Sad News - Lynn Davis

Recieved the following sad news from Ady C
Lynn a close friend of many of us on this site and an integral part of the London soul scene died on Wednesday.
Lynn DJed for us at the 100 Club and in the upstairs room at Cleethorpes on several occasions usually appearing as “That Girl Lynn”. She was one of London’s soul scene’s most avid and passionate supporters and was a close friend to many of us.
There is a tribute to Lynn on the 6TS website and a Book of Condolences is available via the following link

final details of the Friday 26 Aug event and latest dmsc news etc
latest updated news can be found here
https://www.soul-source.co.uk/content/view/12393/

Ok everything is 100% solid now with the  upcoming Monkey at the Old Hall Llandudno, after way the last one went ( read review here )and with the line up on offer for this reckon that Friday Aug 26th should be a good one

Latest DMSC news - Once summer out of the way watch out for news on forthcoming dmsc events

monkey @ old hall landudno
friday 26 august
8pm - 2am £ 5 in

venue :
The venue is a large listed 16th century manor hall here, and while on the outside it looks just like that, once inside the building there is a bit of a tardis effect. The dance complex part is purpose made for such an event, dj booth, a unusual floor and layout, all a bit different from the usual but sort of tailor made if know what I mean,

djs:
main guest is Soul Sam, though been at the monkey before,  as this was as a punter, this event is a long over due visit as monkey guest dj.
our other guest is Andy Killock, who last time at monkey proved that he is one of the best "unknown/should be known" djs around with what he pushed out
Along with usual bunch of regular reprobates dishing out a wide varied mic of current floorfillers, rarites, and quality revivals
Ritchie Andrew, Chico, Mark Speakman, Phil Blacknell, Hartley, Steve Thomas , Mike H

sales:
Roger Banks will be attending and bring his sales, plus usual sellers and boxes

Soul Source: Many Thanks to Kolla

Stepping down as moderator

Just like to pass on personal thanks to Kolla who has decided to step down from moderating on Soul Source.
Long time members will be more than aware of the part she has played in making Soul Source what it is over the years. Both on the contributing side and also the rarely seen moderating side.
No doubt that without Kolla's efforts this site would have never grown and developed the way it has. Many a time it was purely down to her calmness and positive thinking  that ensured this site got thru some of the bumpy times we have had along the way.
Many thanks Kolla

Lowton - Lookback at Aug 2005

A Friday night in August saw a long over due trip to Lowton Civic,
dunno what's going on nowadays but feels like doing something wrong if
can't get to an event that always enjoy as often as like. Always enjoy
Lowton, the layout, three rooms, dj policy, record bar, cost and
location all work together with result always have a enjoyable night
there.

The nite was a mini-niter, as in was open till 4am, fairly sure was
told this was the last one open till 4am to be held, which at a guess
is something to do with new licensing laws coming in.... maybe but as
always best bet is to wait for official word. As said this trip to
Lowton was long overdue, and was looking forward to it, sometimes with
events if a bit of a gap between visits then do notice differences, but
everything was as it was last time, turned up to a full car park busy
inside and good buzz, like the layout of lowton cause you're  free
to roam and can do stuff like play tip on high or corridor sprints if
have a need.

Main hall was busy,  not much chance of reading worthwhile
informative reporting here as was after having a most enjoyable nite,
grabbed some alcohol made a trip down corridor to check RnB room
was still RnB-ing and yep it was certainly doing that with some good
sounds as we relaxed down that end of event. Good to catch up with Pete
Coulson.

A early visit to modern room, still warming up and while can
recall every tune pushed out whilst in there just to make sure no
mistakes will add Baz M's highlight list that he posted up here other
day, a nice mix of everyday people made a impression, quite switched on
at this moment as asked Dave L to recommend a good time to get back in
later where will catch a couple of good sessions, he made the effort
and passed on recommendations, I then made a strong mental note of the
timings and after a good dose of what was on offer modern wise moved
on, of course these timings were wiped away when later doing some
bartering, so anyone reading this who can pass on a better view of the
modern room going ons help us out and post up. (sorry bout that but as
said was on a nite out nite)

Record room was as busy as always and lots of vinyl on offer, always a
wide range on offer, bargains, musthaves and so on , lot of catch ups,
and fair bits of info

Here's just some bits, think 100%

Neil Jones gave a heads up on Bury says going strong still packing them
in each month and next weeks one should be yet another  good one.

Point made on night by someone, was how events like Bury and Lowton and
others just crack on with no fuss dishing out what they say they will,
regular soul events with large crowds month in and month out their own
way with no fuss, no politics or no controversy.

Interesting point that and caused some discussion

Roger Banks was flogging his wares along with dj-ing and passed on that
he be bringing his vinyl wares again to the next Monkey at end of month.

Soul Sam was doing the vinyl sales thing and took time to pass on his
current top plays along with a few of his "on the up" plays which be on
site later in monkey section, which of course the next one features Sam
as the main guest making a long overdue appearance at Monkey and an
overdue return to Llandudno. Of course if cant wait till then can catch
him at his own event at Broughton next week.

Guy called Ian from Carlise (apologies if name wrong) asked me to pass
on info about the Castle Soul Club in London on Friday 26th August with
Roger Stewart as guest

8.30-1.30

Main Room was still going strong,  caught Dean Anderson dishing
out his disks Rob Thomas was strutting his stuff, Steve Thomas was
spinning his spins, Andy M and Molly were throwing their tunes John
Poole was pushing his plays

Districts - One lover, Mac Staton & Nomads - There she goes, Alt
version of Upper Hand by Candi Statons dad or uncle, Jimmy Raye -
Philly dog around the world, Kenny Lewis - Not the marrying kind,
Parsiains - Twinkle little star

being  a brief varied grab of sounds from night

Steve had work in morning so left round 3 ish, well as said was a nite
out nite out and as such this lookback is a bit brief on plays and
highlights and heavy on rubbish, so feel free to add if there!

Overall was yet another enjoyable night at Lowton Civic, as said at
beginning its been a while since last visit but to be honest it could
have been last month as everything was as it is always, full credit to
the promoters for last night and the continuity of this event.

Henry Stone Interview

There is a great interview and profile of Henry Stone covering his six decades  in the music business.
Henry Stone has long been known around the world as one of the pioneers of the record industry. After working with vinyl, cassettes and CDs, Henry is now moving into music's digital era with worldwide digital distribution of his product on The Legendary Henry Stone label to all of the most popular digital services in the world.
In his almost six decades in the business, Henry has discovered talents that have sold millions of records and become international stars. He has formed record companies with hits so big and meaningful that they created new categories in music. Henry was born in the Bronx, N.Y. He played the trumpet, and after a stint in the Army he moved to Los Angeles where, in 1946, he started his career by selling records to jukebox operators from the trunk of his car. In 1948 he moved to Miami, Fla. and started to record and distribute the abundance of Miami doo-wop, blues, gospel and R&B artists. Henry says he "wanted to funk up the world," and he started doing just that via his own Chart, Rockin' and Glory...
The interview is by Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen and can be found at https://members.celebrityaccess.com/news/profile.html?id=255

GWP NYC TCB - New release from Kent

Listing and details of the latest cd release from the kent label

When I visited Gerard W Purcell’s New York offices above his Paparazzi restaurant around 1990, I wasn’t really sure why I’d gone there. Though I rated his GWP label highly, there weren’t any big Northern Soul sounds or rarities on it and though Debbie Taylor’s ‘Don’t Let It End’ is one of my all time favourite soul songs, it wasn’t going to move box-loads of CDs.
I knew there was some link with the fabulous 60s soul of Detroit’s Pied Piper Productions, that we had already released on the “Rare Collectable & Soulful” CDs, but apart from shared publishing, it was hard to figure out the exact nature of the relationship. Gerry Purcell himself was amicable enough, though he didn’t seem to know much about the nitty gritty of the recordings that I revered so much. .... continue...>>

Sad News Eugene Record RIP

Couldn't find any mention on the site so thought  I would send this for you to post up in news:

Eugene Record, the leader of the 1970's harmony group the Chi-Lites,
which scored hits with mellifluous soul ballads like "Oh Girl" and
"Have You Seen Her?," died yesterday. He was 64.
Jack Vartoogian/FrontRowRecords, 2000
Eugene Record

The cause was cancer, Jack Bart, the president of the
group's booking agency, told The Associated Press. The place of death
was not announced.

With smooth, yearning vocals and streamlined arrangements, the
Chi-Lites, named after the group's hometown, Chicago, mingled
sentimental street-corner doo-wop with the sounds of Motown and funk to
create a sleek new soul style in the early 70's. "Oh Girl" became a No.
1 hit in 1972, and 11 of the group's songs reached the Top 20 on the
R&B charts from 1969 to 1974.

Mr. Record wrote or helped to write many of the group's most
popular songs and frequently sang the lead as well, in a velvety and
often melancholic tenor. He sometimes sang in a euphoric falsetto, as
he did in "Stoned Out of My Mind," which he wrote with his former wife
and songwriting partner, Barbara Acklin.

Another device favored by Mr. Record was the pensive spoken verse,
which he used in "Have You Seen Her?" and "A Letter to Myself."

The Chi-Lites' biggest hits have remained radio staples for decades,
and the group's songs have frequently been covered by other performers.
In 1990 MC Hammer recorded a popular version of "Have You Seen Her?,"
and in 2003 Beyoncé Knowles's song "Crazy in Love," a blockbuster hit,
sampled the horn fanfare in "Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)," a
Chi-Lites song written by Mr. Record. When "Crazy in Love" won a Grammy
Award for best R&B song, the prize was shared by Mr. Record; Ms.
Knowles; her producer, Rich Harrison; and Shawn Carter, better known as
Jay-Z, who contributed a rap.

The Chi-Lites' origins were in the late-50's doo-wop era. Mr.
Record formed the Chanteurs with Robert Lester and Clarence Johnson,
and released a single in 1959. The next year Creadel Jones and Marshall
Thompson joined them, and the group became the Hi-Lites, changing its
name to the Chi-Lites in 1964.

The group signed with the Brunswick label in 1968, and began to taste
success that year with the song "Give It Away," which reached No. 10 on
the R&B charts. But it was a string of hits in the early 70's that
established the group's reputation. In addition to its breezy and
romantic ballads, the Chi-Lites had a handful of stern political songs,
including "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People," "There Will
Never Be Any Peace (Until God Is Seated at the Conference Table)," both
written by Mr. Record.

Mr. Record left the group in 1976 and released three solo albums on
Warner Brothers. He rejoined the Chi-Lites in 1980, and the group had
two more minor hits on Mr. Record's label, Chi-Sound, "Hot on a Thing
(Called Love)" and "Bottom's Up." The group has continued in various
permutations since the mid-1980's, and Mr. Record performed with it in
"Only the Strong Survive," a 2002 documentary of 1960's and 70's soul
stars that was directed by Chris Hegedus and D. A. Pennebaker.

His survivors include his wife, Jackie.

Bettye LaVette on David Letterman Thursday Night!

Bettye LaVette, who made only one Motown album (TELL ME A LIE) is rightfully a member of the Motown family.  She has been working many years and recording since she was 16 years old.  Bettye was on Lupine Records with the Supremes when they were the Primettes!

Her comeback in 1998, with her concert at New York's prestigeous Columbia University started the ball rolling again (in some people's opinion), others say it was her astonishing performance at the Poretta Music Festival that brought her back.  Whatever it was, things are HAPPENING for the Detroit soul diva.
The reviews from jaded critics all over the world about LaVette's stage performances are astounding.  They haven't talked about ANY singer like this since the emergence of Aretha Franklin.  One critic, after attending both Bettye's show and Chaka Kahn's at Monterey Jazz Fest said: "Miss Kahn could take lessons from Miss LaVette."
At the Chicago Blues Festival, she blew young blues singer, Shemeekia Copeland away, prompting one critic to relate: "Miss LaVette was the surprise hit of the entire festival."
A couple of weeks ago, I saw her in Brooklyn at Prospect Park.  Brooklyn is the toughest crowd in the nation.  At the end of her show, Bettye received a PROLONGED standing ovation.
Watch her tomorrow night, July 28, 2005,  on the Letterman Show and see what the shouting is all about.
