The Most Miserable Record Dealer
Ha, great thread. I think I missed this the first time around. No names to add but some comments on a few already mentioned: 1. The guy at House of Oldies in NYC. I LIVE in New York and have for 25+ years and have been in this place only once, maybe 20 years ago. I happened to come prepared with a wants list in my pocket and produced it when he asked what I was looking for. He said, "Pay me $20 and I'll look at your list." 2. The Count. Let me just say this: Never give him your phone number. 3. Val Shively. Nothing but lovely over the years (chatty, funny, buys you lunch if you're there for a while) except one time soon after he said he'd been robbed of a rare record when he essentially made me strip off two layers of clothes and leave them with him before he'd allow me to look through his stock. 4. DJ Beans at the now-defunct D&J Records in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. No problems except the one time he made the mistake of yelling at my (tough, record-collecting) girlfriend for some silly reason and she nearly came to blows with him. 5. Rich Rosen. I think he's mellowed over the years. Last time I went he was pretty nice and funny, though his prices can still be stupid. But he usually throws in freebies, too. And when I found he'd overcharged me for one record on my last visit, I called him and he apologized, claimed ignorance, and gave me an immediate refund. But the FIRST time I was there, this happened: I spent most of a day going through unpriced 45s and had amassed quite a stack by closing time. He said he'd price them overnight and they'd be ready first thing in the morning. As I was walking out the door he turned to his wife and said loudly so I could hear, "You know, honey, this guy's a shmuck! If he had any brains he'd be taking me out for a big steak dinner so he could learn about records from me." I chuckled and left. The next morning the records were still sitting where I'd left them, unpriced. Oh, haven't seen this name mentioned: DON PARKER. Used to buy from him over the phone all the time 15-20 years or so ago, but then he started getting rude and cocky and I stopped dealing with him. When I saw him at Allentown a few years later he said "WOW! You've lost a lot of hair and packed on some pounds!"

Newark Label? Recommendations?
Best thing on the label for me is the Out-Crowds, "Shake Yourself"/"I've Got a Right to Cry"...stomping mod soul pounder b/w soulful male group ballad. Agree that the label design is a knockout!

Roy Handy - Baby That's A Groove - Lyrics?
And the Funkadelic version omits the "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide" line, hence no Holland and Dozier writing credits? Robb, I should know this, but where were the Stephanye records (there are three, right?) recorded, mastered, pressed? Who's playing on this one? Great info, keep it coming, man!

Roy Handy - Baby That's A Groove - Lyrics?
Here, I've taken a crack at it for you. Two o'clock in the morning and all the joints have just closed We picked up a bag of fish and chips and we headed for this place called home Love is on our mind, hey hey, and we're in the mood It's just a matter of time, oh, and baby, that's a groove My imagination is something else It's like looking through a crystal ball and what I see looks good to me as we climb the steps and walk down the hall Before I put the key in the lock, hey hey, I just had to stop because my baby turned and kissed me, said we've no time to lose I said, "Good, oh baby, that's a groove" Sweat was popping off of my face and [indecipherable lead vocal echoed by what sounds like "shit" from the backing singers] was all over the place You should have seen my baby move now that we had found our groove [MIKE TERRY BARITONE BREAK!] Put on a stack of fine 45s like "Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide" Found our groove and was having fun We were jumping [jamming? dancing?] to the sound of Junior Walker's "Shotgun" Sweat was popping off of my face and fish and chips was all over the place You should have seen my baby move now that we had found our groove...[repeat/fade] Then there's this later version, with a funkier beat and a Kinks-like backing chorus...

Perfections Which One Am I (Twinight) ...the Flip Side
Interesting that writing credits are different.
-
Motown - The Musical
Saw the show. Pretty lame script, but they really found some incredibly talented folks for the cast. Standouts were the guy who plays Smokey, the young lad doing Michael Jackson, and the Diana lady. Highly entertaining and well worth seeing despite Berry-aggrandizing tone and clumsy dialogue.

Perfections Which One Am I (Twinight) ...the Flip Side
- New York Record Stores
It's a sad state of affairs. New York is hands-down the worst big city in the U.S. when it comes to record stores. Add to that the fact that there are probably 10 times as many people here looking for records as in any other city in the U.S., and the situation is just the pits.- Fantastic Epics - Kelton
