Lifeline Weekender 2007 Dates and Bookings

After the great success of the first Lifeline Weekender held in February 2006, you will be pleased to know that we are going to hold another in 2007!

The dates are February 9th, 10th and 11th 2007. The line up will again feature some of the worlds premier Soul DJ's. As well as the usual Lifeline residents, Butch, Andy Dyson, Mick H, Chalky, Cliff Steele and Soul Sam, guests including Dean Anderson, Kitch, Tim Brown, Arthur Fenn & Andy Whitmore and others to be confirmed, will be spinning the finest soul from the 60's and 70's with maybe the odd 80's and funk flavored discs also getting an airing.

Unfortunately the hotel has increased their prices but only by £10 per person per weekend making a total cost of £110, still a bargain in our opinions to spend a weekend listening to the finest soul spinners spinning the finest soul on vinyl in the world!! All those who had rooms for the first weekender in February 2006 will be given first refusal of a room for the 2007 event.

You will have until the end of July to pay your deposit (50% non-refundable, £55) to secure a room. If the deposit not paid then the room will be given to someone on the waiting list who have indicated they would like a room. The balance MUST be paid by November 1st or again the room will be released to someone on the waiting list. We have to be strict with the deadline for the balance to be paid because the hotel stipulates that we pay them the final payment for the use of the hotel for the weekend and we also spent too much time last year chasing late payers...these are the hotel rules not ours unfortunately so we have to be a little more stricter with this than we were last year.

Demand for rooms is greater than what we can supply so it is best you pay your deposits/balances on time to avoid disappointment. If you can't get into the hotel then again weekend passes will be available at £35 with plenty of accommodation close by. Payment......

Cash, postal orders are the preferred option but if you wish to pay by cheque make payable to Karl White. If you require a booking form, e-mail me and I will send you one via e-mail.

All monies to be sent to... Lifeline Weekender 31 Hartington Road Spital Chesterfield Derbyshire S41 0HE

New Members on Soul Source - Validation

Always tried to keep Soul Source easy to view and easy to join
however due to spammers and clowns have had to tighten up the "new members" policy
1. All members must verify their email - a email is sent by site and NEEDS to be replied to before next step
2. Site verifies account, before this is done the site has a look at the username, email given, and profile info
It is important that if wish membership you do try and give as much info as possible
(sorry but if you apply with a free email, odd username and no profile info then it is  highly likely that your account will not get validated
3. Once 1 and 2 gets done, your account will be open and you should have full access to most features on Soul Source
If have any problems with the "new members" procedure - ie no email etc please use the contact link at the top of this page
thanks
due to upgrades etc this is a very rushed doc and hopefully will be tightended up later

The term Northern Soul means so.....

The term Northern Soul means so.....
A post in the "all about soul" forum by soul source long timer in town mikey that just needed to be lifted

For me the term Northern Soul, means so much more than just the music. I dont mean 'just the music' in a derogatory way.
Northern Soul encompasses the whole concept of the scene. The camaradrie that spills out into our whole life away from clubs and record bars. The type of person even willing to endure some of the lengths we go to, to enjoy our music. The collecting Gene. The dancing Gene.
It is a suitably generic all encompassing term that doesnt narrow the concept of a scene that plays a varied style of music. (Some not remotely soul).
It was perfect for when the majority of the clubs were in the north, but timeless enough to carry 30+ years of recognition by people who dont really know anything about our music. Apart from hazy memories of schoolmates in youth clubs leaping around dancefloors to records these people didn't know, and they probably brought along themselves and badgered the DJ to play.
It says to me, meeting people in motorway services and spotting that person you have known for 20 years, and cant ask their name, because after all this time you probably had been told it once, but cant remember what the hell it was. But still greet like a long lost brother or sister.
It says talking with people where noone cares if you are a millionare, or on the dole. A school teacher or a Lorry driver or a famous singer, an actor off the TV. You are just a Northern Soul fan, and that is generally all you need to make a friend.
It says, add alcohol/drugs whatever, and still people know how to interact in the cordial way, that seems impossible in many other scenarios for the public at large.
It says sweaty clubs, empty clubs, nice venues and dives. It says here is part of my life I have never regretted.
It says every time I drive through Yate, or pass Stafford on a train, or visit aunties and cousins in Leicester, I have to go a certain way that takes me past the old venue, or crane my neck and try to glimpse the old place as the train trundles to a halt at Stafford station.
It says whenever I walk down Oxford Street I HAVE to peer through the doorway. I dont know why, but it has to be done.
It says when Soft Cell or Yazz come on the radio I feel the urge to change station. but in a knowing, almost pitious way. Not quite contemptuous. Not quite.
It says mates still think I am mental 30 years later, and dismiss my bleary eyed stop off for a pint on Sunday lunch time, on my way home to bed.
It says Matt and Conway and Vince and Bob and Hippo, and a thousand others I still see regularly at Soul nights.
It says Mike and Bernadette and Kevin and Andy who I see about town, but who dont go any more.
It says Paul who we lost in a car accident, but think about almost everyday, and not just at Easter.
If it was just Soul, jeez no-one would have given our music more than a second thought. It sets us and our music out as different, and the term is probably IMO, more important than Wigan and Stafford, the Torch, 100 club etc etc all added up and put together.
And it even means Poo Pan is something to be sought after. How many people can say the same!!??

Candi Staton Interview Online at the Independent

Candi Staton: That heart still runs free
A career marked by alcoholism, abuse and some great music.
Preview of a interview where Gavin Martin talks to Candi Staton
Published: 06 April 2006
Eating her lunch in the lobby of the Holiday Inn in Camden, north London, Candi Staton - the 63-year-old survivor, heroine and sexual avenger of American deep soul - has made herself at home. Staton is a small, voluptuous woman, with the vitality you'd hope for in the lady famed for "Young Hearts Run Free", a British hit three times over. That's a distinction shared by her most recent chart entry, "You Got the Love", a collaboration with The Source. She's had her struggles, but her new album, His Hands, shows that her voice is still a marvel of brooding, quivering intensity. As she talks, her eyes sparkle; she speaks in warm, husky tones, full of zest, as she pours out her life story. Canzata Maria Staton was born in 1943 in Hanceville, Alabama - just in time to live through the pre-Civil Rights days of supremacist terror. "I was always afraid. A black man near us was castrated. I was worried for my brothers," she says. "With my own eyes, I've seen the Ku-Klux-Klan coming through our neighbourhood, carrying torches, with the white sheets on. I was frightened all the time...............
.............. may not sing the cheating songs any more, but music is still her refuge. "It was an escape when I was a child. I'd get lost in song, listening to the radio, and when the blues and gospel stations stopped, the country stations came on. I loved it all. But I never wanted to sound like anyone else. If I felt I was like Aretha or Gladys Knight, I'd quickly go back into myself and pull out me. I wanted to find my own expression in song; that's why I always stuck with me.......

Major Williams and The Majortones Band

Major Williams and The Majortones Band
Long time readers of this place may remember this 45 featuring a bit over the years, from my first attempts to get home with the track name in memory from 100 club when first heard Mick Smith play it (and then finding out it was a cover) to when posted that found the group that Major Williams formed in 70s
At the time it was still covered, the group had no internet presence and only got in touch via emailing clubs the group were playing at, eventually got in touch, but as soon as single was mentioned the talk finished.Had been told since that they had been already approached with a view to a uk release but they were not interested
With the recent respark, had a look to see what the group was up to
Found out they do now have a website now, worth a visit and if you goto the music page can listen to a 4 min plus version of
Girl Don't Leave Me The Major Tones Band, featuring Ray Williams
Well got my ears going!
I was going to post the clip on here but then though a bit (actually did post it but took it down after 5 mins or so). My thinking is that this group have put out this track available to download free and while easy to pass on and post here and other sites
Think would be a good thing to let them know the interest in the original versions and this one, other wise it be lost and by downloading it from their site rather than passing on via non related sites they may get a idea and some acknowledgement for their work
here's the link to the site

Last Call -Jackie Ross & Syl Johnson Gig at the Frobisher

For those of you that still haven't got tickets but still intend to come, or have just found out about it!! Yes people are ringing up and telling us that they have, amazingly, only just found out about it.

The remaining few tickets will be available on a pay on the door basis at £20.00, but we strongly recommend that you contact us using any of the methods listed below, making ticket reservations in your name.

CHICAGO SOUL LEGENDS VISIT YORKSHIRE

Jackie Ross and Syl Johnson, backed by Snake Davis&The Suspicions, will be appearing at the Frobisher, Stanley Ferry, Wakefield on 25th March 2006. This well-respected soul night has just celebrated its 10 years anniversary, with a very successful allnighter, and now stages a Chicago Soul Special.

Direct from Chicago, exclusively for one night only, two Chicago soul legends will be performing some of their wonderful songs.

The event will also be a tribute to the late singer/songwriter Johnny Moore, who sadly died in May 2005. Johnny wrote a number of songs for Syl Johnson, and was a long time friend of Jackie Ross. All three artists are good friends of Frobisher promoter Dave Box, who celebrates his 60th birthday on the same night.

Apart from producing that authentic 60s backing sound, which they are very well known for, Snake Davis&The Suspicions will also perform their own set during the night.

Jackie Ross and Syl Johnson have much more in common than residing in Chicago. In the early 60s Jackie was singing gospel in the Chicago area, but wanted to establish herself in the R&B market. Her break came at a talent contest at the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago. Syl Johnson's band was playing there, Jackie won the contest, and the award was a weekend of singing and being paid. That started her singing in Syl Johnson's band. 2006 - some 43 years later - and they are back on stage together again. Jackie will perform songs from many of the Chicago labels she was associated with, including Chess, Brunswick, Fountain, Golden Ear, GSF. Jackie only once visited the UK, in 1964, with Johnny Nash, on a Chess promotional tour, to promote her hit "Selfish One". Jackie has not performed any of her other material in the UK before. For the first time, this very underrated artist gets her chance to perform in front of a very appreciative soul crowd. Expect to hear: "Selfish One", "Trust In Me", "Take Me For A Little While", "Keep Your Chin Up" and many more. Her new Grapevine CD "Take The Weight Off Me" will be available on the night. !!Get a signed copy!!

Syl Johnson - singer/songwriter/producer; a true legend in soul music. From quote by writer Bill Pollak: "Soul music is a language. The satisfaction that we derive from a great soul performance comes from our sense that the singer is expressing could not have been expressed as well in any other language. That's why a great soul performance means so much more than just a combination of music and lyrics". By this standard, Syl Johnson is a master of the soul genre. Syl Johnson is still very much a performer and has just returned from performing in Turkey, supported with some of his original band members from Pieces of Peace. During April 2005, Syl performed at the Barbican in London, as part of "It Came From Memphis" - Hi Records showcase. Many soul fans in the UK knew nothing about the show or the artists appearing, and although the crowd was appreciative, the artists did not get the warm welcome that only true soul fans can show. This is your second chance to see this unique artist live on stage. Syl will perform not only hits from his Hi Records period, including "We Did It", "Anyway The Wind Blows" but will include songs from his own labels Twilight and Twinight: "Try Me", "One Way Ticket", and his northern soul rarity "Do You Know What Love Is" on Special Agent, plus many more, including a very special duet with Jackie Ross.

This will undoubtedly be a night to remember - don't miss it.

The remaining few tickets will be available on a pay on the door basis at £20.00, but we strongly recommend that you contact us using any of the methods listed below, making ticket reservations in your name.

Food is available at the venue from 5pm until 9pm.

DETAILS: Doors open at 9pm and close at 3am. Bar 'til 2am.

The Suspicions will perform around 10.30pm.Jackie and Syl, with Snake Davis&the Suspicions, will be on stage around 12.30 onwards.

Carl Carlton to sing at the 14th Cleethorpes Weekender

Detroit soul legend "Little" Carl Carlton has been added to the bill for the 6TS Northern & Modern Soul Weekender on the 9th, 10th & 11th June. Like his Cleethorpes co-star Darrow Fletcher, Carl was a teenage soul sensation in the 60s and also went on to have a long and successful career well into the eighties.
His biggest hit "Bad Mama Jama" has featured in three major films recently but it's his more soulful dance numbers like "I Can Feel It", "Nothing No Sweeter Than Love", "So What", "Drop By My Place", "You Can't Stop A Man In Love" and of course the monumental "Competition Ain't Nothin'", that he will perform live for his Cleethorpes crowd. Like Darrow, his early start to his career means he is younger than some of the more weathered DJs appearing at the weekender.
These include Butch, Mick Smith, Keith Money, Ginger, Pat Brady, Bob Hinsley, Soul Sam, Roger Banks, Terry Jones, Andy Davies, Ivor Jones, Cliff Steele, Arthur Fenn, Mark Randall, Dave Rimmer and the fresh faced Harboro Horace; to name but a phew. There are weekend dance passes available.
Go to www.6ts.info for booking details.

The Royal Five - Official Release of two Northern Gems

The Royal Five "Don't Stop" "Nobody Else" P and L
Now those who still have a few memory cells left after the last weekends northern souling exploits, may have just suffered a flashback when reading the title above. As "Don't Stop" though an unreleased track has already found fame on Northern Soul side of life as a past regular floor filler for the now retired DJ Andy Rix at venues like Scenesville and Drunken Monkey, and has been featured on this site as one of the exclusives six pacs for a fair few years now.

While a lot of unreleased tracks are destined by their very nature to remain out of the reach of soul fans on vinyl, this time thankfully its different. Thanks to the likes of Des Parker and others, your ordinary Joe soul fanatic can now get their hands on this and another unreleased gem for less than a tenner, and while the scene has been plagued recently by look alike sh*te quality over priced illegal copies its good to be able to write, that this release is fully legal, offical and all that. So hats off to those involved and have been told this first release is the start of a series of similar releases, all dues paid and low priced.

The 45 has been out as pre-release copies to a select band of djs and both sides have been building up a following uk wide. The official launch date is at the forthcoming weekender at Prestatyn and copies will be available at £9.99
Can listen to both tracks below, on "Dont Stop" Reggie Marshall takes the lead while on the more mid tempo "Nobody Else" Ben Durr takes over.
As said copies priced at £9.99 will be available at the Prestatyn Weekender , to reserve your copy or to buy online (temp measure as will be available very very soon online) or for further details please email Chris on Chris@newcenturysoul.co.uk

Dean Anderson on Boundary Fm returns for a four week run

Dean Anderson show returns on Sunday 12 March

Broadcasting via the net and Local FM the show returns for a four week run. From 6 to 9pm with live studio guests and a great mix of soul sounds the current four week run also includes a live show from the forthcoming Prestatyn Weekender.

Live locally to Newark area on 87.7fm or via the web www.boundarysound.co.uk

read more for clip of Deans bio from Boundary Sound Born and raised in Newark, being of Jamician Parentage, my early musical influences were Reggae and Soul Music of the time. In the early to mid 70's at the height of the Northern Soul craze in the UK I started collecting/buying records. I was very pleased to find some of my Mum's own records i.e. Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Cliff, Spencer Davis were also popular on this great scence. I started DJing along with some mates at local youth clubs and dinner time school discos around 76. From then my love for American "influenced" soul music mainly from the 60's has grown. Since the early 1980's I have D J 'd at numerous alnighters and soul clubs in England, Scotland, Wales and also occassionally on the Continent. My love for the music gets stronger with age. My hunger for finding obscure, undiscovered records continue. My STUPIDITY for travelling the length and depth of the Country, week in and week out GOES ON. ENJOY THE SHOW.

Sad News Dave McCadden RIP

Posted in 2006
Just have had word that Dave McCadden passed away on Sunday Night in hospital in Manchester, two years after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Dave was respected and well known on the soul side of things for his various writings and the fanzines that he run over the years. He was a member/visitor on here a few times since the start of the site, the first time was when featured clips of some of his Soul Galore writings and was then just setting off down the comedian road, he returned now and again over the years and was an active member fairly recently.
Though never met in person his writings over the years have given me great enjoyment and he definitely had a knack of telling a story, the Jades in the chipshop being a great example, and his Soul Galore fanzines have to the most revisited ones that have, the way he could bring a laugh in a just a few words when writing about a 45 was a gift .
Was a character and am sure many stories such as the real background to the soul sam letter to Echoes are just waiting to be retold
Sad news indeed RIP
Clips from issue 8 of Soul Galore can be read here in an article originally published on Soul Source in late 90s

(updated)
A tribute to him as Dave Purdy (his standup name) can be found here on the Chortle site here
Update 2023 The Chortle link is no longer valid, so have added the below
https://www.theguardian.com/news/2006/feb/22/obituaries.readersobituaries
The funeral is next week, have took liberty of lifted the below from one of the comedy forums

just in case anyone knows Dave's family and is thinking of phoning with their condolences...Yvonne (Mrs. P) has asked that you PLEASE do it via me Paul Haslam  I'll collate any messages then pass them on when things aren't so hectic. This is because....well...they have enough to do right now. Cheers,

New Soul Multi Flyer Launch

Over the last 7 months we have been printing and designing a monthly multi flyer in which we give space to other promoters, this has helped bring down the cost, We all assisted in getting them distributed around venues nationwide. It was A4 folded to give 16 spaces for events or dealers, due to the interest, both locally and nationally that this has generated, we find our ourselves in the position of having to expand our flyer.....   The New Multi Flyer will be An 8 page A5, 4 sheets of A4 folded printed on both sides and stapled to make a multi flyer booklet in full colour. You will get a full colour 1/4 page for your event and we will produce 10k each month which will be distributed for the last weekend of each month, first issue end of Feb   10k flyers each month ( so you save on printing your own)   National distribution team in place ( who all have a vested interest to make sure the Multi flyers are distributed  locally and nationally, they are all promoters who have a flyer in the multi flyer)   Free design service ( we will design a template which we will change details each moth or you can send your own art work)   Every venue you go to today has a large number of individual flyers placed on the table, more often than not these are not read. It is easier to read information from one source then from many sources.   One multi flyer saves you Time and Money & Energy,  it stands out from the rest, it does get picked up and read all this for £25 per 1/4 page.   March issue will be a Prestatyn special with an extra 5k held back to be put out at the UK's premier weekender    if you would like to be part of the multi flyer just email me back with details of your event or send artwork in jpeg or pdf no later than Feb 16th. We only have 20 spaces left so don't delay in getting your details to us. Promotions taking part so far are  NCS, 100 Club, Crossfire, Studio 1, Jct 9, Salwick, The Sink, Steam, Soulfeet Leicester, The Drunken Monkey, R&B Records, Chapman Records, Soulsearcher, Winsford Allnighter, Bury Town Hall, Soulvation, Natwich Civic, Alsager, Bidds, Keele, Soul At The Manor, Amlwch Allnighter, Groovy Grooves, Looking Back. Soultown's Middleton Allnighter. Gene McFadden Sad news

Philly soul singer/songwriter Gene Mcfadden has died at his Philadelphia home from cancer he was 56.
Best known for Aint No Stoppin Us Now with his songwriting parter John Whitehead he also wrote a string of major hits for the Philly and TSOP labels.
Philly Label founders Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff released a statement about Mcfadden and Whitehead saying "they were indispensible and their music capabilities were uniquely flexible. Not only could they write sensational singles but they could write amazing album songs too"Gene McFadden was born in Philidelphia and as a teenager along with John Whitehead were part of Shrine band The Epsilons which was managed by Otis Redding until his death in 1967. A short time with Stax followed before they began a long association with Gamble and Huff.
The scene loses yet another legend.

KIM WESTON IN WORKSOP CHANGE OF VENUE

KIM WESTON IN WORKSOP, DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES (like the club owner not paying his bills !!!) The two Kim Weston Gigs in Worksop have been Changed to another venue.

THE REGAL CENTRE THEATRE, CARLTON ROAD ,WORKSOP, NOTTS.
We could not get both dates at the venue so have combined the two nights into one performance on SATURDAY 11th February 2006. 7.00 pm to Midnight

Every cloud has a silver lining and the new venue holds more so the ticket price is cheaper !!!
Tickets now £15 each. I think I have managed to contact all those who purchased or reserved tickets from ME, but those who got them direct from the Westgate Club must get a refund from there. Westgate tickets are not valid at the new venue.

read more for more...

The new venue is situated 100meters away from the Train Station on Carlton Road (A60)  close to the town centre and holds 280 seated for the show, plus there is a Large foyer area and seperate Lic Bar where we will be playing Motown and classic soul/northern.

I have personally taken on the running of the event in order to ensure that Kim gets paid !!
Thanks to all who have offered to help at such short notice, especially Paul, Simon and Andy at the Regal who have offered the use of the venue at a discounted rate, we need bodies through the door to make sure everyone has a good night and that they take tons of cash over the bar !!

Soul Or Nothing : No more Lloyd Street

After the first Soul Or Nothing got 2006 off to a flying start last week, here's some bad news.
Stevie Cato passed on that the venue is no more
Got a call yesterday morning from the manager of 14 Loyd Street,he told me that the bar is closed, gone out of business, looks like the owner aint paid his bills..
Just had ten thousand flyers and posters done on Friday too and paid for, what a fucking waste...
I have been looking around all yesterday for another venue, had a chat with a few club owners but Loyd Street is a hard place to match, thats the best space i have ever had for one of my nights...
I hope to find a venue this week to keep the Febuary date...
If you know of any place for a one off then let me know asap..
Hundreds of hours promoting 14 Loyd Street,it make you so mad but its like getting dumped by a girl, you dust yourself off and move on...
I hope tohave all the djs booked for Feb 11th at a one off place, fingers crossed, all the other dj booking are on hold..
Like i said to a girl once,"it was good while it lasted"..Lets hope the we don't get to hear the fat lady sing...
Thanks to all of you for the last 7 months
at Loyd Street,we had some good times..

Wilson Pickett RIP

NEW YORK - Wilson Pickett, the soul pioneer best known for the fiery hits “Mustang Sally” and “In The Midnight Hour,” died of a heart attack Thursday in a Reston, Va., hospital, according to his management company. He was 64.
Chris Tuthill of the management company Talent Source said Pickett had been suffering from health problems for the past year. Pickett lived in Ashburn, Va.
“He did his part. It was a great ride, a great trip, I loved him and I’m sure he was well-loved, and I just hope that he’s given his props,” Michael Wilson Pickett, the singer’s son, told WRC-TV in Washington after his death.

Soulsville See's The Light Friday 24 Feb

Jamie and Rich (Soulsville International Playboys) are pleased to announce a new venue and a new chapter for the 'Soulsville' night in Leeds starting on Friday 24 February

We're staying in Leeds City Centre and moving to the recently refurbished 'Northern Light' Club on Cross York Street, Leeds, LS2 7EE. We've got the 'Velvet' Bar situated downstairs in this 3 room venue. It's a converted Methodist School Building with plenty of character.

Room holds 250, though we reckon 150 would leave plenty of room for a bit of a boogie. In the summer there are sliding doors which open out into an enclosed courtyard with seating areas. Cloakroom available on entrance. Areas will be provided for record dealers. Just contact us to reserve a table.

We're negotiating Beer promotions at the moment, and our aim is to have certain bottled beers/spirits for £2.00. The bar doesn't have draught beers, and specialise in a wide range of imported bottled beers and spirits.

Times are gonna be 8:00pm - 3:00am. This venue has a music license until 6:00am, so there's plenty of scope for bigger events once the venue is established.
Cost on the door is £4.00 before 9:00pm and £5.00 after.

Access is good off the motorways, and is bang facing Leeds Central Bus/Coach Station. Plenty of well-lit street parking just around the corner near Leeds Parrish [sic] Church (See Map Link) I've been told by the club owner (Who's building a load of apartments on the site next door) that parking will be available later in the year in the multi-storey car-park opposite (currently closes at 11pm) There's also plenty of Holiday/Premier/Travel Taverns lodges etc. within walking distance. The Train station is just over a 5 minute walk.

>>Link To Northern Light Map<<
Music policy is going to be a little bit of everything, with a slight leaning towards the different. People who've been to Soulsville before will know what to expect!

Residents vinyl types as previous: Jamie Hartford, Rich Buckley, Pat Brady and John Parker.

We're really gonna strive to get the best guests available from all the 4 corners of the UK and the continent. There's gonna be some surprises, and this really should put Leeds back on the Rare Soul map; where it deserves to be!

We've got the best minds available working on our artwork and flyers, and these should be available in the very near future.

For all those people who attended 'Soulsville' at The Baby Jupiter, we thank you for you support, and hopefully we can carry on the superb tight-knit atmosphere that the place generated.

We do look forward to seeing you in our new home!

Don't Forget The Motor City - The 5th edition online now!!

The Ultimate Guide to Motown (and related) recordings, 1956 - 1972
Online  now fith edition of this great online motown resource
Don't Forget The Motor City - The 5th edition online now!!
This is the fifth edition of Don't Forget The Motor City, and the second to appear online. As well as taking the story on to cover recordings up to the end of 1972, when Motown left Detroit, this edition incorporates most of the significant CD releases since the last update. And numerous corrections have been made, although doubtless many errors remain unamended.
INTRODUCTION : Keith Hughes
Don't Forget The Motor City - 5th edition

This is the fifth edition of Don't Forget The Motor City, and the second to appear online. As well as taking the story on to cover recordings up to the end of 1972, when Motown left Detroit, this edition incorporates most of the significant CD releases since the last update. And numerous corrections have been made, although doubtless many errors remain unamended.
Songs
This listing contains all titles published by Jobete up to the end of 1972 for which recordings have appeared on vinyl or CD.
In addition, it contains all titles known to have been recorded for any of the following labels (including unreleased recordings), before the end of 1972, and that are not published by Jobete:
Tamla, Motown, Gordy, VIP, Soul, Miracle, Melody, Workshop Jazz, Divinity, Rare Earth, Mowest, Anna, Vega, Checkmate, Harvey, HPC, Message, Tri-Phi, Ric-Tic, Golden World, and Wingate
It also contains all titles that were written by, or had recordings produced or arranged by, Berry Gordy Jr, not included above, before the end of 1972.
Recordings
For each song, all known US recordings up until the end of 1972 are shown. Where the first known recording of a song was not until 1973 or later, this recording only is shown.
Releases
For each recording, all known US releases, up until the end of 1972, are shown. Where the first release of a recording was not until 1973 or later, this release only is shown. Where the only known release of a recording was outside the US, this release is shown. A large number of CD releases also appear, but not all.
Song titles
Where the song appears in the Jobete Catalog, the title appears here as it does in the Catalog. Correct titles of non-Jobete songs are derived where possible from independent sources such as BMI and ASCAP. A particular problem is posed by recordings known only from acetate labels, or discographies: in some cases, a guess has been made about the identity of a particular title, and future research, or release of the material in question, may prove these guesses wrong.
Song writers
Much standardisation has taken place: in general, a writer's first and last names are shown, in the most commonly known form (e.g. Eddie Holland for Edward J. Holland Jr); combination names (e.g. Brianbert, Janard) are expanded to full names; other aliases are in general preserved. Names of writers are taken from the Jobete Catalog where possible. For non-Jobete titles, the writers shown are derived where possible from independent sources such as BMI and ASCAP.
Publishers
Two publishers separated by comma (e.g. Jobete,Jansumar) indicate shared publishing rights. Two publishers separated by slashes (e.g. Birdsong/Jobete) indicate publishing rights acquired by the second publisher from the first. The publishers listed are the publishers of the title at the time; no attempt is made to indicate who owns the titles now.
Versions
Different versions of the same song by the same artist are listed only when there are significant audible differences, usually due to different recordings (takes) being used, or to substantially different track durations, or to the use of overdubbing. Stereo/mono mixes have not normally been treated as different versions. Where it has not been possible to listen to a recording, a guess has sometimes been made about whether it is the same as or different from other known recordings of the song by the artist in question: future research or release of the material in question may prove these guesses wrong.
Producers
Standardisation of names as for writers. Wherever possible, producers listed on single-play records have been preferred to those listed on albums, as the latter are not always accurate. Some producers (or chief producers) have been inferred from master numbers where they are otherwise unknown (this is usually possible with Motown master numbers from August 1964 on).
Arrangers
Standardisation of names as for writers.
Accompanists
Standardisation of names as for writers. Additional information has been acquired from a variety of sources (including listening to the recordings).
Type of release
Where records with a particular catalogue number are known to have been pressed, a date is shown in front of the catalogue number. (There is no indication whether commercial copies were pressed.) Where it is thought no copies were pressed, "Scheduled" is used in place of the date. "Acetate" details have been derived where possible from studying copies of the labels, and listening to tape copies of the records. Some "bootleg" records are also shown: their presence in the listing does not mean that the author condones bootlegging, or can supply any information about the availability of these records. Details of "Unissued" recordings have been collected from a variety of sources, some published and some private, and checked wherever possible.
Release dates
Where possible, dates of release have been taken from information supplied by Motown, e.g. on album/CD liner notes. Otherwise dates have been taken from published discographies; where these disagree, a "best guess" has been taken.
Recording dates
Again where possible, recording dates have been taken from information supplied by Motown, again mainly on album/CD liner notes.

Lou Rawls RIP

LOS ANGELES -- Lou Rawls, the Grammy Award-winning singer whose velvety baritone was one of the most recognizable voices in pop music on hits such as "Love Is a Hurtin' Thing," "Lady Love" and "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine," died Friday. He was 70.

Rawls died of lung cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said his publicist, Paul Shefrin. Rawls, who had lived in Scottsdale, Ariz., since 2003, was diagnosed with lung cancer about a year ago.Rawls' years as a recording artist included more than 70 albums, three Grammys, 13 Grammy nominations, one platinum album, five gold albums and a gold single. His distinctively rich baritone has been described as "dark as mahogany, as deep as a rolling river" and "as warm as smooth gravel heated over a fireplace."After hearing him perform in Las Vegas,

"Widely praised as a song stylist, the singer defied categorization: During his career, he sang everything from gospel to blues to jazz to soul to pop......

Known for his love of rare 60's soul, John was known by many as the 60's Soul Bandito or the Mad Mexican.
Having DJ'd throughout Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, and being a Wilton Ballroom regular he will be sadly missed by many.
Our thoughts are with John's family at this sad time.
