The History Of The Early Rare Soul Bootlegs 68 - 73
bri phill replied to dthedrug's topic in Look At Your Box
It was Billy Butler he use to DJ at The Mardi Gras. I seem to think it was TempationWalk he had first late 69(or the first we knew about) I use to send him lists in 69/70 Big local Radio/Tv celebrity now Thos other pressing mentioned earlier on this thread I had done but only LP tracks 20 or 25 of each 4 in total -
I always though this got re released in 1970.because thats when we stopped playing it. It was in big demand from 67 onwards and well known by any half serious soul clubber/collector And I only class myself as a second generation rare soul man

Carl is a top bloke and a top DJ with great taste. We go a long way back and had many dealings in the early days. He's had to deal with serious personal illness recently and it's so good to know he's back behind them decks.

What The Twisted Wheel, give The Soul Scene
bri phill replied to Irish Spinner's topic in All About the SOUL
Great stuff a few correction on the first link Brian Smith was the photographer,Ollie Ollerton DJ'd 67/68 and Rob Bellars never DJ'd he shared a collection with Phil Saxe. For anyone who might be interested. Not read the other stuff but Playlists will always miss a lot of tunes out but will show a great diversity in the early years -
It wasn't that shady just a normal bar etc. I use to work above it in the Corn Exchange. It was open as a normal disco in the 60s and we use to pop in it at lunchtime sometimes (some clubs were open at lunch time them days) On Sundays some of the Wheel allniter crowd use to go there amongst lots of other places. Rowntrees did have other clubs and cafes
-
Rowntrees Sound was ground floor and lower ground floor of the Corn Exchange on the Corporation Street side there's a bar and grill there now.

Sorry Dennis haven't seen the flyer wasn't at the last one just remember Phil telling me that Mr Mojo was bringing Mr Finewine. Brian
-
Not sure what's massive in Europe and not here etc. But over the last few years have heard German,Spanish Belgian ,Italian and Sweedish DJs at events and they've all been pretty good with a lot of rare quality stuff. At the next No way out in November Mr Mojo (top notch)(Germany) and Mr Fine Wine are on should well be worth a visit. Brian

Our office had another branch in Liverpool and I use to go up there on Wednesdays 67/68 and had a few finds up there. I remember a shop in the Kensington district where I found around 5 Major Lance 45's and some other stuff that I can't just think off plus a few other shops that I was lucky in. Brian

Just remembered pretty sure it was the 78 record exchange that was in Cromford Court but moved when The Arndale was built it eventually finished up in Stockport. Ralphs or Spin Inn might have done it later on. I didn't bother going in there in the 70s in fact by then I don't think their was much about. Brian
-
Possibly rare records in Cromford Court before the Arndale was built and it moved, I am talking mid to late 60's. Brian
-
No that wasn't the case at Mazels I use to visit Mazels twice a day and bought hundreds of records of them even full collections never remember one without a middle. I can vaguley rememember somewhere who did have a bar through the middle but it was a thin bar for Uk releases. I hated people who knocked the middles out, I only saw it prelevant on bootlegs like Soul sounds and I was never interested in them anyway. I also had a discotron that played UK a bloody big one to drag around on the bus. Brian

In a nutshell most records get over rated by the peolpe who follow that genre. Either because of The mood when you first heard it (the vibe of the place ,or drugs you happened to be on etc.) sometimes a yearning to hear something new (instead of the same old stuff) and in the case of NS to talk and impress about the same. To still rate them well in no particular order A, one mans poison etc. B,only listen to it when double up for it,C,The rareity of the tune and expectation to hear it D,Memory of first hearing it venue etc.E,Shit taste or just a great tune F,Peer pressure.G,A DJ or seller. I've just come in from a night (booze only)out so I'll leave it at that and see if it makes sense in the morning. Brian

In 1972 got £7 for Stick by me baby of Robert Brady from Wales (so I was reminded a bit ago) Brian
-
Pretty sure Oh my darlin' wasn't a wheel track, I only remember getting it just after The Wheel closed. Temptation Walk/Shotgun and the duck absolute massive tune 1970 at The Wheel and The Cats one of the early big money tunes same with Richard Temple. Baby do the Philly dog a bit played out by 69 mainly a club sound by then,Secret Agents /We go together still played a bit.The Flamingoes was massive until re -release, then that become more of a club sound. The Action stuff like Little Carl Carlton,Dee Dee Sharp,Mine exclusively,I can take care of myself,Same old thing Our love will grow in particular all allniter tunes at The Wheel 68/69 onwards. Brian

Rolling Stones Memory. Soul Related Honest
bri phill replied to slimharpo's topic in All About the SOUL
Dave was a purist and didn't approve of anyone covering black artist. He must have realised beladely how much good they did for them artist. They were the most exciting band to burst onto the scene back in 63 for me. I absolutely loved them until Exile on Main Street and it's been down hill ever since. Was in Hyde Park 69 when they did the free gig just after Brian Jones had died. Whilst down there I managed to pick up some rare soul stuff on the cheap aswell. Brian .
