The Film - Reviews
Saw it last night in Bury St Edmunds and it was worth the drive from Peterborough. I really enjoyed the film, that's it as far as the review goes other than to say Steve Coogan's character is nothing like Alan Partridge, as has been suggested on here previously. However, his character is like so many of the teachers that I encountered in school in the 70's. It seemed rather appropriate watching the film in a small independent cinema rather than one of the soulless multiplexes. A little bit like the feeling you get from being at the 100 Club when you're 1 of 200 like minded souls in a City that has a population of 10M who have no idea what you're doing. I

Northern Soul The Film - See It At The Cinema
Indeed he does look like him, because it is John Altman in the scene you refer to.

Secret/hidden Tracks On Cds
I'm sure this was covered in a thread a few years back and seem to remember Dave Thorley mentioning that he'd played it out and giving the artist name that he'd used. I'm sure that there was some doubt as to who the artist was though.

A Couple Of Inexpensive Wants
A couple of inexpensive wants. Only interested in very clean vinyl with preferably clean labels, although the odd stain or mark isn’t too much of a problem for me. Please PM with price and condition. I’m happy to pay what I believe is the going rate, but not really interested in going more than a couple quid over that value. Tony & Tyrone - Please Operator - US Atlantic ( Not interested in the UK copy) - now sourced thanks Dorothy Berry & Jimmy Norman — I’m with you all the way - little star Thanks Shaun

The Older I Get The More New Stuff I Want To Hear
Same here Richard. Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said that a man who tires of hearing new music is a man who tires of life? Or am I getting that bit confused in my old age? Wilde definitely said A poor DJ, sorry cynic is a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. The value of a record cannot simply be determined by it's rarity alone, value must take into account the quality of the finished product, regardless of the price tag. I love to hear stuff that's new to my ears, it's great to hear records that I'll never be able to own because of either rarity or price but it's just as rewarding hearing and hunting down less expensive items that I've only recently come across. I've got quite a few items on long time wants lists that never seem to get bought, not because I can't find or afford them, but because I'm always finding something that's new to me that I'd rather spend my money on.

Info Wanted - London Record Shops / Markets
Thanks for the input, it's certainly crytalised my thinking on how much time to spend looking for vinyl. However, we will set aside enough time to visit a couple of our favourite watering holes. The Albion in Goldsmith's Row ( Near Broadway Market ) and The Nags Head Belgravia, loved them both the last time we were in town. Cheers Shaun

Info Wanted - London Record Shops / Markets
Hope this is the right place to post. We'll be in London for a couple of days following the 100 Club christmas party and wanted to use some of the time digging for vinyl. I'd be grateful for any information on worthwhile record stores and markets to visit selling second hand 45's and 33's. Have done a little web research but would prefer to hear from SS members as to where to go and where to avoid. Thanks in advance. Shaun

Instrumentals
I've never been a fan, it always reminded me of the Marine Boy theme. Actually having just listened to it, Marine Boy that is, I think that Marine Boy is much the better track, although still truely awful. Now, where's my Oxy-gum https://youtu.be/8ujZZUjovDs

I remember seeing him on Jools Holland's Later 3 or 4 years ago doing Sure Hope You Mean It, he's certainly very talented.

Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
The threads called - Inexpensive Records For Big Djs? In an attempt to get it back on track here's an inexpensive little number that was spun by Gary Spencer many moons ago amongst his big ticket items. It never took off and didn't go on to become an in demand sound, perhaps because it lacks soul content. It doesn't come up for sale that often even though it can still be bought for about a tenner. Sometimes an inexpensive item might just seem right for a certain night or occasion, it isn't always about attempting to have it go huge and become this weeks most indemand sound even though there are a few Dj's who have the ability to do that for a record. https://youtu.be/hKiuxetwWSQ

Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
This isn't rare, not when compared to records where only a handful exist, but all things are relative. There are certainly loads of more expensive records that are much more readily available than this, low on value, but definitely not on quality. https://youtu.be/BTjIi803Bhk

Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
So very true, I know a fair bit about the records I own and those I wish to own but in the grand scheme of things I can accept that I really know f*ck all. However, I’m still able to discuss, on a regular basis, records of mine that some of my friends don't know and in return they put me onto things that I've never heard before; that's part of the joy of hunting down and collecting records. JM recently said, quite genuinely and sincerely, to a close friend of mine who he was doing some insurance work with, that one of the joys of his business, even now, is that every week he still comes across records that he'd not heard before. I feel the same, but I'm hearing stuff that's new to me every day. I don’t think that, for the majority of us, there’s any danger of us ever running out of records to listen to that are new to our ears. Unfortunately, as the soul population reaches ever advancing years I do see us running out of people who listen to these records though. Will the last man please turn out the lights? Naturally for those KTF, It’ll never be over for me, Northern Soul - it’s a way of life, Right On Soul Brother / Sister types then I apologise for talking complete B*ll*cks.

Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
Loads of Dj's who copy others, loads of Dj's who play the same tired sets, that doesn't show a grest deal of taste or originality for me. Perhaps I was over the top on the ratio between those with and those without taste but there are certainly many more Dj's who seem to successfully demonstate a real lack of taste week in and week out.

Inexpensive Records For Big Djs?
Quality soul is never cheap, but it can be inexpensive. My favourite Dj's have always been able to throw in the occasional, and sometimes more than occasional, less expensive tune into their sets, it's very much part of what makes them quality DJ's. However, it doesn't matter if you're buying records at £10 or £1000 the only thing that you can't buy is taste, and having great taste is the thing that separates a smallish group of Premier League DJ's from the rest.

Northern Soul - Rare Soul
Absolutely first class, very occasionally a few simple words can mean so much more than what appears on the page. This gets my vote for the best oxymoron this year.

Live Recordings @ Nighters
I've always preferred good recordings of cr*p nighters.

New Northern Soul Film Promo
Northern Soul is a film drama; it isn’t a documentary, so I don’t understand why so many — without having seen it — want to pass judgement on it as if it were a documentary. I personally love Quadrophenia as a film, I know some don’t, and I’m not suggesting it’s the best film ever made, but it’s a favourite of mine. It isn’t a 100% accurate depiction of the 1960’s mod scene in London but that doesn’t detract from my enjoyment of the film. For some it’s always going to be easier to be a critic than a creative.

So Many Djs... Why?
So Many Djs... Why? Simple answer, there aren't. It's certainly true that there are lots of people who stand behind the decks playing records, but that doesn't make them DJ's, it simply makes them, people who stand behind the decks playing records. We might go out and drive a race car for the day but it won't make many of us racing drivers, will it ? I think that many of the previous posts have quite accurately detailed the reasons why so many people want to, or beleive that they can DJ. Nothing is going to change that, not this late in the day, we're all involved in a scene where the number of supporters / attendees is slowly diminishing as the number of DJ's appears to be increasing, the numbers just don't add up,it's hardly rocket science. Actually, there are many venues now where all of the attendees are DJ's, it's just that much like the acting profession, 90% of them are not working or never will work. So what makes a real DJ, it's already been said, but I'll add this, it's having that special quality that makes it really worthwhile going out of the house on a cold November night and travelling 100 miles to hear their set. So on that basis there probably aren't that many DJ's about after all. During the 80's and 90's when I was attending nighters regulalry there were 10 to 12 DJ's who I really loved to hear, Today, some of the names have changed, but for me, there's still only 10 or 12.
