Craig Charles Northern Soul will never go away - Rolling Stone UK

Been seeing screen caps of this getting posted about on Instagram today. Know not everyone likes or appreciates Craig Charles but wondered what peoples thoughts were on the article.
I've included the link and copied in the text from the article for anyone who can't be arsed to go on the site its self.*
https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/craig-charles-northern-soul-never-140000774.html

As the 50th anniversary of legendary Northern Soul venue Wigan Casino looms, BBC 6 Music has announced plans to mark the milestone with a night of special shows dedicated to the hugely beloved underground movement...
We caught up with Craig Charles ahead of the broadcast to chat about the vitality and community of the movement, and the reasons for why it still holds a pivotal place in British youth culture history.
Tell us a little bit about your personal history with Northern Soul and the stand out record or single which had the biggest impact on you?
Craig Charles: I was too young to go to Wigan Casino but a couple of kids in my school who were a couple of years older, they used to get the bus from Smithdown Road every Friday night and used to beg me to come with them. My mum and dad wouldn’t let me go! So I was an outsider looking in on a Monday at these tired and weary faces and people explaining to me what the atmosphere at these places was like. You have to remember that youth culture at that time was very, very tribal. You had your punks, your rockers, your skinheads, suedeheads, guys into prog rock, your two-tone guys. There was an awful lot of pent-up aggression – loads of fighting. So, they told me about this place where everyone seemed to be happy. Everyone just danced. It was all just about dancing and music. That was my first introduction to it – as an outsider. There are two stand out records for me and they’re probably big ones in the Northern Soul cannon. Al Wilson’s The Snake and Frankie Valli’s The Night. They’re two records that on my show get requested more than any other record.

Pre-order: Soul Junction's Latest Release Jesse James with Everybody's Talking At Me

Press Release:   Jesse James   “Everybody’s Talking At Me/Your More Than A Friend Of Mine”   SJ552
Release Date:     Wednesday August 30TH 2023

Jesse James returns to the Soul Junction roster with a new 45 that features his own unique interpretation of a classic song that is backed with one of the more popular songs from his 1990 “Looking Back” album now brought to you for the first time as a 45 release.

Beginning with the A-side, “Everybody’s Talking At Me” which is Jesse’s unique cover of the folk rock singer Fred Neil’s penned song “Everybody’s Talkin’”. Which although recorded by Neil originally, was made internationally famous by Harry Nilsson when used as part of the theme score for the acclaimed United Artists 1969 film “Midnight Cowboy”. The song has been much covered in the style of a ballad but Jesse’s version recorded under the production skills of close friend Willie Hoskins (Wilhos Productions and Boola Boola Records) is a great up-tempo piano driven version of the song. “Everybody’s Talking At Me” is yet another find from the unissued tapes from the self- financed sessions that Jesse recorded at the Searra Sound Studios in Berkley C.A during 1971 that also has brought us SJ543 “(The Girl In) Clinton Park” and SJ544 “If A Man Ever Loved A Woman (Baby I Love You)”.

While the b-side, features the much, admired modern soul favourite “You’re More Than A Friend Of Mine” which first gained a release on the 1990 ‘Looking Back’ album (Gunsmoke Records). “You’re More Than A Friend Of Mine” was up to that point a previously unissued mid 70’s recording produced by the late song writer /producer Ron Carson. Carson the original owner of the San Francisco Soul Clock Records label remains highly respected for his work with the hit group, ‘The Whispers’ (both on Soul Clock and some of their later Janus recordings). Carson had produced and co-wrote Jesse’s 1975, 20th Century Records release “If You Want A Love Affair/I Never Meant To Love Her” now regarded worldwide as Jesse’s signature song. Carson had a follow up release in the can, which never came to fruition due to Jesse and 20th Century parting company for the second time. Carson by then had moved on and was heavily involved in the production of the Janus distributed blackploitation album “Black Fist” for Happy Fox records. “Black Fist” was a various artists compilation which also featured the Jesse James composition “The Same Thing Happens (Part1 & 2)”. The shelved, proposed 20th Century follow up release would have been “Your More Than A Friend of Mine/I Don’t Want It To End” recorded during 1976. Carson had pitched the idea of a song in a similar vein to the Jackson Sisters 1973 Prophesy Records release “(Why Can’t We Be) More Than Friends” to the songs original songwriting team William Peele Jr and Warren Sams. They duly obliged, coming up with the aforementioned “Your More Than A Friend Of Mine”. Warren Sams along with his half-sister Christine Adams Tripp and their friend Rachel Sanders were none other than the respected vocal trio “Water & Power” who recorded the acclaimed 1975 album of the same name for Fantasy Records and a solitary 45 “Mr Weatherman/If You Don’t Want Me”.

HR 1552 BONNIE BLANCHARD and ANDY AARON – You’re The Only One + A Real Good Lovin’ Man / . Right On Time
A side – WONDERFUL 1970 CROSSOVER DANCER from Philadelphia, sounds just right for today - we all know that this used to be a soulpack record, I’ve put them in there myself – but that was 50 or so years ago, now it’s a £600 minter. As a
bonus our A side contains her other 45 – quite rare and decent in itself.
B side – Right On Time – a delicious funk instrumental, still sounds great today even though the frenzied days of funk digging seem to be a thing of the past; solid drum break.

HR 1553 GEORGE SOULE – Midnight Affair / Cross My Heart
Coupling of 2 great Muscle Shoals sides, both on their 1st time commercial release on 45.
A – Midnight Affair – a Rick Hall-Dan Penn song, Fame recording, previously available only as a 100 Club Anniversary 45 in 2011. Great 1974 Crossover dance, also cut by the wonderful Sandra Wright.
AA - Cross My Heart – a 1970 cut at Muscle Shoals Sound, known from the MSS Publishing Test Pressing that I found around 20 years ago and sold to Soul Sam; a handful of further copies later came to light and increased considerably in valuation, but one still to get proper recognition. Also recorded in Muscle Shoals by Tamiko Jones.

Detroit's Hidden Gem: The Gambrells' Story by MD Records

Today, we have another story to share - the remarkable tale of The Gambrells, a previously unknown girl group from the heart of Detroit. Thanks to the efforts of our researcher and label partner, Jordan Wilson, and the discovery of long-forgotten studio tapes within the Pioneer Studio vault, we can now shed event more light on the incredible journey of Sharon, Pat, and Sandra.
The Gambrells, a trio consisting of sisters Sharon and Sandra Gambrell, along with their close friend Patricia Hunt (Pat Hunt), grew up on Quincy St. in Detroit, just blocks away from the legendary Gordy family of Motown fame. The sisters were second and third in line among ten siblings, and their love for music began at an early age.
In 1965, the talented trio decided to form a duo, but it didn't take long for their harmonies to attract attention. They later expanded to become a powerful trio with the addition of Pat Hunt, a gifted singer and songwriter. It's essential to clarify that Pat Hunt is not the same person as the cousin of Brenda & Patrice Holloway, two different individuals with unique talents.
Pat Hunt, merely 14 years old at the time, penned their first song, "Pain in My Heart," and taught the lyrics to Sharon and Sandra, who eagerly embraced the track. Their breakthrough came when Ollie McLaughlin, a renowned Detroit record producer and label owner, came across the girls through The Gambrells connection with Jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby. Captivated by their talents, Ollie decided to record "Pain in My Heart" for Carla Records 201. Deon Jackson, also recorded a version of the song, but this remained unreleased.
Building on this success, The Gambrells released another single on Carla Records, "You Better Move," a composition again by Pat Hunt (though thought to be initially miscredited to an unknown A. Jones). Despite the buzz, the busy atmosphere at Carla Records in 1966 shifted the focus towards Deon Jackson's and The Capitols career, leaving The Gambrells somewhat overshadowed.
Nevertheless, the trio's journey continued, and they found themselves lending their harmonies to support iconic Motown acts like The Temptations and Brenda Holloway at the renowned 20 Grand Club in Detroit. Although backing vocals brought them some recognition, it wasn't enough to thrust them into the limelight they so rightfully deserved.
Their fortunes changed when Gary Rubin, the owner of Pioneer Recording Studio, discovered their exceptional talent during one of his weekly audition sessions. Convinced of their potential, Gary signed the group, and formed a new group called 'The New Loves,' which included James Cheers and Bobby Franklin as male vocalists and songwriters. Unfortunately, once again, due to the Vietnam War, the group's potential couldn't be fully realised, leading The Gambrells back to background vocal work for Pioneer and other freelance sessions. The New Loves tracks remained unreleased until MD Records released them in March 2022.
Intriguingly, The Gambrells also provided backing vocals for The Tomangoes, a group signed to Pioneer Records in 1967. Their harmonies enriched tracks like 'Loves Got A Hold On Me' alongside the original version of 'You've Been Gone So Long'.
In 1967, 'In-The Pocket Productions,' an independent production group, recognised The Gambrells' potential and asked them to record two songs, "Love Is In The Air" and "I'm In Love Again For The First Time." These tracks were recorded while the girls were still contracted to Pioneer.
Despite their talent and potential, The Gambrells' journey led them through many ups and downs, eventually leading to obscurity. Their brilliance was often overshadowed by bigger names in the music industry.
The discography of The Gambrells includes:
"Pain In My Heart" / "I Want To Be Yours" – Carla Records – 1965
"You Better Move" / "Pain In My Heart" – Carla Records - 1966
"Jive Talk" / "Find A Love" – Pioneer Records – 1966
"My Heart Is Suffering" / "Paradise Of Love" – (Under the name of The New Loves) - 1967
"Just Keep On Loving Me" (Backing vocals by The Gambrells) - 1967
"Loves Got A Hold On Me" / You've Been Gone Too Long" (Backing vocals by The Gambrells) - 1967
"Love Is In The Air" / "I'm In Love Again For The First Time" – Cub Records – 1968
On the memorable date of 9th February 2023, a significant moment unfolded as Jordan graced the screens of "Grayson Perry's Full English." In this special feature, Jordan had the privilege to curate the soundtrack for his appearance on the show. Among the carefully selected tunes was the track, "Jive Talk,".
For The Gambrells, this was a long-awaited recognition of their music from the late 60s. To add to their well-deserved acknowledgment, the licensing of their music to Channel 4 brought forth financial recognition, a fitting tribute to their enduring talent.
We invite you to visit our website at www.mdrecords.co.uk - There, you can grab your own copy of their 45s, and join us in celebrating the legacy of The Gambrells, a treasure trove of soulful melodies that now stands fully recognised and appreciated.

Pre-order: Trambeat - Don't Hold Back / (INST) 45 - LRK Records

LRK are proud to announce their latest 45 release "Dont Hold Back" by Trambeat on limited edition vinyl!
South London Soul Band Trambeat, influenced by the floor shaking sound of 1960's Motor City. With brand new single, "Don't Hold Back"

Trambeat were formed in 2012 by guitarist Graham Potter and drummer Des" Jammy" James. Graham and Des had played together in several bands previously and already had a good musical understanding. Trambeat's manifesto; to write original songs influenced by a love of Northern Soul, Motown, Rocksteady and RnB. But also to look forward and include elements of more contemporary genres. Bass player Nipper Smith, Saxophonists Robin Ogleby and Nadia Barbosa, and organist Emer O'Hanlon were recruited to form the core band and Trambeat set about recording and gigging with various vocalists until, in 2016, Aimee Grinter became Trambeat's permanent lead singer.

Written by Graham Potter and Des James, "Don't Hold Back" is in some ways a comeback single for Trambeat. The pandemic years took their toll on many bands and Trambeat In particular, with the loss of founding member Robin Ogleby being a very hard blow. Following a tribute single in 2021 to raise money for Robin's charities, and a couple of festival gigs in the summer of 2022, they didn't have much appetite for writing new material, and were unsure whether to continue as a band without Robin. It was during a jam between Graham and Des in late 2022 that the bones of "Don't Hold Back" came together. The drums and rhythm guitar clicked into an infectious dance groove with echoes of vintage Motown. The band members came together in the studio with renewed enthusiasm and laid down the track in just a day. The band, who remained close, even during this hiatus, realised how great it was to be back in the studio together again. Graham's lyrics, as well as the euphoric feel of the track, reflected this new optimism within the band. "Don't Hold Back" is a celebration of life, of deep friendships and most of all, of love!

Pre-Order: Broken Hearts Inc - In A Moment / Freedom Is... - Kimberlite Records

Details of a new 45 from Kimberlite Records just emerging, label release notes and audio can be had below...
BROKEN HEARTS INC. - IN A MOMENT b/w FREEDOM IS A LONELY RIDE - KIMBERLITE (KIM009)
RELEASE DATE - Aug 11th 2023
Broken Hearts Inc. are back and more bitter than ever. It may be true that time heals all, but thankfully for us in the four years since their first single, the boys are still unsatisfied in love and therefore have the brooding ballads and heartsick soul music to follow the precedent they’ve set.
With both sides of this record being so strong, In A Moment won the "A" side position simply by a coin flip.  Latin flavoured percussion and warm Hammond tone help to soften the sober lyrics of being blindsided by withdrawn love.   Musically, it’s great crossover soul that effortlessly phases between mid-tempo and dance-tempo while giving a nod to War at their smoothest.
On the other side, the boys venerate Doo-Wop oldies with Freedom Is a Lonely Ride.  Now I get that guys in the cold north of Canada might not have an authentic tie to Doo-Wop tradition… but hell, if Pete Wingfield in rainy old England can make a hit at it, you can’t blame Broken Hearts Inc. for trying it too, can you?  A strolling bass line accompanies radiant harmonies and a striking falsetto lead by Freddy that mourns a failed relationship, thinly dressed in a car-culture metaphor.
It feels really good to put out this record, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.  Broken Hearts Inc. have many more songs written and are contemplating their next move.  Perhaps a handful more singles, perhaps an LP…   However the future plays out, we’re excited to watch where BHI go!

New 45 - Unity - The Other Side of You- Soul Direction Records

A great new 45 from Soul Direction is out for release tomorrow. Label release notes follow below...
Soul Direction are proud to announce the latest release from Atlanta’s Sweet Soul group Unity (Formerly the Decisions).

Unity - The Other Side of You / Going To A Carnival – SD018
RELEASE DATE – 4th AUGUST 2023

Following on from the enormous success of the first two releases by The Decisions on Soul Direction and courtesy of Fred White and the Decisions we give you another double sided masterpiece from master tapes kindly provided by the band.
The 5 young men who formed The Decisions, originally started their own Record Label, York Records in the late 60s and recorded two releases on the label which to this day are still very sought after amongst soul collectors. They then went onto record for Sussex Records in the early 70s. The Los Angeles-based label founded by Clarence Avant and distributed by Buddah Records.
These two tracks were recorded between 1973 and 1975 when Fred & The Decisions made the break from Sussex Records to form the group “Unity”. They went onto write and record one release on the Apex Label which was a creation of Fred White.

On these 2 previously unreleased tracks, Henry Little Jnr. sang the lead on “The Other Side of You” and Fred White sand lead on “Going to A Carnival”, both tracks penned by Fred White. They also recorded to master tapes several sweet soul ballads and crossover soul tracks that until now have remained untouched.
Look out for these and others in the future.

MD Records - The Musical Journey of Tommy Rodgers

MD Records are thrilled to continue our musical journey by returning to Detroit and collaborating with Gary Rubin of Pioneer studio fame. Building upon the success of the immensely popular Alfreda Brockington release, we are excited to delve into the rich musical landscape of Detroit once again.
This studio has solidified its reputation as one of the best under-the-radar gems waiting to be discovered. It has produced a treasure trove of previously unknown tracks, including hidden gems from The Tomangoes. In fact, we still have one track under wraps. Additionally, Pioneer studio brought us the sensational sounds of The Sensations, an unknown band that delivered a captivating northern soul dancer with "Blinded by Pride." The studio also served as the creative hub for esteemed artists such as The Gambrells, Jock Mitchell, Tommy Rodgers, Jonnie Mae Mathews, James Lately, Cody Black and many more.

Now, it gives us great pleasure to unveil two more releases from the Pioneer Vaults. Tommy Rodgers is a name familiar to many for his own talents, along with his association with the Brewster Crew, among others. Each release features a never-before-released A-side, accompanied by alternative, unreleased recordings of previously released tracks. As always, these recordings have been remastered from the original studio tapes by the renowned JJ at Goldenmastering, ensuring that they are revitalised for today's vinyl production methods.
To uncover the intriguing story behind Tommy Rodgers' musical journey, our very own, Jordan Wilson, embarked on an exploration of Tommy's life, diligently documenting his conversations with the artist and his family.
Born as Thomas Gilbert Rodgers, known affectionately as Tommy Rodgers, on December 6th, 1942, he spent his early years residing at 2232 St Joseph Street, near the iconic Brewster-Douglass housing projects. The 1950 census includes Tommy, living with his mother Catherine, sisters Joyce, Betty, Venida, and his younger brother Frank (nicknamed Frankie). Growing up in Detroit, Tommy's family had relocated from Georgia as part of the first great migration (1910-1940), seeking better opportunities in northern and midwestern cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit.
During the 1930s, the Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects were established to accommodate the influx of people moving to Detroit. This affordable housing became a vibrant hub of musical talent, where singers harmonised on street corners and musicians jammed day and night. Notably, this gave rise to legendary figures such as Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard of The Supremes, who would go on to dominate the music world with Berry Gordy and their iconic Motown sound.
Tommy embarked on his educational journey at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, graduating in 1962. It was there that he met his teenage sweetheart, Diana Ross. In her book, "Secrets of a Sparrow," Ross fondly recalls their shared moments, stating, "I had a boyfriend named Tommy Rodgers, who lived just across the street, and he used to walk me to school. Tommy was a really good singer, and we sang a lot together."

In 1961, when Otis Williams was forming a group to audition for the Gordy label, Tommy received an invitation to join the lineup. However, he had to decline due to his draft into the Vietnam War. The group would later become The Temptations, achieving tremendous success worldwide. It's intriguing to consider how Tommy's path might have differed had circumstances been different.
In 1965, as Pioneer Studio expanded, Gary Rubin relocated it to 20014 James Couzens, Detroit. The studio gained attention when Ken Barnard from the Detroit Free Press wrote an article titled "One Lad's Bid to Hit It Big Like Motown." The article announced open auditions at Pioneer Studio, offering aspiring musicians the chance to be signed to either Pioneer or Empire Records.

Throughout the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, Pioneer Recording Studio provided a haven for both professionals and amateurs. Known for its affordability compared to high-tech studios like United Sound or Tera Shirma, Pioneer became the go-to studio in Detroit. Gary Rubin's auditions yielded a wealth of talent, with notable signings including The Gambrells, The New Loves, The Moniques, and The Tomangoes. Unfortunately, many of these tracks remained unheard and unreleased until MD Records took on the task of sharing them with the world.
Why were these tracks left unreleased? The events unfolding in Detroit during that time offer an explanation. In 1967, the Detroit Riot erupted, becoming the largest riot the country had seen since the New York draft riots in 1863. The city was engulfed in chaos, with looters, arsonists, and civilian snipers wreaking havoc. The Vietnam War compounded the challenges faced by Pioneer Studio, as drafted members of groups and artists would often disappear, hindering promotions and live appearances at local venues.
Meanwhile, in New York, Ahmad Jamal, a talented pianist and composer, established AJP Records in 1969. One of his trusted associates, James "Jimmy" Shaw, had connections in Detroit and played a crucial role as the director of A&R for Rock and Gospel, reporting directly to Ahmad Jamal. Shaw's previous work with Golden World Productions and his association with trombone player Don R. White, a member of Motown's Funk Brothers, kept him in the loop regarding promising talent in Detroit.
On October 2nd, 1969, Tommy Rodgers completed the mixes for his five songs at Pioneer Studio. Among the tapes were "Summer Love," "Tell It to The Wind," "United Hearts of America," "Give Me Freedom (Or Give Me Love)," and "Pass the Word." AJP Records announced in Billboard magazine on October 11th, 1969, that "Sing It to The Wind" and "Pass the Word" would be released. This left "Summer Love," "United Hearts of America," and "Give Me Freedom (Or Give Me Love)" in the vault, waiting for their time to shine.
Tommy Rodgers' recordings at Pioneer Studio marked the debut for AJP Records, launching the label that would go on to release albums. Notably, Tommy's younger sibling Frankie Rodgers co-wrote "Pass the Word."

Following the disappointment of the unsuccessful AJP releases, Tommy and Frankie found themselves back in the grind of everyday life. However, in 1974, Tommy Rodgers made a comeback to the vibrant Detroit music scene. This time, he formed a group called "The Brewster Crew," paying homage to his upbringing near the Brewster Housing Projects. Teaming up with Doris Williams and James Nyx Jr, Tommy wrote and produced two tracks for The Brewster Crew to record: "Outta My Life" and "I'm One Who Know." These exceptional tracks were released twice on Lifeline Records, becoming the only known songs to emerge from The Brewster Crew. It is worth noting that while Tommy has shared the existence of unreleased backing tracks, sadly, no vocals were ever overdubbed onto them.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to Tommy, his sister Venida, and Frankie Rodgers for their invaluable contribution in bringing this remarkable story to light. Until now books have been published documenting this amazing scene, however in this book you will find the most comprehensive lists of small indy’s complete discographies.
Compiled by master collector Dave Louis, who has been for over 40 years tracking down artist, label owners and the rarest of the rare 45 RPM recordings all the while taking notes, scanning labels and finding links between publishing companies, writers and arrangers, studio marks and other matrix information.  Dave has been able to compile the most complete lists of labels like Del-Val, Crossfire, Virtue to date - You will not be disappointed. 'The moody and soulful house track 'lnnerside' has been internationally popular since it was first released in 1998.
Shazz - derived from soul, house and jazz - was an identity of French producer Didier Delesalle who co-wrote the song with American-born jazz singer Ken Norris, the featured vocalist on this track.
