Northern Soul Sydney Australia

"THE OPENING NIGHT" SOUL BISCUITS NORTHERN SOUL CLUB SYDNEY, NSW, AUSTRALIA - 28th JANUARY 2004 I am lugging behind me a box of 100 precious vinyl 45's as I climb the stairs leading to the entrance of Bar Cleveland, the venue for the big opening night of the Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Club in Sydney, NSW, Australia. As the owner and moderator of the Australian Yahoo Group "Northernsoulinoz" and having around 2000 Northern Soul 45's I have been asked to play a couple of sets to help the night along by the event's organiser "Keith "Keefster" Miller. It's 7.30pm and once inside I finally get to meet "Keefster" and his fiancÃÆ’©e Amy, I didnt recognise Keith at first as he has shaven off his beard. There is a little tension in the air, Keefster has been planning this night since he first came to Australia from Scotland several months ago, some said it couldn't be done and now it's the time of reckoning. We are the only three people in the place and are very nervous, is anybody going to turn up? Has all the effort been worth it? Will they like what we have to offer? Oh shit!, this is the moment of truth, this is it!! I look around at the empty venue, it is a great looking place, good sized wooden dance floor, basically three rooms with the bar being the centre of the middle room, with the DJ booth positioned right behind the bar. The place reminded me a little of The Duke of York in Adelaide but with an extra room on the side. I check out the DJ gear, 2 Technics SL1200MK2 turn tables and a three channel Pioneer mixer with one touch cueing. All good so far. We put on the first record to try the sound, its Martha and the Vandellas "No where to run", the haunting lyrics of Martha Reeves echo around the empty rooms, sounds brilliant, 6 large speakers across the three rooms, two not working, find switches on wall, what a fantastic sound, all we need now are people and preferably soul lovers, but right now we'll take anyone! Its 8.00pm the advertised starting time and still only the three of us in the cavernous club, starting to feel lonely and apprehensive, we all look each other in the eye, and without saying anything we all know things are not going the way they were planned. Keefster cranks up the decks and starts to play some tracks, what else can you do? Dave Cutler comes in, four of us now; we talk about old times and old places and hope a few more are on the way to join us. Several people wander in from the stairs and buy drinks, then a few more, followed by Alex White one of the Sydney Soul Sisters, we have a beer at the bar, discuss how its not looking too good, Alex assures us there is a crowd of Sydney Soul regulars on the way and theyd better be here by 9.00pm or shell kill them, somehow I believe her. It's now 8.30pm and things still very quiet, about 10 people and in a place this size thats empty. Keefster is still plugging away on the decks, what else can you do? A few more wander in and then just after 9.00 a good sized contingency of Sydney soul regulars arrive as Alex had promised, well not too bad at least the night wont be a total disaster. Dave Mac and his wife then arrive and at around 9.10 Dave is on the decks spinning some modern. A few more soulies come up the stairs and things are not looking too bad with around 35 in the place. 9.30 pm around 45 in now and a few of the local scooter boys arrive looking the part in their Parkas, we are glad to see them and three of four people are dancing to Daves modern now, the place is filling up nicely with about 50 in, we start to breath a sigh of relief, this could be a reasonable night after all. 9.45 and people pouring up the stairs, where are they coming from? Who cares? Its looking good. Dave has warmed the crowd nicely, about 60 in now and a good friendly atmosphere building, the crack is good and the Sydney Soul scene far better than I expected. More people streaming up the stairs about 80 in now and its time for my first set. I am nervous for a different reason now, not because no-one is in the place, but will they like what I am going to play? I had my set all carefully planned and prepared, now at the last minute I have doubts about it and I am changing my mind, I tell myself too late, your on now son, go to it. It's 10.00pm and time for my first track, its Martha&the Vandellas "No where to run" for the second time of the night, this time with around 85 people listening to it, I am relieved, it goes down well about 10 on the dance floor, well that's OK for a start. Next I play Buddy Sigler "Follow your heart", the big trumpeting intro calls a few more to the dance floor and the place is starting to swing. I stick to a good thing, and follow up with "Run for Cover" - The Dells, "Determination" - Dean Parish and then as the into of JJ Barnes "Please Let me in" swirls around the room the dance floor becomes alive with about 25 on there. We are all feeling good now, Keefster comes into the DJ Booth with the biggest grin I have seen all night, we eagerly shake hands, a fantastic job all-round, the night is better than we could have expected. The crowd are appreciative off the music, I am more relaxed and at last beginning to enjoy the night. I follow up with some of my favourites: "This old heart of mine" - Isley Brothers, "Right Track" - Billy Butler, which is supported by the sharp crack of many hand claps from the dancers, the floor is packed, people have continued to drift in, the place is rammed with about 110 in now, and a few of the Sydneysiders are livening the place up with back drops, spins and other dance floor gymnastics (see photos). Its easy and enjoyable from here on in, just keep the dance floor packed with Northern Soul classics such as "Girl across the street" - Moses Smith, "Let her go" - Otis smith, "Angel Baby" - Daryl Banks, then its Brice Coefields "Aint that right". I follow these with Ace Spectrums "Dont send nobody else", plenty of hand clapping to this one and the crowd are having a great time, even the bar staff are swinging along to it, what an atmosphere, this place is brilliant! Every so often locals enter the DJ booth, they are keen to show their appreciation and also ask for requests, I tell myself this is what Northern Soul is all about. The sounds keep coming and as the intro to "A little togetherness" from the Young Hearts booms around the room, the dance floor is heaving, my two last tracks of this set have come all to soon, slowing things down a little now, but the floor still rocking and clapping to Bobby Paris - "I walked away" and then Timi Yuro - "Itll never be over for me". The place is alive, the dance floor packed, George Coumbis, aka "Agent OO Soul, who is known to have one of the best record collections in Australia enters the DJ booth as he has the 11.00 - 12.00 spot, a soulful handshake and George is at the decks, a brilliant start with "You shoulda held on" from the 7th Avenue Aviators and then "Strange Change" - Herb Ward and "I can't help myself" - The Volumes, the dance floor is alive, the bar sales are brisk and the Sydney Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Club is in full swing. Plenty more great tracks follow from George, he keeps the dance floor busy for his whole set and finishes with "We're acting like lovers" - The Spellbinders and then "Call on me" from the Dynells, great set George, the crowd loved it, Agent OO Soul hands over the decks to Keefster, its another soulful handshake and smiles all around, the Sydney soul scene has been kind to us, they have turned up to support the opening night of Soul Biscuits in droves, all credit to them, a great bunch of people are the Sydneysiders and how they love their Northern Soul. Its Keefster on the decks now, the whole Soul Biscuits Club was his idea and as the clock ticks midnight he has the place jumping and is in fine form. He starts with some old favourites, Jay&the Techniques - "Make your own sweet music", "Working on a building of love" - Chairmen of the Board and then Patty and the Emblems - "Mixed up shook up little girl". Its Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon - "Breaking down the walls", then the Temptations with "Aint too proud to beg", and then perhaps the bravest play of the night and one of the most successful with Keefster playing "Under my thumb" - Wayne Gibson, the crowd love it and even sing along, the dance floor stays packed all through Keefster's set, no Happy Lappy now, just pure vinyl magic, what a night for Northern Soul. After Keiths amazing set the Bar Manager pulls him aside, and says great job, good crowd, big bar takings, come and see me next week Keith, we need to talk about a regular gig. I am then back on the decks for the last set 1.00 - 2.00pm, again plenty of dance floor action and a good number stay till the very end, including Sydney Soul Sister Alex White who helps with some words of encouragement and advice regarding the next gig. The die hards didnt want to go home and wanted more at 2.00am the official closing time. I am able to squeeze in 4 more before being asked politely by security to call it a night, and what a night, it was suddenly all over, the feeling was one of relief combined with great happiness, the night had worked, the venue was good, the music was brilliant, the sound system and equipment made it all sound great and best of all the Sydney crowd had turned up in style to support the opening night. On behalf of Keefster and myself, we THANK YOU SYDNEY, 120 people came on a mid-week night, you are a great bunch of soulies, thank you for making us welcome, it is very much appreciated and yes, we WILL be back. THANK YOU SYDNEY and thank you KEEFSTER you made it happen. Regards Steve Bardsley PS The next Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Night has been confirmed for the 25th February 2004, same place, same DJ's.

Twilight time - joe w

a great piece by joe w
some of the younger folk might know the platters only from their reincarnation as a soul act in the mid-60s, "with this ring" and "washed ashore" and all that, but the platters were, twilight time of course, a monster group in the 50s--remember "the great pretender"?
they had four number one songs and 16 gold records in five years. tony williams, the lead singer until 1960, had a magical and powerful voice rivaled in the 50s only by roy orbisons and even in the early 60s when i became a teenager, the platters ballads were still huge--"smoke gets in your eyes" followed by "harbor lights" was all you needed to get a girl wet. so when my good buddy john miller, who owns a record store called the record museum, phoned me up one evening in, oh, about 1986 or so, i cant remember exactly when, and told me the platters were playing that night at the holiday inn on the beach--the real platters, the tony williams platters--i dropped everything (what, a tuna fish sandwich and a bottle of beer) and got in his van and headed out to collins avenue and 87th street on miami beach. on the way, we listened to platters tapes--"heaven on earth, "my prayer"--and sped across the causeway, worried the whole time wed be late, locked out, and shit out of luck. when we got there, we could hear the platters already singing, the band finishing up "i love you 1000 times." we jogged, didnt want to miss a note of tony williams. when we got there we saw . . .
jesus h, when we got there we saw a small diningroom with the lights fully on, a tiny venue more suited to a stand-up comedian than a singing group. up on stage to the left, by himself, stood tony williams suited up in a tux, looking lonely; the group--i think most of them were his family--stood way to the right of the stage. the place was empty, absofuckinglutely empty. empty, that is, except for one table around which a dozen or so cubans were celebrating somebodys birthday. while the platters sang, they cackled and cockledoodled, a bunch of cocolocos who couldnt care less about this old negrito struggling up on stage. and tony was struggling. the band launched into "twilight time" and his voice, the one that used to swing from chandeliers and leap over tall buildings, cracked and creaked at every high note. he sounded like he was strangling in his own vomit. at the finale of the song his voice choked and simply crapped out on him. from the back of the clubroom,
where john and i stood, you could see the frustration and embarrassment in his face, his lips pursed in self-disgust. he coughed into his fist and lamely said, "oh man, must a been somethin i ate. man, the food at this place, ha ha ha." he was swaying on his feet, he was drunk. he tried one more tune and quit half way through, waving a weak hand at the group. then one of the group--i think he introduced himself as tonys son--took over the lead while tony snapped his fingers in time to the music and rocked on his heels, his head down.
i wondered what it must be like to have been tony williams--the great tony williams, "the magic touch," "one in a million," "only you"--to have been a glorious star only to find yourself one evening late in your career standing on stage looking out at a tiny clubroom with garish lights that contained only a table full of cucarachas with their backs turned to you, treating you like the shoeshine boy, and two shadows in the back of the room who soon slid back into the night, out of respect for your memory, having seen the saddest thing they had ever seen.

Barbara Lynn Story

The Barbara Lynn Story
Written by Dave Rimmer the DJ and editor of Soulful Kinda Music, where article such as this are the norm (see fanzine section for ordering info)

For somebody born in Texas (Beaumont, January 16 1942) Barbara Lynn Ozen's recording career was very cosmopolitan. Her first recordings were done in New Orleans for a Philadelphia based label, then for a New Orleans label, then for a New York label in Mississippi and Alabama. And that was just the Sixties!
So let's go back to the early days in Beaumont, Texas. Unlike many singers, Barbara Lynn didn't get her start through the church. It was the Texas Blues singers, and Elvis Presley who inspired her. She started learning piano at school, but soon tired of the instrument, so her mother bought her a ukulele. Once she had proved that she could play it, despite being left handed, a proper guitar was purchased for Barbara.
Throughout her teens, Barbara wrote poetry prolifically, it was when she started to put the words to music that she began to perform.
By 1960 she was in New Orleans, singing backing tracks at Goldband Records and performing in local clubs with her band, Bobbie Lynn and The Idols. The group performed cover versions of current pop (Rock & Roll) hits, R & B covers, and at least one of Barbara's poems that she had composed some music for, 'You'll Lose A Good Thing'.
There are several stones about how Barbara was discovered, but the one that appears most frequently, and is supported by Barbara herself, was that she was performing at a club called Lou Arm's in New Orleans when well known producer Huey P Meaux was told to catch the show and give her a listen.
He duly went, saw her perform 'You'll Lose A Good Thing' and decided he wanted to record her. Huey was at this time a regular producer at Cosimo Matassa's recording studio at 521 Governer Nichols Street in New Orleans. He regularly took artists like Joe Barry, Leroy Martin, Rod Bernard and Jimmy Adams into the studio to record. So this is where he took Barbara to record her debut track. It could of course have been the fact that Cosimo let Huey use the facilities on credit rather than money up front which influenced his choice! Either way, within a few days the song was recorded, and several acetates were distributed to radio stations.
Almost immediately Jamie Records in Philadelphia showed interest and promptly signed Barbara to a three-year contract. The song was released as Jamie 1220 with 'Lonely Heartaches' as the flip. It proved to be a huge hit single reaching # 1 on the R & B chart and #8 on the Billboard Pop charts.
Nobody could have anticipated such a huge national hit with a debut single, and there wasn't a follow up single ready. However, on the strength of the hit Barbara went on tour. She eventually covered 43 states and appeared on Dick Clarke's Bandstand TV programme (Which was recorded in Philadelphia) twice.
By the end of the year another two singles had been released and an album recorded. The album included the tracks 'Dina And Patrina', (Although I've seen it listed as 'Dina And Petriria', and even 'Dina And Katriria') and 'Give Me A Break'. The reason I mention this is that the two tracks appear to have been released as a single on Eric, prior to the Jamie deal. Although I've never seen the single Barbara herself does give credence to its existence in an interview with Alan Govenar in 'Meeting The Blues: The Rise Of Texas Music’. Barbara was back in the charts in January 1963 with her third single for Jamie, 'You're Gonna Need Me I I'm Sorry I Met You' Jamie 1240. According to the Billboard chart this was Barbara's only hit that year. However, the Cashbox charts show hits with 'Don't Be Cruel / You Can't Be Satisfied' Jamie 1244, and 'I Cried At Laura's Wedding / You Better Stop' Jamie 1260.
By 1964, Billboard had stopped producing an R & B chart, merging Black artists in with the Hot 100 Pop songs. This caused many problems in terms of recognition for black artists for two reasons: 1964 was the year the Beatles hit the States big time, along with all the other UK groups. So many great singles would have sold many thousands of copies, but never got a chart entry.
Barbara hit the Hot 100 twice in 1964 with 'Oh! Baby (We Got A Good Thing Going / Unfair' Jamie 1286 and 'Let Her Knock Herself Out / Don't Spread It Around' Jamie 1292. This single was significant because it was not recorded in New Orleans. It was actually recorded in Houston at the ACA Studios owned by Bill Holford-
In 1965 Barbara recorded another album. It was not issued until 1997 when Bear family put out the 'Promises' CD. Whilst the tracks were all studio recordings an audience was dubbed over the top to give a, disappointing, live sound
Four singles were also released in 1965, none of them became big hits for Barbara and her contract with Janue was not renewed-
Huey Meaux still had confidence in her though, so 1966 saw her first release on Huey's own Tribe label. The first release 'I'm A Good Woman / Running Back' Tribe 8316 failed to chart, but the second, the original version of 'You Left The Water Running' Tribe 8319 reached #43 on the R & B charts in October 1966. Two further singles on the label in 1967 failed to chart but Huey Meaux had, as her manager, managed to get a contract with Atlantic Records.
The first tracks for the label were recorded at the Grits and Gravy studio in Clinton Mississippi in September 1967. They weren't released until February 1968 and took Barbara back into the charts. 'This Is The Thanks I Got/Ring Telephone Ring' Atlantic 2450 reached #39 on the Billboard R+B charts. And 65 in the pop charts. It was to prove Barbara's last pop hit.
The recording career becomes slightly confusing now. Certainly several tracks were recorded in 1968 (including four at the fame studios in Muscle Shoals and three singles (Atlantic 2513, 2553, and 2585) were released, but none of them charted. There was also a superb album 'Here Is Barbara Lynn' Atlantic 8171. There is then a 3-year gap when it appears that Barbara did no recording at all for the label. I can find no explanation for this, and neither Jerry Wexler in his book, or Charlie Gillett in his history of Atlantic Records makes any mention of Barbara Lynn at all.
Atlantic certainly had tracks in the can though because in 1971 'Until Then I'll Suffer/ Take Your Love And Run' Atlantic 2812 was released. It proved to be a big hit on the R & B chart (Although it didn't reach the Pop chart). It was Barbara's best showing on the charts for Atlantic so a further three singles were released over the next two years. One, 'I'm A One Man Woman / Nice And Easy' Atlantic 2853 was another '68 recording, with the last two being '72 and '73 recordings respectively.
Her ties with the label were finally severed in late 1973 and she set about touring the Southern States on a regular basis. A one off single on the Copyright label was recorded in 1974, followed by another on Starflite in 1975.
A longer contract was signed with Jetstream Records in 1976. The first of two singles being a re-recording of 'Until Then I'll Suffer' Jetstream 804. The second was 'Movin' On A Groove' Jetstream, 829 which is currently enjoying popularity on the rare Soul scene. Neither single charted, and they proved to be Barbara’s last recordings for three years
1979 saw another one off single for Love Records 'Mellow Feeling Parts 1 & 2' Love 111, followed by a break until 1983 when 'I'm still the same" was released on Jamstone Records.
The touring had continued though out the years and 1984 saw Barbara tour Japan for the first time. A live album was released in Japan. Unfortunate I’ve been unable to trace any details of the label or the track listing.
1988 saw the release in Holland of the Good Times Album, which contained ten Jamie tracks, two tribe, three Atlantic and one side of the copyright single. This year also saw a new contract and the release of the superb single " Trying To Love Two/Sugar Ciated Love" Ichiban 88-142 and the album entitled "You Don’t Have To go"
There was then a 6-year gap in releases (Although I suspect that there were a couple of Blues tracks done on the Antones label during this period on compilation albums. Until 1994 when Bullseye Blues released a new album recorded with a full backing band containing such notables as The Memphis Horns and David T Walker.
The last new recordings by Barbara were released in 1996 by ITP as an album on which Barbara recorded (Again) many of her own hits and covered songs by artists like The Marvelettes and Betty Wright.
Several retrospective CDs have been released in the 90s most notably by Ichoban (covering the Atlantic tracks) and by Jamie themselves and the Bear family release of last year.
So that brings the story up to date and I can only add that the consistency or all her recordings, real Soul tinged with Texas Blues, makes Barbara Lynn a real star of Soul music who never really got any recognition outside of specialist circles after her big hit in1962.
Apparently she is now living in Los Angeles, a grandmother, content with life and no regrets over her career.
As always in doing articles like this, without direct access to the artist the material is sourced from a variety of places. This time I like to give credit to a following people:
David Nathan for his sleeve notes on the Ichiban CD
Jeff Hanunusch for his sleeve notes on "Promises" CD.
David Cole for the article in issue 4 of "In The Basement."

The Little Henry cover up hes playing is even better. It is in the list under its proper artist/title, although the artist is spelt wrong :-)

I am told that it came via Mr Anderson, passing the rather large 4 figures sum heading into his bank account in payment on the way, thus making 3 copies of said tune.

By the way that makes copy No 5 - Butch, Mick S&Mick H, Dave Welding and Steve Gaunori both have it as well. Sadly us mere mortals will have to be content with trying to mug them for it or praying to the God that is Mr Anderson that he may be able to secure the rights to it for a Grapevine release.

can not see it coming out on grapevine for a number of years yet.
as all known djs with it have it coverd up.very top secret wouid you say.from what ive heard they have all payed four figure sums for it dont think they wouid be happy chappys if john anderson released it on grapevine.so i think this is going to remain mystery for a number of years.also john manship has put a £££ large bounty on it for any infomation leading to its known identity.couid it be another little ann?

I think we can say that Grapevine wont be releasing, if at all, for many years sadly. Is it an unissued acetate? Who knows, but I did hear rumour some time ago that Mr Anderson was trying to secure the rights to an unissued UK LP by someone well known that fell through so it may be that if it is unreleased. Questions, always questions!!!! Mind you, at the next Plinston both Mick Smith and Butch can spin it at the same time in both rooms, that should really p*** us all off and rub salt in the wounds!!!! It is still a great record and one I belivie that Mick S spun first a good few years back so hats off to him for such a quality tune. Another for the Southern Soul Fraternity!!!

Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u
Correction - I have been told by my all-seeing Guru Taff that it was Dave Welding, then Butch then Mick then Steve who got the said record in that order - so a slap on the wrist for me, and a slap around the head for the smug Taff!!!!! Oh and he knows, because hes been told, the story behind the 45 I belive. As for John Manship willing to part with £££s for any info on its real identity I think his moneys safe because at 4 figures for one you can bet that said 5 DJs/Collectors will not be rushing to phone him to screw themselves!!!! Has anyone checked with Im back; Im gone;Im back; Im gone etc etc Levine to make sure he hasnt got boxes of this rare gem stashed away, like his other rare items: 4 Vandells and so on??? Anyway, thats the fun of collecting :-)

* Funny how this tune has been spun at the 100 and Cleethorpes for a good few years and not a whisper - now, BANG! Any reason for this or has the North just caught up with it????

Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u why???
Just a quick thought....why is it still covered up??? I mean if 5 People/DJs have the record then whats the point? It must be the big ego thing again kicking in...... LOL

The flip side is a great track as well by the way.

Uncover the bloody record someone and let the world know who the real artist of this master piece is. Cover up! Cover off more like.

Greg

Oh dear oh dear oh dear! You two really are lacking in the Manship offering stakes - I have this moment just offered a moggie Sharonette and a minor copy on Black Magic (of Rick Astleys version of I Go To Pieces) to Dave who is understandably quite excited about the offer - I do have in reserve the picture of you Taffy with the nightdress (!!!) which he seems to be VERY excited about. Keep ya posted. :-)

Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u why???
Oh come on boys surely someone can offer an original Take That
(on english) and talking about photos BigO i can go one better i have a picture of Taff, Dave and a sheep called Bobby Mutton at Cleethorpes! still i am glad you realise my first post was being ironic, its all quite funny Dave has been playing this record for a few years now (along with mick&later butch) and getting a good response so to me this is all abit like delayed shock!!! but one thing i can tell you all is that it is a real record on a real label and not an acetate and yes Greg one thing we agree on, the flip side is brilliant...........Louise XX

Your first post was being ironic :-O Damm! Got that wrong and have to call Dave fast!!!!! I agree with Dave and Taffy Lousie - your flip side is brilliant (or have I misread things again ????)

The record is great but having just checked out Manships Rarest Of The Rare section on his site I can tell you that there are other equally as good 7Ts movers waiting to be given an airing.

The New Manchester Niter UPDATE*

New Manchester Allnighter - New Century House Saturday December 6th - Update.............Simply wow!!!! what a venue. So far the promotion of The New Century Soul Club first Northern Soul Allnighter on December 6th at The New Century House - CIS building is really going well, the pre buzz for this event is awesome and of course Im gonna big it up and support the efforts of Co promoters Mr Chris Waterman and Lee Crank because so far the whole operation has been conducted with passion, commitment and style from the flyers, posters and nationwide advertising everything is now in place to build the venue as a major regular monthly event which will run on the last Saturday every month throughout 2004. So what of the venue, well Ive been on the scene for some twenty seven years and I can honestly say that I have never seen a better venue for a Northern gig to be hosted in, this place has it all in a word its an AWESOME room which took my breath away when I finally got to see it a few days ago, first class in every avenue with a superb bar area taylor made for a nice drink, a bite to eat and the selling of records. The main room is just outstanding and when the room is dressed and sound system which will be state of the art is in place on December the 6th this will be without question the place to be. The venue very much confirms the club name New Century as it will present a quality Allnighter which the scene warrents in this day and age. There will also be a pre bar venue hosted by Steve Cato at Atlas Bar on Deansgate, Manchester from about 8pm where several DJs will be in place to offer a relaxed warm up to the big one just down the road and you will be able to secure an advanced ticket to save any messing about later- admission to Atlas will be free of charge and a nice way to start the night off. For further information and tickets for the New Century Allnighter you can contact Chris on 07989 415991 or Lee on 07973 864256 or info@goodtymes.co.uk Admission is £10.00 advance or £12.00 on the door, being that this is going to be a very busy event it may be an idea to secure tickets asap. The wow factor is going to come in with everyone who attends Im sure, we want to build a quality event for Soul fans run by Soul fans its that simple and trust me this is without question one of the best venues Ive ever seen and I hope that people will enjoy and treasure the opening night on December 6th and soon enough the word and reputation will spread nationwide. There are plans to add a second room from January 31st in which direction, music policy has yet to be finalised but we will be inviting many of the scenes top spinners to play the venue and may well invite other clubs to host a session in the second room, one such idea is to get all the London Clubs up, i.e Dome Capitol Soul, These Old Shoes, 100 Club, Scenesville etc. So there are many good things and ideas we can put into practice which can only be good for the scene. So New Century is very much based on a people thing and making it work for the people who pay their money so any ideas for future events will very much be taken on board. Im very proud and honoured to have been asked to become resident DJ being as this is very possibly one of the biggest events to happen in Manchester for many years and will sport the corner for this event as I do for all venues I work at be it through my radio show on Solar, word of mouth via the pages of Soul source or whatever its so important for the future of our scene that all venues are supported be it the small basement club or major venue such as this. What we have to remember is that NO ONE is bigger than this scene of ours and the most important single thing is the music and keeping it fresh and alive. What I do know is this venue will certainly try to move forward and keep it real, alive and fresh so we can all enjoy the future. Finally there a several people to thank so far for all their wonderful support in the promotion of this event so far which include - Debbie Troops at BBC on line, Mike Ritson and Stuart Russell at Manifestio, Tim Brown at Anglo American, Carl Webster Lewis and Tony Monson at Solar Radio, All at Soul Source, Blues and Soul, Echoes for their superb coverage, the likes of Steve Cato, Garry Cope, Carl Rhodes, Steve Thomas, Carl Willingham, Kev Murphy, Kiddo, Dave Evison, Brian Rae, Paul Kidd - The DJs for spreading the word, Ian Obeng at Night Owl radio 96.9 FM, On The Scene gig guide, Russ Winstanley at BBC GMR, Jazz FM 100.4, local and national press, all the venues who allowed flyers to be displayed at their gigs and you the people I hope for your support on the first night and in the future. See you all on December 6th, even if you turn up late perhaps after attending another gig in the area you will all be more than welcome. Keep It Real - Mark Bicknell. Thank You Straight Back At Ya! Mark, I am taking this opportunity to thank you too. THANK YOU. There you go , done it. May I also just say that Chris and Myself cannot tell you how much we appreciate the hard graft that everone involved has put in?, from the bottom of our hearts we truely appreciate how much you guys have worked your knackers off in helping us to make this a night to remember( i know a song about that!). We kick of our regular allnighter in 2004 at the end of January which is also going to be somethiong special, i cant go in to too much detail as to why but you will all have to listen to Mark on sundays Big Daddys Soul Shack as to find out why! ?, we will announce the DJ line ups and something that will simply make Januarys night as succesful as our Decembers night looks it going to be. May I thank all the people that Chris and I have spoke to at the events around the country showing us fantastic support for the night, and all the fellow Nortern promoters that have allowed us in the clubs to help promote our own. You are all welcome to do exactly the same at our events, this goes without saying. We have already sold hundreds of tickets which is fantastic and thankyou to everyone that has bought, Chris and I will endeavour to make this a fantastic night for you all and this goes to every one that will come down. it gunna be fantastic for the love of the scene. sorry for any spelling mistakes and poor grammar, this is what Ashton-Under-Lyne has done for me! only jokin I love Ashton. See you all on 6th December. ps. keep hold of your tickets after the events because you will need them throughout the year of 2004 to get special discounts and offers for later events. THANK YOU. Lee.

A quick reply from Mark B

Just a quick reply to the person I seem to have offended with my recent top twenty listed on Soul source, I respect your comments and in no way wash I being flash with my brief comment after each record it was basically to inform, spread and share a little background for people interested in collecting and is a similar thing to what I often do in other publications when reviewing records as often the first question any collector asks is how much does a record sell for......... Im proud to to mentioned in the same breath as Mr Ian Levine as despite what some people think of him his contribution and discovery of records over the years has been awesome and has to be respected. I have no axe to grind with anyone on this scene but I will shoot from the hip and pass comment if I feel strongly about a particular subject or topic but will always put my name to it so this mystrey person has or thinks he has the upper hand but the truth is any comment unsigned has no credability at all. Thanks to Mike H. Ian Cunliffe and The Big O for their kind comments and support, and at the end of the day it was only a top twenty from a guy who likes to play a few records....... and a couple of price tags were mentioned like I say as a guide nothing more. Perhaps it would be better for us all to share information rather than have a pop every five minutes and like Ive said before those who often shout the loudest basically have fuck all to say. And NO the new Manchester Allnighter will not be used as a plattform to brag about record prices or big egos it will simply be about a good night and nothing more......see you on December 6th. Keep It Real - Mark Bicknell.

Finally from a personal level I would like to thank Chris Waterman and Lee Crank for having the faith in me as their resident DJ and basically trusting my judgement and contacts in suggesting and booking all the future DJs from January onwards, these guys have put a lot on the line here, the event has been promoted with dedication, passion and commitment, the leg work alone has seen both of them at numerous events nationwide over the past several weeks, thousands of flyers, national advertising, every effort has been made to make this superb event work, all the DJs including myself will give it 110% and more on the night to make it an enjoyable, entertaining night of quality Northern Soul. The foundations are there, everything is in place to take the scene to another level and with your help THE NEW CENTURY SOUL CLUB will take us all there!!!!!!! New Century First Nite

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a brilliant first night at The New Century House in Manchester on Saturday, still not done the final count but we had well over 600/700 people ther which made for a fantastic night, all the DJs did a fantastic job and we thank them for that from the bottom of our hearts......
Lee and Chris were perfect hosts and they are so pleased with the already superb feedback from many of you , it was simply wonderful. This has the makings of a legendary venue in all the traditions that are so important, everything was bang on from sound system through to just a wonderul electric vibe that made the night for me, so many people have pulled together to make this event work, respect to everyone for the loyal and dedicted support and we look forward to making your night bigger and better in the future with the next date being Satuday January 31st 2004.
The Soul scene is about giving and sharing the passion so we hope that all future NCSC events develop into something really special, our scene is about the people and this wonderful music of ours and to enjoy it in the best possible way, its with this in mind that Chris, Lee, Gary and myself believe that if we listen to what the people want then we can share and work the venue together, Many top name DJs have been booked for future events and some have declined due to other commitments but in time we hope to play all the top guys and girls so the across the board music policy will continue to grow.
There will be a second room from January 31st which will give us more scope to develop and bring in other DJs. Lastly, I am so proud of Lee and Chris for their friendship and trust in me to look after the DJ side of things, and I was so proud to be a part of this wonderful new event which was a huge success basically down to the dedicated support of so many people, we hope the night was enjoyed by you all and look forward to future events in Manchester at very possibly one of the best venues in the country.
Keep It Real - Mark Bicknell.

2004 Here We Go......Its Gonna Be A Soulful Blast.

2004 Here We Go......Its Gonna Be A Soulful Blast. Here we are only a few days into the new year and it already promises to be another fantastic year for the UK Rare/Northern Soul scene with some mouthwatering events to look forward to. DJ bookings are coming my way thick and fast which is still a major passion of mine to play a few tunes at the gigs. Looking forward to playing THE BURY SOUL NIGHTS for Neil Jones and Jayne Malone on a more regular basis this year infact the first session there happens on Friday January 16th 2004 infact this event always runs on the third Friday of the month in two fantastic rooms. The pre buzz for the second NEW CENTURY SOUL CLUB ALLNIGHTER IN MANCHESTER on Saturday 31st January is all so very strong, with well over 700 people attending the first Allnighter back on December 6th last year this venue is without question going to be one of the major venues in the country this year. Great news that Ady Croasdell will be playing a set in the main room as hes in town to promote the new Kent cd Once Upon A Time In Wigan due for release in time for the national tour of Paul Sadots wonderful play of the same name. Other DJs set to appear include, TIM BROWN, ROBBO, DAVE RIMMER, MICK H, GARY COPE, JO WALLACE, KIDDO, MARK BICKNELL in room one, plus an extra special Wigan room featuring DAVE EVISON, STEVE WHITTLE, BRIAN RAE AND RUSS WINSTANLEY. Which is to celebrate the final night of the Manchester run of the play. The venue has had some wonderful feedback from everyone who attended the first night and we all feel things can only get bigger and better this year. Full details can be found on the flyer section of Soulsource with further updates here leading up to January 31st. Im really looking forward to the huge Midnight Hour weekender in March as this promises to be one of the leading venues anywhere in the UK this year, well over 2,000 people booked already and its still a couple of months off so I suggest you book now as Im sure this one is going to sell out prior to the event, again you can find full details here on Soulsource....see you in North Wales! My Solar Radio Show has now been moved to a new time slot which goes out on Friday nights between midnight and 2am instead of the 8am Sunday morning slot, same quality madness from me playing all the very best in Northern Soul and more, its on Channel 879 On SKY DIGITAL and www.solarradio.com For any requests, mentions, dedications you can send an email to studio@solarradio.com A big thank you to everyone who has supported the show over the past three years and for the hundreds of emails recieved, it really makes the whole deal worth it when you know there are a few people out there tuning in. RECORD WANTED - HELP! Mick H recently guested at THE LIME STREET CLUB in Manchester back on December 27th and basically blew everyone away, the mans taste in music is simply first class and Mick is going to be yet again one of the top men on the scene this year. Hes playing a record by STORMY WINTERS - LIFE SAVER ON MERCURY which totally floored me let me tell you, I think Ive heard it way back a couple of times possibly played by Butch but this has to be located and included in my DJ box at whatever cost, already got a couple of contacts onto this one but if anyone can ease the pain please get in touch with me......cash waiting! Please note the the LIME STREET SOUL NIGHTS HAVE NOW MOVED FROM THE LAST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH TO THE LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH with the next one being there on FRIDAY JANUARY 30TH with all the regular DJs plus special guest Chris Churm. The scene has it all right now, loads of top quality events to attend, a real dedicated bunch of hard working DJs out there playing all the top tunes, sure venues are going to clash from time to time but the scene is in such good shape with possibly more people attending venues than ever before even with the odd clash Im sure all venues will do well throughout 2004. Nationwide it could not be better, long may it continue, grow bigger and last for many years to come. Keep It Real - Happy New Year - Mark Bicknell. My Mistake - I Take It All A Bit Too Serious Sometimes. Totally cool now and glad the bootleg feature is now closed, it got a bit heated with myself and another chap and all a bit personal, i cant believe this topic had over 1000 hits and seems to be a very heart felt subject. I said that i cant be bothered anymore regarding posts on Soulsource but really meant on that particular topic, sorry to that person again if i was rude, costic or even hostile towards his comments but we will have to agree to disagree on this one fellow. Collectors just take it all to heart when their passion is messed about with , best we just enjoy our Soul the best way we can within our budgets and i promise not to go near the bootleg issue again well not on Soulsource anyway. I really had no idea that you valued my contribution to this website so much and for that reason i can not let Mike H or everyone else down and will continue to submit copy if you want me to that is. Mark never mind all those idiots who have a pop under the name guest, they havent got the bottle to sign their views. I let people a few months back get to me but no more, I might not be involved with the scene as i useed to be but im still collecting records and love going into soul source everyday and reading new stuff. keep it real and keep up the good work with your articles. By the way that Stormy Wynters track has been round for years on a tape from Bill Nadolney (american record dealer). He sent a sales tape out to loads of uk collectors back in the mid 9ts and this was the first track on the tape. A few people got upset when i&others verbally uncovered it after hearing butch had it c/up LOL but hey then Mick H went out and got one a few weeks later. Its hard but will turn up in time....its not like its on a rare label. I got offer one myself by a dealer in the states but too much wanted and i think andy dyson has one as he played it at notts union. unless everyone is selling the same copy then this is not the case. rest easy greg Guest Posted: 2004/1/13 0:19 Updated: 2004/1/13 0:19 Re: heads up and onwards&upwards Hi Greg, forgot about Andys oops!!! I did say I only knew about Mick Hs (Butchs copy) and Tims. Didnt know about your mates or the one youve been offered. Like you said they will turn up but personally dont think many will. The more the better IMO as more folk then get to hear it.... though hope it doesnt get hammered. So that make six copies then known about????

FROBISHER SUITE - 28 FEBRUARY 2004

FROBISHER SUITE - 28 FEBRUARY 2004 A cold and snowy night in Yorkshire, compounded the soul night promoter's nightmare - how many events clash with us tonight? Well, the answer to that question tonight was - many: New Century nighter, Stoke Togetherness nighter, a charity do in York, the list went on and on. Will anybody venture out because of the weather? Will they be saving themselves for next week's Prestatyn Weekender? Will anybody come through the door tonight? Questions, questions. Yes, numbers were a bit down on normal, but with guests MICK H and DEREK ALLEN, the Trent Soul contingent, joining residents DAVE BOX and FRED WARD, the quality of the sets guaranteed a full across the board mix. Dave kicked off the warm-up spot, 8 til 9, and as usual gave an airing to some soulful mid-tempo gems from his collection, many played for the first time at the venue. Dee Dee Warwick - We've Got Everything Going on Mercury; Fresh Flavour's - Without You Baby on Buddah; Patti Jo - Stay Away From Me on Scepter; Al Williams - The Other Side Of Your Love on Crajon; Denice Chandler - Mama, I Wish I'd Stayed At Home on Lock; Sonny Fisher - Oh Love, This Is Sonny on Tousea; Ralph Graham - What Am I To Do on RCA; Gene Chandler - Without You Here on Curtom; Tony Diamond - You Mean Everything To Me on Capitol; The Four Tops - Are You Man Enough on ABC Dunhill. Fred followed with his first set of the night, featuring classic oldies, as the crowd steadily built up. Mel Britt - She'll Come Running Back; Roger Collins - She's looking Good; Larry Laster - Go For Yourself; Bok to Bach - Father's Angels; Ethics - Look At Me Now; Saxie Russell - Psychedelic Soul; Edwin Starr - Back Street; Soul Twins - Quick Change Artist; Young Holt Unlimited - California Montage; Darrell Banks - Our Love Is In The Pocket; Chuck Jackson - These Chains Of Love; Ann Sexton - You've Been Gone Too Long; Illusions - You Didn't Have To Leave; Bobby Freeman - I'll Never Fall In Love Again; Lenis Guess - Just Ask Me; Crusaders - Put It Where You Want it; Impressions - You've Been Cheatin'; Ramsey Lewis - Wade In The Water. Third visit for Derek Allen, with his own unique style - how the hell he managed to cue in Cody Black's Slowly Molding between his frantic dancing and spins only he knows. A great set, resulting in a steadily filling dance floor. Sam Cooke - Sugar Dumpling on RCA; Richard Popcorn Wylie - It's A Girl's World on Soul Hawk; Jimmy Ruffin - He Who Picks A Rose unissued; Gladys Knight - No One Can Love You More on UK Tamla; Betty Swann - Kiss My Love Goodbye on Atlantic; Kenny Thomas - Crazy World; Bonnie Herman - Hush Don't Cry on Columbia; Paulette - Love You Baby on Contact; Dee Dee Sharp - I'm Coming Home from the Cameo LP; Beverley Ann Sharp - A Three Dollar Bill on Jubilee; James Fountain - Seven Day Lover on UK Cream; Patrice Holloway - Stolen Hours on Capitol; Linda Perry - I Need Someone on Mainstream; Will Collins&Will Power - Anything I Can Do on Bareback, Next up was Mick H guesting for the second time at the Frobisher. Mick over the last few years has built up a tremendous reputation spinning monster sounds a major venues all over the country and tonight was no exception. Mick laid down an incredible spot, kicking off with 70s monsters which he skilfully merged into a "rarest of the rare 60s" finale: Unique Blend - Yes, I Am In Love on Eastbound; Bobby Rich - There's A Girl For Me on Sambea; Ujima - I'm Not Ready on Epic; Eugene Smiley; Innersection - Let Me Love Yuh on Group 5; Eric Lomax - So Good To Me c/u; Nu-Rons - All Of My Love on Nu-Ron; Hamilton Movement; Poets - Wrapped Around Your Finger on J2; Aspirations - You Left Me on Peaches; Don Gardner - Cheatin Kind on Sedgrick; Kenny Gamble - The Joke's on You; Joe Jama - My Life on Optimum; Sensations - Demanding Man on Wayout; Appointments - I Saw You There on Delite; Jimmy Bo Horn to finish. Requests from the floor were Appreciations - I Can't Hide It on Aware, Professionals for Fred and Andy Fisher for Dave - it doesn't get any better than this. The crowd filled the floor and showed their appreciation by applauding every track. Now Follow That!!! Well, Dave had that job, tough as it was, and started his main set with a track he's been featuring for some time, namely Shelly Fisher - Girl I Love You on Dayla. Shelly wrote the song, and Garland Green's version on Gamma/Revue has been a classic for years. Methinks the time for Shelly Fisher's version is long overdue. Dave's set went something like this: Constellations - I Don't Know About You on Gemini Star; Darnells - Call On Me on Atco; Ruby Andrews - Just Loving You on Zodiac; Johnny Howard - The Chase Is On on Bashie; Casanova Two - We Got To Keep On on Early Bird; Masqueraders - Do You Love Me Baby on Wand; Soul Communicators - Those Lonely Nights on Fee Bee; Ascots - Another Day on Mira-don; King Ernest - You Gonna Miss Me on Sonic; A request from Mick H - Bold Breed - Mood For Love on Bold Breed, not many copies of this about - great up tempo sound; Tammy Lavon - It Takes Two on Nation; Geraldine Hunt - Winner Takes All on ABC; Fascinators - In Other Words on Bombay; Mystiques - Put Out The Fire on Twinight; Jimmy Hughes - It Ain't What You Got on Atlantic; Betty Turner - Be Careful Girl on Liberty; Baby Washington - Leave Me Alone on Sue; Volumes - Ain't Gonna Give You Up on Karen. Dave responded to a request for Jerry Williams classic If You Ask Me, which completed his set, and with a full dance floor, set things up quite nicely for Fred's final hour through to the finish at 2am. Fred's spot featured more classic oldies from both the 60s and 70s eras, and satisfied many requests - definitely keeping the dance floor busy. Moses Smith - Girl Across The Street; Younghearts - A Little Togetherness; Velours - I'm Gonna Change; James Barnett - Keep On Talking; Pattie&The Emblems - I'm Gonna Love You A Long Long Time; Nolan Chance - Just Like The Weather; Johnny Wyatt - This Thing Called Love; Nella Dodds - Come Back Baby; Exciters - Blowin Up My Mind; Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor (a request for the bar staff at the Frobisher); Johnny Sayles - I Can't Get Enough; Earl Jackson - Soul Self Satisfaction. To sum up the night - although down on numbers the crown responded and created a great atmosphere. It was a very enjoyable night full of tremendous soulful music. The Trent Soul duo and residents did the business. Thanks for your support - it can't happen without you the punters. 27 March is an All Yorkshire Event, with all the DJs coming from Yorkshire - guests John Britton from Wakefield, John Benson from Mexborough, and Dave and Fred from Normanton. See you there.

Message from Mark B

Dear All, Sorry Ive not posted too much here recently but Ive just had the worst week of my life as my father Alf Bicknell passed away last Monday, so its been a bastard of a week all in all, thanks for all the good wishes etc. its really helped me get through the past few days, some of you may have known my dad had a pretty unique job back in the 60s as he worked for The Beatles so we have had added presure with the press etc. because of his connection with them. I will try and get back on track with all things soulful over the next few weeks, I hope to honour all DJ bookings if i can but dont shout at me if i cant the music being high on emotion makes it just that little bit harder to do. Any of you who may have met my dad will understand how difficult this is right now he was a super bloke and i will miss him so much. He always made my friends off the scene so welcome when they came to the house when i lived at home, he was a real one off. All the best - Mark Bicknell. bicknellmark@aol.com

Out And About In The Midlands

Went to two new venues last night after driving up to Manchester to pick Mark Bicknell up we landed at my place about 7.30pm just enough time for me to have a quick shower and Mark to empty my fridge of its weeks supply of beer, after a tough week for Mark I knew he was back on form, next time he waits in the car ( I should know better).

Well on to the first venue at Fishley Park near Pelsall ( Walsall ) run by Martin Bradley, Paul and I didnt catch the other fellas name but nice guy. These lads ran Lea Manor nr Wolverhampton, But this was not a modern event how could it be with Rob Smith, Dave (I wont even say the word Modern) Rimmer and Mark Bicknell as the Guest line up. With all new venues as a promoter you worry will people come, well they did, around 150 ish not bad for a first night lots of local faces came out to lend their support Phil from the Station, Blue Max ( hes got a best selling book in him) Kenny Onions who kept me amused all night with tales of John Weston, Gary Hollyman, Kiddo and Wendy so a lot of the local faces turned out to support this event.

The Djs all played stroming sets and as I said before Mr B was back on form, every 5 mins a could see a long chubby arm wave an empty beer bottle at me this being my que to get my ass to the bar for his refill( anyone would think that I worked for him). We all ask the question is there room for another Soul night with so much going on, the answer is easy its a big fat YES well done lads cracking venue cracking night.

We left Fishley Park around midnight to head for the New All-Nighter in Birmingham, now I never want to see anyone fail so when I say this please dont read this the wrong way, when I heard a few months ago that Roly Ferguson and Ged Parker were going to put a Nighter on in Birmingham I thought It will never work reason being Brum has never had a strong soul history, that said I cant knock them for trying, well its based at UCE on Moor Lane just off jct 7 M6 the night just did not work for me they had two rooms the problem being the music from the modern room could be heard in the main room, so spent most of the night hearing modern in my left hear and northern in my right, the DJs in the main room did a good job Neil Ruston doing what I think he does best and he wont thank me for saying this but the guy is still a top Northern jock even though he spents most of his time now days pushing forward with soulful house.

Dave Rimmer,Mace and Rob Smith all kept the dance floor busy. Not enough people there to make the venue pay and I am not convinced Birmingham is the right place for a All-Nighter and I really mean this I hope they prove me wrong and Roly and Ged if you are willing to try again then I for one am willing to support you again and urge other folk to do the same.

Marvin Gaye 20 Years ago today

20 YEARS AGO TODAY
So if the picture I paint makes me a sinner or makes me a saint I won't try, no not I, to deny it." — Marvin Gaye, "Dream of a Lifetime"
When the television special honouring Motown's 45th anniversary is recorded Sunday night in Los Angeles, poignancy will be mixed with celebration for the record label whose motto was "The Sound of Young America."
So many of the young and outrageously talented artists who created that sound are now gone.
Four of the five original Temptations are dead, as are original members of the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Miracles, Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells… the list sadly goes on, but the most notable absence will be that of Motown's prince and its biggest-selling artist, the incomparable Marvin Gaye.
Today, Thursday 1st April will be the 20th anniversary of Gaye being shot to death by his father. Friday would have been his 65th birthday.
Like many who remember where they were when they first heard about Kennedy or John Lennon, I remember very vividly where I was in 1984 on hearing about Marvin’s murder on the news.
Marvin, dead? Killed by his father? The day before his birthday?
My mind wrapped itself around one of his most famous lyrics, "Father, Father, we don't need to escalate; For only love can conquer hate."
Had Gaye merely been a singer, his remarkable voice with its astonishing range would have been enough to earn him his status as a soul icon. But he also was a versatile and innovative songwriter, producer and musician, and an artist of unflinching candor.
He could be erotic with "Let's Get it On" or prophetic with "What's Going On."
His version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the 1984 NBA All-Star Game in Philadelphia which had the crowd clapping in tune is the ONLY soulful rendition ever performed.
Except for one notable exception, most of his albums explored the relationships between men and women and the sometimes sacred, sometimes treacherous grounds on which they're built.
Perhaps more than any other singer, Marvin Gaye's name is invoked in songs by other artists as being synonymous with romance — in lyrics like, "Let's play some Marvin Gaye," or "Listening to Marvin all night long."
His 1973 album, "Let's Get It On," is a masterpiece of seduction and one of the most sensual albums ever recorded. His duets with close friend Terrell set the standard for the romantic R&B duet.
The notable exception to his focus on romance was one of the greatest albums ever recorded, 1971's "What's Going On," a socially conscious concept album that gave beautiful, eloquent and visionary witness to poverty, inequality, the Vietnam War, the environment, drug abuse and spiritual longing.
Gaye was a troubled man. He was married and divorced twice. His first wife was 17 years older than he was, and his second wife was 17 years younger.
He had run-ins with the IRS, suffered from insecurities, depression, cocaine addiction and a lifelong conflict with his father.
But we remember him because of his genius, heart and insight.
We listen to him (some of us every day) because Marvin Gaye was a supremely gifted artist who painted songs that makes us want to say over and over again in amazement: mercy, mercy me.
