  5. Hope the 100 is rammed Ady. Alternatively, if you can't manage a niter or dat der London, we're having a little bash in the NW where, and I don't think I'm speaking out of turn, you'll hear some of the best sounds played on our scene over the last 30+ years - major rarities, cheapies n things you can't hear anywhere else, side by side. A fiver and a bit of effort is all that's required. Contrary to what some would have us believe it ain't all doom n gloom n wall to wall tosh, not even up here and not by a long chalk.
  6. Cash needed for new vinyl so five crackers for sale. 7. There are people out there who consistently play high class sets / records that not everyone else does (and which aren't necessarily all worth a fortune). Takes considerable effort, knowledge and skill to do that I reckon. As Gareth said earlier, they all cost the same to make didn't they. Still under 20 quid and as good as most IMHO https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ukz1qXz7RUo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j9cKbsBveE&feature=player_detailpage
  8. Composers great double sider and dead cheap
  9. That's Fortnum's Ronco sound system for ya Ted Yep, recorded in a phonebox near you. (Which only adds to its charm imho and perhaps goes some way towards explaining its rarity?) Looked for it since Guy used to play it without even a sniff til that one turned up last year. Just shows they're out there ... you just gotta give it 25+ years in some cases
  10. I'd go anywhere and everywhere I could hear what I wanted to, as often as I could. Think most of us were the same weren't we?
  11. I think those of us who might consider ourselves part of the 'rare' scene have only ourselves to blame in some respects. It's all become so fragmented, which is one reason why there seem to be so many dos with little or no real atmosphere. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy then: why would you travel to that? Ironically enough, it's the very use of categories n pigeonholes like 'rare', 'underplayed' etc etc which add to the problem imo, by further fragmenting things. To me they're totally meaningless and divisive. As we all know and as everyone says, there's something which happens every weekend which is nothing whatsoever to do with people who collect seriously and / or who have been / still are regular nighter goers. The odd one or two might make the occasional, tentative foray into the real deal and stick with it which is fantastic; most never have and never will though and I'm happy about that to be honest. Rather than blame everyone and everything else, the people who claim to be really 'into it', and have the scars to prove it, need to get off their arses, stop being so self-absorbed and ego driven, get things in perspective and start pulling together. What got you into it? For me it was "kinell, what's that" ... dancing like a maniac and losing yourself alongside a load of right into it, like-minded numpties, wading through boxes looking for stuff and talking b*llocks. Its harder n harder to find nowadays (not the b*llocks , there's any amount of that still) Whether our mam likes a bit of Freda Payne with her mates and thinks shes into 'NS' doesn't worry me one iota. The fact that for so many the things which made it different and special, including [musical] quality, integrity and broadmindedness - first, second and last - seem to have got lost somewhere along the way does though. We don't help ourselves most of the time. Gone too far? I dunno but I'm less and less motivated by and enthusiastic about much of whats on offer these days. (Not the music / records btw, they're still first, second n last).
  12. Funds needed for new vinyl so following for sale. All really strictly graded (vg+ means just that, not fooked - check my feedback). No dramas anyway, just send it back as is if you're unhappy. Otherwise NM https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=DjInYk_xets Mickey Lanay - I'm gonna walk (Vulcan) Ex £90 The oft used 'ripe for reactivation' applies here I think. How good does this sound now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVBao8GZJN0&feature=player_detailpage Al Hughes - take it or leave it (Scope) Ex+ £300 Rarer record than many think I reckon. Old 'Superlatives' c/u and still plenty of mileage left in it (pitch it up a tad!) Can't find a clip but if you know it you'll know you won't get it cheaper. Cheers Phil
  13. Philt replied to Dazdakin's topic in Record Sales
RS I think, briefly, but primarily Shaun Gibbons at Morecambe still c/u. Still got mine. Rare record, took me years to find out what it was (by accident). As you say, not everyones bag by any means but hey ho. (For me it'll forever be 17 or so and absolutely away with em lol) Good luck with the sale Dazz Atb Phil
  14. Richard Anthony magic, rare too
  15. Was just thinking that. Rob Marriott's 'Ambassadors' c/u wasn't it? Great record!
  16. I bought the one on here a couple of months ago, one went through ebay sometime in last 12m. Other than that never had a chance to own it since I started collecting. In my all-time top half a dozen
  17. Played the Mustangs out for ages on and off pitched up to about +3 (that may even have been a spare I picked up Mark, from memory?) The hook always reminds me a bit of the Chandlers. Anyway, really fair price I think as not a common 45 by any means.
  18. Didn't watch it 'live' for fear of having to curl up in a ball [again] but caught it on here last night - thanks for posting it up! (Searling was eloquent as ever, enjoyed that extended clip of him being interviewed). Thought it was ok on the whole; good in parts with the odd moment but then that's a pretty fair reflection of a night out these days. Pretty much everything has been said I think so won't add much other than ... They say there's no such thing as bad advertising don't they? My only regret is that the things the programme 'advertised', in the main, weren't really the bits that need advertising IMHO. That said, you've gotta start somewhere and if one or two have a look as a result I can't see that being a bad thing. (Thought it captured the 'feeling' bit pretty well which is never easy is it). Question is, how many would really get with it and stay with it beyond the social / nostalgia thing? That's the enduring problem for the bit of the 'scene' I like to think I'm part of and which, in my opinion, was never and has never really been represented via the media much at all beyond the Tony's / 100 Club clips of yore which, in Blackburn's case, presented it in a somewhat gloomy, parochial light. Anyway, as I say, you gotta start somewhere ... gloomy and parochial is something to aspire to, naturally; those young uns'll get there in the end if they stick with it Overall, it was both better and worse than it couldv'e been IMHO (if that makes sense).
  19. Did anyone advise Guy re the black singer 'rule'? People move on and Keb's done a fair bit of that in his time and good on him. Influential though he undeniably was, I'm not sure he was the only person breaking records during that period was he, or necessarily the best / most prolific for that matter? Moreover, how could what one person played and what he thinks now, some 25+ years later, be used as some sort of yardstick to compare a decade and a bit / with what went before? One fella's opinion at the end of the day and I've always respected the fact that he's always had one and never been afraid to express it (or loose the proverbial cat ) It's been said before on here, sh*te got played everywhere including Stafford and a good number of the things which patently weren't 'northern' in the 'traditional' sense don't stand the test of time that well because, erm, they were of their time. Some feckin unbelievable stuff got an airing too though and, exciting or not, I'd rather here Bobby Mac's shy guy than feckin rockabillly or wtf it is I think I've probably bitten there
  20. This 'scene' has been 'dead' for donkey's years and dies again periodically in some people's eyes; depends what you want out of it I guess and its fair to say that those who appear to want what I do are in a minority and have been for quite some time. Hey ho, if people sat on their arses and did nothing when Wigan closed its doors half the people on here wouldn't ever have got involved at all, myself included. The days of loads of quality new discoveries being played to buzzin rooms loaded with right up-for-it obsessives have gone for good, as have the days of a handful of major nighters scattered around the country acting as a focal point for what you might (or might not) call the 'hardcore' i.e. those looking for something beyong retro kitsch. That's sad for sure, in my eyes anyway, and I'd absolutely love it to be different but various things - age, economics, access to records / knowledge, egos i.e. everyone's a dj, saturation, watering things down, grabbing what you can, its all about me and all the other stuff that's been mentioned already - dictate that that's the way it is and, in my view, the way its gonna stay. (If you think it through and look at the things which underpinned and drove it, along with the passage and ravages of time lol, that was always gonna struggle in the world we live in now wasn't it?) Personally, I'd kill for another early - mid eighties but it ain't gonna happen again, ever. In the absence of that I'll settle for the odd night out with like minded people who want largely the same things i do out of it. Those people and places are fewer and farther between for sure but I'd like to think that as long as there's people left who genuinely care about it they'll find each other and make something worthwhile happen, they always have.
  21. I've played it out too Dek but the complete indifference was lost on Al Hughes as everything I play is greeted with the same thing. Pretty rare record I think and of those I've seen most appear to have been handled by bears.
