  2. Right On was owned by Bill Downs. I know because Bill used the Right On trading name to licence to me in the 70's mastes to release on Inferno -- New York In The Dark - The Ad Libs You Don't Mean Me No Good - Jelly Beans Come Back - Fantastic Puzzles and Dave was not involved in those deals Bill also acted as middle man for us to buy outright the master to Your Autumn Of Tomorrow - The Crow which had been previously releaseed by DG on UK Right On. Again Dave was not involved in the deal Bill at one stage was very close to Dave Godin. He was aso friendswith Van McCoy and was the DO in the VANDO label. Van was the VAN, We tried to release some Van McCoy masters via Bill, but Van was so busy with his post "Do The Hustle" disco career he did not have the time to deal with it.
  3. Was very impressed to see an acetate off "What's The Use" - Chairmen Of The Board on John Manship Auction site, and very relieved too, as I thought I was going mad... The tape of it was actually played to me at the Holland Brothers office in LA around 1981 and I did a deal on the spot to release it on Inferno. I was visiting their office some time after the release of Invictus recordings by, Chairmen Of The Board, Freda Payne, Just Brothers and Eloise Laws on Inferno, probably went over to pay royalties. Anyway they were very happy with the sales on Inferno and the royalty statements, etc, and the day before I had to fly back, I was taken to a studio to meet Lamont Dozier and Paul Riser and then back to the HB office In Hollywood where a pile of unreleased tracks had been pulled out to listen to. "What's The Use" blew my socks off, I could not believe how good it was, and it was arranged that the next day I would come back to collect a copy of the tape on my way to the airport. The following next morning I met Fred Darian, the guy who with Al DeLory co-wrote "Out Of The Floor" - Dobie Gray and owned the master, and did a deal with him to release that, which was great, but all the time I was thinking about "What's The Use".. Then it was on to the HB office Trouble was the tape waiting for me was not "What's The Use" and due to the filing system no tape called "What's The Use" could be found there and then, or in subsequent weeks when I was back home . The guys at HB said I must have got it wrong, as they could not find anything with that or similair title, and that they had played everything and could not find any song with that hook or anything like it. I was absolutely gutted. Over the years I have wondered if I had somehow got the title wrong, or somehow just imagined the whole thing, as I remember it being so catchy I just couldn't work out why it had not been released as a key single. And now an actetate turns up. Amazing.
  4. James was a wonderful guy, and a great eccentric. He loved restaurants as much as he loved music, and would go miles out of his way when on the way to gigs in order to eat at places he had heard about. He came over as aristocratic and autocratic, but could laugh at himself too, when making the Altern 8 records we asked him if he would mind doing a spoken review of it in his inimitable Record Mirror bpm 131.5 - stuttering, juddering, bass heavy...style which we would include in the recording. To our surprise, he agreed and did it on the spot down the phone to the studio and his inimitable review in posh voice was dubbed at the end of the track which went on to be a hit. In New York at the height of the House Music mania I asked about his DJ career playing Soul in the 60's and he delayed going to some club he was going to where he would have been made a VIP fuss off just so he could talk about that era. He loved Soul, and I think he is the source of the story about Jerry Wexler doing an acetate of "The Sloopy" - Billy Young to be cut by Atlantic in New York and sent over from New York to The Scene or similair club in London. He was the kind of guy who would have had Jerry Wexler's phone number in his contacts book. Bought some of his collection from Mick Smith after he died, things like Hoagy Lands on Stateside demo, but they sadly all had the middles dinked out as James wanted them to look like USA imports. He met a lot of the USA Soul acts when they toured the UK in the 60's.

  7. Doubt very much if it was 1976. We only started wholesaling in August 1976. Ian Dewhirst was my partner then and was based in LA, & all West Coast stuff came via Simon Soussan. At the strart of the next year Ian and myself went our separate ways. I carried on wholesaling and started looking to buy from other sources than Simon.I distinctly remember getting the Highland label info from a Billboard Annual and doing the deal myself, so would have been 1977 earliest. The Wigan plays did not affect me getting the stock...I just loved the record!!!
  8. Like Pete says, middle one is the repress
  9. I will have a look for my broken W/DJ I definitely did the only repress, it was from the LA company who owned the master. I liked the record so much I thought it would be easy to sell 500, actually was really hard to move them. I could have had them done in 1976, but I would have thought later. I have kept some of the old paperwork from those days, so will have a look to see if original invoice is stll there.
  10. No, it's not a cover of Jerry Jackson, that would have been a bit surreal. Is "I Want To Feel I'm Wanted". I typed out wrong info - been long day.

  16. RIP Mr Callier. I had the privilege of promoting his appearance at Trentham Gardens and he was a total gentleman. He was also not easily flustered; I was playing records on the night and announced he would be on stage soon when his road manager said she had left the key for the dressing room in the hotel and would have to go back for it and the show would have to be delayed. This was relayed to me while behind the decks. Exasperated, I left the decks, walked into the adjacent corridor and kicked in the door to the dressing room. Everyone looked stunned - apart from super cool Terry. He just smiled and led everyone into the dressing room, and soon later hit the stage. A true star.
  17. Carl is a top guy. I see him once a week for a drink, and he always comes up with great stories about the past. We are partners in the revival of the HIB label via our deal with Robert Bateman.

  19. I found between 800 and 900 copies on Sassy when I went to Billy Jackson's apartment in New York. Honestly cannot remember how many were demos, but there were more issues than demos. I think Billy had kept hold of most of his manufacturing run, as when he did Gamble/Huff for the release on Gamble, it was on basis that he did not distribute it. Sold them for £3 mail order, advertised in Black Echoes, and wholesaled loads of them @ £1.50. Gary Holyman tells a great story how we used them one night for currency in a game of poker.
  20. In the USA most of the record labels relied on distributors to promote their releases, especially to radio stations. The labels needed to know that if a distributor was given say 100 free "promotional" 45's they would not just flog them - hence "not for sale" promo copies in different colours to the commercial copies.. The distributors were all powerful in the 60's, for instance Robert Bateman relied on his distributor in St. Louis to tell him how many copies of "If It's All The Same To You Babe" - Luther Ingram to keep making to satisfy demand. When the distributor got through 5,000 copies and asked for the same again, Robert told them he wasd a bit concerned about making such a commitment. The distributor said no problem and contacted Jerry Wexler at Atlantic and said the record was breaking out, and that led to Atco picking up disribution rights to the record. I had the thrill of sitting down with the legendary Hy Weiss some in 1989 and he said scams involving demo runs were part and parcel of the Soul Music industry.
  21. Oh no, what terrible news. A lovely man, was a privilege to sit down and listen to him talk, he had a great perspectve on life.

  23. Great post. I only went to New York's Paradise Garage once, and that night (no doubt down to the Mel Cherren/West End connection) Billy did a PA peformance.
  24. Marie and myself were stunned to hear the news. Always had a great laugh with Gary, last time was just a few weeks ago at Steve Woomble and Sean Kierney's birthday party. Sounds a cliche but Gary was so much larger than life I can't believe he is no longer with us. He was always so passionate about the music. A lovely man.
  25. Am pleased to be able to announce that a previously unreleased mix of The Carstairs mighty "It Really Hurts Me Girl" is to be released on Inferno. The first 100 copes will be given away to the first 100 people through the doors at the Manchester Ritz All-Dayer on Sunday September 30. This follows the tradition we had at the Ritz All-Dayers in the 70's of sometimes giving singles away to people as they came through the door. One All-Dayer surprised punters got demos of Jeff Perry & Debbie Taylor on UK Arista. The Carstairs mix is the real thing, it was done in the 70's when "It Really Hurts Me Girl" was recorded and was never released. It is not a re-edit, it is not the Tom Moulton mix released in the 70's on Inferno. Big shout out to Mick Holdsworth for being the Soul detective behind this coup. www.soulvation.biz Thanks, Neil
