  1. Clarence Paul, Baby Don't You Leave Poor Me (Federal) Johnnie Mae Matthews, No More Tears (Big Hit OR Reel)
  2. Interesting record but wow do I not like it. Enjoy your find but I hope I never have to hear it again!
  3. And the Funkadelic version omits the "Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide" line, hence no Holland and Dozier writing credits? Robb, I should know this, but where were the Stephanye records (there are three, right?) recorded, mastered, pressed? Who's playing on this one? Great info, keep it coming, man!
  4. I think it's actually the Mel Taylor cover version on Warner Bros.
  5. Here, I've taken a crack at it for you. Two o'clock in the morning and all the joints have just closed We picked up a bag of fish and chips and we headed for this place called home Love is on our mind, hey hey, and we're in the mood It's just a matter of time, oh, and baby, that's a groove My imagination is something else It's like looking through a crystal ball and what I see looks good to me as we climb the steps and walk down the hall Before I put the key in the lock, hey hey, I just had to stop because my baby turned and kissed me, said we've no time to lose I said, "Good, oh baby, that's a groove" Sweat was popping off of my face and [indecipherable lead vocal echoed by what sounds like "shit" from the backing singers] was all over the place You should have seen my baby move now that we had found our groove [MIKE TERRY BARITONE BREAK!] Put on a stack of fine 45s like "Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide" Found our groove and was having fun We were jumping [jamming? dancing?] to the sound of Junior Walker's "Shotgun" Sweat was popping off of my face and fish and chips was all over the place You should have seen my baby move now that we had found our groove...[repeat/fade] Then there's this later version, with a funkier beat and a Kinks-like backing chorus...
  6. 253 is 205-2109/2110. Does that make sense?
  7. I still don't think I've ever heard this darn thing!
  8. Interesting that writing credits are different.
  9. Saw the show. Pretty lame script, but they really found some incredibly talented folks for the cast. Standouts were the guy who plays Smokey, the young lad doing Michael Jackson, and the Diana lady. Highly entertaining and well worth seeing despite Berry-aggrandizing tone and clumsy dialogue.
  10. It's a sad state of affairs. New York is hands-down the worst big city in the U.S. when it comes to record stores. Add to that the fact that there are probably 10 times as many people here looking for records as in any other city in the U.S., and the situation is just the pits.
  11. What's the current price on this? I have a mintish one I might let go...

  16. If anyone outside the U.S. is interested in booking Hannibal for a gig, I can get you in touch with him. He's interested especially in France and the U.K....
  17. Howzabout Gino's "It's Only a Paper Moon"? A pop standard, of course, written by Harold Arlen.
  18. I've had several incredibly lucky days over the years...one of the most memorable was circa 1996 in suburban Detroit at a heavy-metal record shop I'd driven by dozens of times but never checked out. Decided to take a look inside one day and it was pretty much what I expected: rock LPs and CDs and T-shirts and posters. I'd barely walked five steps into the place and was turning to leave when two 2-foot stacks of unsleeved 45s in the corner caught my eye. I crouched down to thumb through them and found three keepers: Marvin Gaye "Teen Beat Song," Dusty Wilson "It's Gonna Be a Tragedy," and Gwen Owens "Just Say You're Wanted and Needed." Total: $1.50 plus tax.
  19. Thanks for the replies. I think it's a great song. How does one get one's hands on this "clean" version?
  20. Are all copies of this kind of muffled and bad-sounding? Or just mine?
  21. Fabulous Caprices, Groovy World/My Love (Camaro). Funk b/w sweet soul ballad. Visually M-, with perfect labels. It's a quiet-ish pressing and plays with some light fuzz/noise. Fabulous Originals, It Ain't Fair, But It's Fun (Pts. 1 and 2) (Jewel). Superheavy Ohio funk. Visually M-, perfect labels, plays with a wee bit of noise but music is so loud it doesn't matter. EACH ONE IS $340 $300 U.S.. BUY BOTH FOR $650 $590 plus shipping. PAYPAL GIFT ONLY.

  23. Brooks Brothers, "Lookin' for a Woman." This is a DJ COPY. "DJ COPY" is stamped on both labels. Otherwise perfect labels, glossy M- vinyl. Looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. Way better than any copy I see on popsike. Best offer over £1200 gets it. Paypal gift only, within three days. Express Mail shipping provided free. ADDITIONS (M-/VG++/VG+/VG): Tito Puente's Orchestra, "Have a Ball Baby"/"T.P.'s Shing-a-ling" (Tico)...RARE one by him, two dance sides. Condition: strong VG, almost VG+, except one deep scratch that causes clicks for several revolutions from start on "Have a Ball" side; loud music drowns them out after half a dozen revolutions or so, though; still works fine for DJ'ing. Also has bb hole and edge chip that doesn't come near playing surface. $150. Ray Charles, "I Don't Need No Doctor" (ABC-Para). VG++ (gold star on label). $30 Tito Puente, "A La Salud"/"Cute Chick" (RCA Victor). VG+. $30 Joe Hicks, "Don't It Make You Feel Funky"/"I Gotta Be Free)" (AGP) The rare one! Beautiful, shiny, new VG++ copy with perfect labels. $950 (cf. collectorsfrenzy copy at $1,200) Miss Lavell, "Run to You" (Duke). Very strong VG (writing on B-side label). $25. The "5" Royales, "They Don't Know" (Vee-Jay). VG. $50. Sarah Vaughan, "What's So Bad About It" (Mercury). Killer dancer that should be better known. Strong VG. $25. Shipping $10 outside U.S. Paypal gift.
