  5. Hi Jazzy Brit. We were with you on the soul train cruise (and the first one out of Fort Lauderdale in Feb 13) and agree that it was the best holiday ever. Still buzzin about it 6 weeks later. BTW, after the chat we had about The Exciters I downloaded 'Reaching For The Best'. What a great track.
  6. Dont have a wasted journey! It appears the Shop has now closed which is a shame. Went there yesterday & there was just an empty unit! Maybe someone can enlighten us as to when & why it has closed & whether it may reappear at a new location at some point in the future.

  10. Thanks for that Stacey's dad, it was brilliant. What a great, much loved guy !! Loved the Stevie wonder/cow story too !!!!!
  11. Sad to hear this. I'll never forget when Al visited my old office at Ardent Music in late 1992. We all had a few drinks while Al played the piano and we all sang the recent Boyz II Men hit 'End Of The Road' because George Bush Sr had just lost the election to Bill Clinton. Al was delighted that it was the end of the road for Mr Bush and I always think of Al whenever I hear that song. He was a great man. Rest in peace.
  12. Great Post: A True Artist saw him many times and it was never a bad show greatly missed he always had time and was loved by many RIP
  13. We were spoilt to have the legend on our doorstep, where else could you nip out on a Sunday night and see Edwin Starr singing live in a pub.

  15. Whats the venue - Church - Location at which the interview takes place ? Leopard print - Took me back ( But only as far as the Rovers Return. Watched it four times - Still practicing some of the moves !
  16. Was there ever a bad song sung by the Four Tops? I can remember listening to a late night pirate radio station in the mid 60's, and hearing Baby I need your loving for the first time, loved them then and still do now. Heres some of my favourites. Baby I need your loving - Just ask the lonely - I'm in a different world - what is a man - shake me wake me -Mcarthurs Park - Are you man enough - Keeper of the Castle, and the list goes on. Levi was the best.
  17. OPENS CURZON MAYFAIR 25 OCT.
  18. One of my favourite soul singers. Amazing voice. Some of my favourites include: Sad Souvenirs, Something About You, Sweet Was The Love, Shake Me Wake Me, The Way Nature Planned It, Baby, I Need Your Lovin', Can't Seem to Get You Out Of My Mind. There's more, but these are the ones that stand out to me more than the others. Amazing group, and Levi was a great vocalist.
  19. Thanx for the reminder Kev! I also defy anyone reading this whole thread to escape without a tear. From the 1st time I heard him sing nearly 50 years ago his vocals still leave that shiver down my spine. The best male vocalist of all time......full stop. https://youtu.be/mNWxupAvuxE Fu@ing WOW!!!
  20. I've been on for 9 years, although I noticed recently that my join date had changed. It was 25th December, now it says 26th. I was proud that I was on Soul Source on Christmas Day. Didn't the site run by Mike before this used to be called The Drunken Monkey?
  21. Just so much emotion oozes from Levis vocal cords on anything he sang. A group that spanned 40 years of hits and fabulous Lp tracks only Levi and the Tops will never be forgotten Al H
  22. Well done Mike and all past and present Mod's......
  23. I can't think of any singer who has given me more pleasure than Levi Stubbs. He had the ultimate natural heartbreaker voice and the ability to deliver a song perfectly. He also knew exactly when to stand back and let the backing vocals set the mood or carry the song for a while. Those harmonies were a crucial element and Stubbs was humble and modest enough to remain a member of The Four Tops rather than be tempted by solo stardom. The great Holland-Dozier-Holland songs and productions were obviously a key factor in the earlier period. Eddie Holland was the finest lyricist of his generation, his evocative songs were like mini teen dramas set to music. The finest example is probably 'I'm In A Different World' which is a work of art but here are just two lines from 'I'll Turn To Stone'... I would be like a statue in the park, Cold and alone; a man without a heart But the Four Tops also made great records with other writers and producers, most notably with Frank Wilson who gave them a fresh new direction, starting with 'In These Changing Times' in 1970. I was 12 years old at the time and I remember buying 'It's All In The Game' and the hypnotic 'Still Water' which is probably the best soul record ever made and I feel the need to hear it almost every day. No disrespect to any other singers but it was the voice of Levi Stubbs which got me hooked on soul music for life and I'm sure many other people had the same experience. No wonder so many tears were shed when he died. Paul
