Just missed one for 50 Nice, clean and bout £70 tops I reckon for a w/d Cheers Phil
  2. Bloody hell, been looking for a Bobettes back @ sensible money If anyone's got a spare PM me - will post in wants anyway atb Franco, catch you soon mate! Phil
  3. Agree totally Personally, I like to hear a mix, not just across a night - that should be a given, surely - but also across a set. The best dj's have tended, IMHO anyway, to be those who could cut and paste different tempos, genres etc and find the right records to bridge the gaps and for the floor at any given time. Any clown can play an hour of one genre and most of us tend to favour one over others, although most are probably more or less eclectic outside the main stuff, in collecting records I suspect. However, very few are able to draw on the depth of collection to cover a number of bases and/or, if they do, to make best use of it. If you're dj-ing regularly at different venues I'd think that'd be prerequisite wouldn't it? For me, where breaking sounds is concerned, promoters are just as important as dj's, especially these days. Those who put events on that I want to go to and who will facilitate folk trying to push boundaries tend: - to book only djs who they think can cut the mustard at their night: i.e. not their mates, not half-arsed promoters / wanabee djs, not clowns with no records or a box full of expensive records (simply because they're expensive); - to plan ahead in terms of trying to strike a good balance across the night; - keep tabs on who is playing what and how it's going down; - tell prospective punters exactly what they can expect on the night. Similarly, any self-respecting dj will turn a spot down if they ain't got the tackle for that particular night. If all that doesn't happen it all becomes a bit of a lottery I reckon. Don't envy anyone trying to promote and keep it fresh at the mo though. I can't imagine how much organising goes into a multi-room event, not to mention the outlay involved in terms of staff, equipment and a whole raft of djs. Maybe if ... ... main room crowds had more eclectic taste and, gulp (tin hat on), genuine passion for soul music and the scene as opposed to 'their' bit of it and ... ... (tin hat again) if only those who had the records and skill to dj were asked to the whole thing would be less fragmented, easier to promote and more enjoyable? It would also make it easier to break newer tunes in main rooms I think. Obviously, some will disagree for whatever reason; fair enough, just my thoughts. I honestly do think that punters and would-be djs have it far too easy though these days and that these are primary reasons for things standing still all too often? Mine's the brown leather safari one ...
  4. PMSL Great post Baz btw!
  5. Hi Ian You'd have to ask him but I don't think Butch would want to be doing 2-3 gigs per week these days. Much as I'd love 1% of the records he has and has broken over the years - head and shoulders in my opinion, as others have also said - it must actually be pretty boring for him at times. As has already been said, I don't think there's either the 45s or the mindset anymore to drive and break the newies like there used to be. People seem to me to have different priorities insofar as collecting / dj-ing / promoting, even dancing are concerned and I'm not sure the scene is healthier in the longer term for that. However, it always had to come to terms with it's own mortality at some stage and adapt to things like people having more disposable income (happy days they were), an ageing crowd, the massive increase in venues and, generally, a more global take on the thing. It's still evolving and sorting itself out of course and will continue to do so. As ever, there will always be folk and records who step up to the mark at different times; they won't always get the credit they deserve but I think that's always been true too: one person plays it and it clears the floor and a 'name' plays it and it's rammed, them's the breaks. The days of records being turned up and over at a rate of knots are long gone of course and, even if they were around, I'm far from convinced that the appetite for them exists amongst the vast majority. Sure, the odd thing will cross over into the large rooms and venues but, other than Lifeline, I'm not sure where you'd go now to hear high quality newies on a consistent basis? For me, that's where you're most likely to hear some of the big lads pushing each other and I'm not sure that happens as much now as it once did. If anything, they all, or a few of em, have to have it to get it out there, as other's have said already. It's rare for those breaking new records to be playing to 500+ I suspect and the audience isn't, therefore, as captive as it once was. For me, it is how it is and what'll be will be. It'll never be like it was or maybe even how I'd like it to be. I reckon we might as well accept that and get on. Those in the know and who are genuinely passionate about the music and keeping the momentum going will always push on and, mostly, drag the rest along kicking and screaming. atb Phil ps. The short answer then is no, you couldn't play an upfront, in your face set peak time at one of the massive 500+ venues IMHO. Here's one for you though, post Wigan / Mecca /Stafford, where could you?
  6. Marc - that's cos you've got a good ear mate (possibly even two) and are constantly on the lookout
  7. I agree wholeheartedly with that Mark. One of the things myself and a couple of mates have often said is that we'd love to get a line-up together of people who we respect as DJs and who have good collections in terms of breadth and depth. Then we'd make em play out of one another's boxes. (Would be interesting I think to see what they pulled and played and chances are if someone looked in my 'playbox' they'd use things I tend to bypass as a matter of course, for whatever reason). It's like anything, when they're right under your nose it's all too easy to miss em. Bagsie having first pop at Butch's This is precisely one of the reasons why I've always really rated Joan as a DJ, because if she thinks it's good enough she'll give it an airing and things I can think of off the top of my head that she's really revived - not necessarily singularly of course, she certainly wouldn't thank me for claiming that on her behalf or claim it herself, but she's given em 'airtime' when most had forgotten about or overlooked em, include: Performers - I can't stop you Incredibles - miss treatment Five Stairsteps & Cubie - tell me who Ambassadors - I need someone Incredibles - crying heart Garnet Mimms - prove it to me All pretty tried and tested over the years of course, some more than others obviously, but good enough to play anywhere IMHO. I hear loads of 'DJs', and I've probably been guilty of this on those rare occasions when I've played out in the past, who simply play the 22 most expensive records they've got. No flow, little thought or creativity and it all gets a bit dull to be honest, not to mention difficult to dance to in terms of a 'set'. Great also to hear the likes of Chalky playing 45s other than the monsters that tend, by definition, to predominate on the decks at major events like Lifeline. (That's certainly not me being criticial - one of the reasons why that is an awesome nighter is because you get chance to hear stuff you don't hear much any place else - but it's also great to hear things like the Grier Bros getting an outing alongside their much more expensive counterparts; just as good too IMHO). The other 'clue' I think, and this is what Mark and one or two others have alluded to already, is that I don't think you need to try too hard to bend, redefine or even bastardise (maybe a bit strong ) genres to keep it fresh; there are plenty out there that are known and which deserve their proper 15 minutes in the sun IMHO without resorting to stuff that simply isn't up to it. It's not whether it's 'new' that matters so much to me, it's whether it's good enough. Without wanting to revive the 'top tips' thread we had recently - which goes to show that, thankfully, the hounds and some sounds are still out there pushing, prodding and pulling us also-rans along, albeit they are inevitably in much shorter supply than was the case years ago, for various and some pretty obvious reasons - get your lugs round things like these; I wouldn't and don't bat an eye at playing em alongside 1k+ records: Jimmy Norman - I'm leaving, Vontastics - let me down easy or why must we part, Vanguards - thought of losing your love, Herbs - must be an answer, Invaders - best is yet to come, Gladys Knight - tell her you're mine, Turks - you turn me on, Drake and Ensolids - fight for love, Patti Austin - too much a part of me, Bull and Matadors - if you decide / love come down ... ... Not new stuff necessarily Jim and not fortunes either but all good enough IMHO. Insofar as rarer new discoveries are concerned we are still, by and large, in the hands of people like Ady, Andy D, Rob T, Dave T, Butch et al i.e.those with centuries worth of knowledge and contacts who've kept turning em up fairly consistently over recent-ish years. I've heard some shite these last few years but I've also heard some absolutely awesome records that I'd never heard of before (which has been the case for about 30 years as far as I can recall). That's got to augur well I reckon and fair play to those who keep rooting, reviving and/or turning em up and those with the nads to play em. atb Phil
  8. O'Kaysions clip is magnificent! Still love this. Indecent trouser alert though Reckon that's where the lead singer of Mud got his idea from. It always appalled our mam when they were on TOTP as she maintained "he's not wearing underpants the dirty bugger"

Still got it mate. Some records are worth more than money
  12. As has already been said ... unbelievable turn out! Full of proper nighter goers and loads of lovely folk who were great company all night. Not everything was my bag musically but I didn't expect it to be; that's really not the point though and certainly isn't a gripe. I really enjoyed Stewart and Joan's spots in particular but heard plenty of good dance tackle over the course of the night. Much more importantly, people came from all over the country and the floor was rammed all night which has got to be the ultimate measure of how good or not a nighter is hasn't it? Horses n courses n all that; did what it said on the tin! All I can say is that if you didn't have a good night out last night there's something wrong with you! Thoroughly enjoyed myself and finished-up staying until the end when I had intended to be away by 3. Thanks to all involved for all their hard work in making it happen. (Not just resurrected but back bigger and better than before if last night was anything to go by). Really chuffed for you lads! See you at the next one, and the one after that, and ... atb Phil
