  1. Hi Steve. I actually spend a lot of time on all the sets I do for my shows, not sure why this one seems different but either way I appreciate the compliment. I did win the philtrations on ebay but it was on ebay twice recently. The first time it went for much less and I missed it. But the high bidder on the first one was DJ Honky so I'm glad it went down the way it went down. Sorry if I outbid you. There are a lot of records on that phoenix label, there were two guys that ran and produced everything on it, Calvin Wade and "Twinkles" Smith. There are the two Magnum 45s and an LP they did (kool and the gang type group). There are the two aftermath 45s. There is the great expectations 45, the original label that got picked up by Phila O Soul. The label was from LA but obviously they had philly connections for distribution. I think there's at least one more thing that I can't think of right now.
  2. Roburt: that is the second one I mentioned already. Can you give me the info for the 3rd one? I would greatly appreciate it. Also, any insight on the lineup of grand theft? thanks so much.
  3. you complained about the word "holy grail" before, but it sounds like your problem is with people overusing it. e.g. I would call frank wilson a "grail" record.
  4. the bell boys are not from ohio, it wasn't recorded there and it was just released on an ohio label. The bell boys are from Aliquippa, PA and are the same group as the three rivers blue band on lion. They went to high school with the El Pooks (who later became the Stringfield Family). One other group from that city was the Soulistics.
  5. I know a couple of the five chances if you want contact into to talk them. One of them has a really good memory. And I'm pretty sure Johnny Keyes is still around.
  6. Thanks a lot for the info. I'm confused though -- are you saying Grand Theft has some connection to Episode Six or just that it was produced by one of the members of exit 6 (the guy who was in deep purple). I did notice a "ross" in the writing credits, which is one of the names you mention above as members of episode six. I assume this is the LP? https://www.ebay.com/itm/GRAND-THEFT-have-you-seen-band-LP-8-track-white-label-test-pressing-st-/200718735716?pt=UK_Records&hash=item2ebbc4d964#ht_1493wt_830 I didn't know that there were 3 45s. I see they have another one called "love burns" on EMI UK. Do you have any info on a 3rd single? Are the other two also soulish or are they straight rock? thanks a lot.
  7. sorry I can't add anything. I know much about 50s groups / records and I think artists I have interviewed have never mentioned that studio. Sorry.
  8. thanks a lot i appreciate it
  9. I was just commenting that it didn't sound 70s, which it doesn't. No commentary positive or negative on the actual music. if someone doesn't know the different sounds they shouldn't be making the comparison.

  11. this doesn't sound like 70s soul it sounds like 80s R&B. like post-Sade. what 70s soul artist / track is comparable? p.s. welcome to soul source
  12. did any other of their productions come out on their label and then a bigger label?
  13. Here's one of their productions that was released on their label and actually picked up by bell. I've never seen it on bell (but I also wasn't looking very hard...) https://www.ebay.com/itm/390424726434?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_500wt_1083
  14. i had 3 records arrive broken on different days in the last week (really). I buy a lot of records though. My postal carrier is very professional and she isn't the person who broke them. The best way to avoid broken packages is to pack well, not to purchase a specific service.
  15. Personally I would rather have a mint record with a red circle on the label on one side than a trashed record with clean labels. Everybody values different things with respect to the record. If I were set saleing this I would knock maybe $50 off the regular price. Obviously the WOL makes a bigger difference to Pete which is why he would sell it much cheaper.
  16. That WOL means different things to different buyers. I would stick it on ebay and let the people that don't care about the WOL bid on it and the people that do care think the bidders are stupid. It removes any agency on your part.
  17. Thanks, I always thought it was a slow version of the same song, but I never listened closely. Thanks for clarifying.
  18. Hi. I'm not sure what you're asking here, but the fabulous dimensions was first (earlier catalog number). The group had like 3 more records under different names.
  19. I have had plenty of records broken, often specifically mailed in those "envelope" mailers with the non-existent rigidity of the specific filler pads people use. I wouldn't use one of those to mail a mile away from me, much less overseas. Whenever I get a broken record though I'll send a photo of it. Unfortunately for you, paypal will side with the buyer if the buyer opens up a claim. You probably have to write it off as a loss now. If I were the seller I would ask for a photo and then refund the person's money, as at least in that case the buyer has the perception of you as a helpful seller. Either way they're getting their money back.
  20. I do this, I'll over $20 for a hi-res scan of the photo which is more than enough money for the work involved in scanning and emailing. I'm not like a serious photo collector, I'm not paying $100+ for an original photo. The funniest one for me in this thread so far is "last chance before ebay" -- stupid for so many reasons.
  21. I only got obsessive about them recently. I used to put records on my shelf in the tattered torn apart sleeves that they came in, even if they were like $500 records. Then like less than a year ago I started buying the heavy gauge gold sleeves and putting the records in that. If a record comes in a crisp company sleeve I'll leave it in that, but if the company sleeve is tattered I'll put the record in the gold sleeve and, if the company sleeve is worth keeping with the record, everything together in a plastic sleeve. I do that with pic sleeves so they don't split more. I like the heavy gauge sleeves alone, I don't put them in plastic (I actually take off the plastic if it comes in plastic) and almost never put them in a card sleeve (it makes it harder to play or DJ with). I recently got paranoid about vinyl sleeve offgassing ruining records, after reading on other messageboards and seeing photos, and seeing a few examples in my collection that I received from other people. I went through and removed any poly-lined paper sleeves. Bags unlimited says that their polyethylene and polypropylene sleeves are tested to be inert and only the polyvinyl sleeves will offgass (they sell them for "temporary storage") but I'm not risking it. When I receive a record in a poly lined sleeve I take it out -- I don't know what material it is and if it is inert like the bags unlimited ones.
  22. I still don't understand how 80% of the time when I get a record from the UK, they are in one of these sleeves and nothing else. These sleeves are intended to go around the paper sleeve that the record is already in. The record loose in these sleeves moves around and gets bumped / scuffed.
  23. "priced to sell" = "priced to sell to dumb rich people"
