as Northen, because all a do is (and I'm trying to find a better term, but cant at the moment), is a "disco". There are a few beat ballads that have been classed as Northen, Cody Black - MR Blue springs to mind and I've had trouble dancing to that. The more tunes, whatever their clasification that can be given airplay (at a do/radio or on here) can only be good for soul in general.

New Released Wd's Why Are They Twice As Much To Buy?
I'm expecting a lot of stick for this post, but I would like some clarification. Originally (I thought) WD's were sent to radio stations/DJ's to promote interest in a record and stimulate the general public into buying a record when it was officially released. These were limited press, as the record companies didn't want to spend too much on pressing records if they flopped. Why are the demo's of Selecta, Hayley, Grapevine and other labels selling for double the issues? Today is a different market to the 60's/70's and there is probably a smaller collecting circle and with web sites like this and the others, raising the profiles of new releases. When these records are advertised, both issues and demo's seem to be for sale simultaneously, which to me, seems that a false market has been created. I know some people like demo's more than issues (i'm the other way, with a preference for issues). Is there a real need to charge this premium? What is the ratio of Demo's to issues pressed? I'm not having a go at these labels, I'd just like more clarity as I seem to see a lot more demo's than issues for sale on various web sites. John
