The Prestatyn Soul Weekender Returns

The Prestatyn Soul Weekender Returns

The Prestatyn Soul Weekender Returns !

Following huge public demand, Pontins have announced the welcome return of the Prestatyn Soul weekender at their largest holiday camp at Prestatyn in North Wales over the weekend of March 8-10th 2013.

Between 2001 and 2011 the weekender was widely acclaimed as the leading event of it's kind and quickly became a national institution for soul devotees from Great Britain and beyond.

Every March, over 2000 like-minded souls made the annual pilgrimage to the North Wales coast the celebrate the best in Northern Soul, Motown, Modern and "crossover" soul as played by many of the UK's top DJs.

Following the last event (the 10th anniversary) in March 2011, the Prestatyn site was taken over by the Britannia group who have now invested heavily in upgrading the accommodation and the entertainment venues.

With thousands of new beds now in situe, as well as new flooring in many apartments plus an additional 80 top of the range "club" apartments available, comfort as well as an untouchable array of great soul music is now guaranteed at Prestatyn.

With "recession -busting" great value pricing set for the re-launch weekender ( prices start from as little as £29 per person for 3 nights self-catering!) demand is set to exceed capacity for this event.

Looking back, in addition to a well-respected list of DJs representing soul clubs from all parts of the UK, what really set Prestatyn apart from the rest was the exclusive live artists they were able to attract - and in March 2013 it will be another jaw-dropping act to savour - The Vibrations!

The 4 man group flying in exclusively to appear at the event and are itching to get on stage and to see Prestatyn rock to 2000+ people singing along to their many dancefloor anthems including" Gonna get along without you" , " ' Cause you're mine" and " Surprise Party for Baby"!

Carl Fisher, lead singer of The Vibrations says about their forthcoming visit :

" I want to take the time to thank in advance all the fans of Northern Soul music and the people of England for making it possible for us to come over and perform for all of you. I remember my first time coming over there in the sixties and how we were made to feel welcome in your country. At that time we were backed by a great band who went on to become "The Moody Blues". We played at The Twisted Wheel and The Cavern Club and many other venues and had a good time. We are looking forward to singing "'Cause you 're mine" , "Shake it up", "Surprise party for baby" and "Ain't nothing but a houseparty" ( which I wrote for my good friend Earl Smith of the Showstoppers), who will also be there with us. It is because of people like you who have kept the music alive and make it possible for us to still be doing what we enjoy. We will see you all in March.

Sincerely, Carl Fisher ( the original lead singer of the Vibrations, The Jay Hawks and The Marathons)"

In addition to an exciting live act that will be sure to pull in a huge audience, there are five separate venues covering classic Northern , Motown and Modern soul as well as specialist sessions for lovers of 70s "crossover" soul, 60s RnB and " Rarest of the rare" All Nighter sounds.

Appointed to select the DJs and schedule the entertainment on site is a man who was very involved with Prestatyn the first time around - John Poole. John says : " To have Prestatyn back is a dream come true. With a site that has undergone a huge refurbishment , a mind-blowing headline act direct from America, and a great DJ line-up to cater for all tastes. Add to that the incredible value accommodation deals that are on offer , and I m certain the hundreds who regularly tell me how much they miss Prestatyn are going to be highly delighted at this great news. Britannia have taken their time, made the right improvements to the accommodation and are determined to retain the best elements of the "old Prestatyn" , but to also make the necessary improvements to ensure that the 2013 weekender experience will be the best one yet".

Britannia's event sales manager Lucas Czarnecki commented: " Due to repeated enquiries and questions from the public it has been decided to resurrect the Prestatyn Northern and Modern soul weekender as it's one of the most iconic and successful events in Pontins 65-year history. After long discussions and many meetings we have compiled a team of experienced, passionate and dedicated consultants as well as a top line up of DJs - people who truly dedicated their lives and careers to establishing and preserving the Northern Soul scene in the UK. We are happy to organise this event again and welcome the UK soul scene back in North Wales. We hope our efforts in restoring Prestatyn's accommodation combined with the great value relaunch pricing and a most exceptional and exclusive American live act will put Prestatyn Soul Weekender on the UK map for years to come"

There are so many who deserve a massive thank you for their contributions that made Prestatyn such a success

and the radio was part of this, this includes all who contributed to Channel 6

It has moved on but I feel sure that the new format will provide a similar result

At least there was no "Old Pals Act" or"Ghost"Djs on my Shift.

You can't disagree with Cunnie's comments....those early ones were the crackers when the Wigleymeister and the Fishmeister were organising and the acts then did get a big intro and Rob did masses to put Prestatyn on the soul map with March and October and I for one, despite liking everybody else too, missed him up there.

That smell in the radio room, however was probably the amount of drunk presenters breaking wind. I once ate a full take away curry in there and the stinky remains were still there 24 hours later and we've had a few good beer sessions that have evolved while doing shows. One thing for sure the radio will be difficult to match however it evolves.....over the years I listened to very witty broadcasts and witnessed great music played and did quite a few shows myself that I loved while pissed, sensible and sober and just hungover and to go away from Colin's and Mark's organisation and Rob's earlier won't have quite the same charm. The spread of music in that dodgy radio room with it's questionable set up was always something that the weekender should have embraced and not tried to alter. I've never understood the desire of people to f*ck around with things that aren't broke and i've experienced enough bosses who put the skids on something by doing so........at Prestatyn it was never about the radio achieving heights, as at the end of the day it gets put out through a low end mono tv in the chalet and not via some impressive digital feed, so it makes even the longest serving most professional presenter not sound his/her best. It was, and still should be, about letting people play music from their hearts whether they have heaps of radio experience or not and make it an extension of the charm and giggles had up there.

It's gonna be difficult to re-capture the laughs of the first ten years but I hope it gets somewhere near.

Thanks phatness, for those words.Whenever I could,I tried to get rid of the Beer Glasses,Takeaway Food Containers etc.-through taking Black Bags up to the Radio Room(in the morning).I was seen one morning brushing the Floor around Hoss and Roger Banks(through the small Camera on the Screen). Those two b*st*rds went out of their way sometimes LOL.The smell you could not get rid of(tried Fresh Air Sprays etc.).

On the 60s side,I tried to vary the Music somewhat, to let Listeners have an idea that it did not need to be the same old, same old. Here I would like to thank all the Presenters who did Shows for me.They actually thought about their Shows, and came up with good ideas. There was some Djs but also a few Collectors as well(including a couple of Lady Presenters). It was not about Radio Professionalism it was about Quality of Music. Not just some Dj turning up playing what he would play on his Set(in the Main Room)-without too much thought.

It was, and still should be, about letting people play music from their hearts whether they have heaps of radio experience or not and make it an extension of the charm and giggles had up there.

Always enjoyed the radio slots whether listening or playing. Heard many a record for the first time too on there. If it became too 'polished' it would certainly lose some of it's charm and draw. If it ain't broke - don't try to fix it would seem the appropriate mantra.

Regards,

Dave

Got to agree the radio station was always good, roger an hoss,s sunday mornin slot was a must listen to .It was a great bonus to the the weekender to have the radio station playing away in the back ground when you were in your chalet.A lot of the time it was far better than some of the music on offer in the venue. No disrespect to any djs intended but as previously stated, some of the radio only jocks worked far harder at there spots than some djin in the venue.

The last couple of years when Hoss couldn't make it I had the honour (!!!!????) of partnering Roger on those breakfast shows, and they truly were mayhem. I remember one Saturday morning we got through 8 cans of bitter each ! and on the Sunday morning I went straight from the niter to do the radio show. Chaos ! But great fun !

I don't know who will be doing those spots this time because I won't be going in March, (I'm DJing in Germany that weekend) and when I spoke to Roger last Saturday he hadn't been booked to DJ either.

Good news that Prestatyn is returning,it's played a pivotal part of our soul calender since it's inception. We hope Prestatyn 2013 we continue with a similar ethos. that is providing soul entertainment to cover all tastes. For all of you who supported our room over the last three years we thank you, to the djs who provided top sounds, our respect always and to the former promoters, thankyou for the opportunity.

We felt the need to clarify that we are not organising the rare room, as several people have contacted us having misunderstood our involvement. We will be there purely to dj, the organisation is in the capable hands of Mr.Poole .

Maria and Carl Willingham.

PRESTATYN SOUL WEEKENDER, MARCH 8 - 10th 2013

MODERN ROOMS DJ LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED !

Following huge interest, the DJ line-ups in both of the Modern Rooms are confirmed as follows:

The Main Room: Bigger, Colin Curtis, Andy Davies, Mick Farrer, Fish, Fitzroy, Jim Hargreaves, Steve Hobbs, Terry Jones, John Kane, Mark Randle, Neil Rushton, Neil Self, Mike Stephens.

The "Crossover" Room: Kev Briscoe, Andy Davies, Sean Hampsey, Ivor Jones, Terry Jones, Steve Plumb, Ady Pountain, Soul Sam, Cliff Steele, Andy "Tats" Taylor, Glyn Thornhill.

The "Queen Vic" - Guest DJs and collectors to be announced.

Modern Room organiser Richard Searling said: "I'm really pleased to have secured the services of this extremely versatile team of DJs who represent not only the spirit of the original Prestatyn, but also the future of the event.

Modern Soul can be broadly defined by smooth, polished productions - great vocal performances with lush arrangements and emotive lyrics. We aim to deliver on that promise. The music on offer in the larger room will range from the uplifting sing-a-long classics through to the cream of today's new and recent releases. Highlighted within the afternoon, evening and night time sessions there will be specialist sets to reflect the important part that both jazz and soulful house styles play within today's contemporary Modern soul scene.

The sessions will be carefully scheduled to cater for both connoisseurs and to feature the "arms in the air" favourites to keep the dancefloor full - fabulous music presented by DJs at the top of their trade.

Meanwhile in the "Crossover room", I'm pleased to announce that I've been working closely with Sean Hampsey to recreate a venue that brings back the much-missed "Tent" vibe from the Cala Gran years.

Our "Cream of Crossover" room will be the place to hear those glorious late 60s early 70s modern soul gems, but also be ready to hear plenty of new "sanctified soul" discoveries to add to your wants list, played by an extremely knowledgeable and passionate team of aficionados.

In addition to these two dedicated Modern rooms, we are also planning several Modern collectors and DJ showcases in the Queen Vic pub during the afternoons. More guest DJs will be invited to play in here and details of the schedule will be announced early next year."
