Ann Sexton - Live At The Wilton - Saturday 14th November

A Big Thank You - and - Ann Sexton Live At The Wilton
After the disappointment felt by everyone when Marvin Smith was taken ill and had to cancel his concert last November, we felt like calling it a day with regard to live artists at the Wilton’s Soulful Sessions.  We continued with the event and, thanks to all who attended, you turned the disappointment into a great success, and helped us financially to recover some of our losses.
We would like to thank all the people who attended, with a special thank you to those who refused their refunds, telling us to put the money towards next year’s event, and because of your support, we have decided to give it another go.
14th November 2015, is our next soul night, featuring a very special performance from a southern soul legend – ANN SEXTON – supported by our incredible full eight piece band, including background vocalists – PUSH.

Let’s give Ann a welcome she will never forget, with a Wilton capacity crowd that, no doubt, will know more about Ann’s recording career than she can probably remember herself.
Ann’s sets will include her well known songs from the 70’s, deep and uptempo classics that she recorded initially for David Lee’s Impel label and later for John Richbourg’s (R) Seventy Seven label, something for everyone’s taste. We have asked Ann to perform something extra special, her very first recording that she cut way back in 1967. She was the featured vocalist on a track cut by Elijah and the Ebonies titled “I Confess”, a great ballad issued on the Gitana label, cut in Ann’s hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. On this release she was featured as Mary Sexton and must have been in her late teens when this recording was released. We are so pleased and privileged that Ann has agreed to perform this song onstage at the Wilton for the very first time in Europe since she recorded the song all those years ago. To make sure we’ve covered all the bases, Ann will perform her latest 2010 release “Rising Up”, a fantastic uptempo soulful house track.

Tickets are now on sale at £20.00 or online at £21.50 at www.wheatsheaf.com/allnighter – watch the Soul Source events guide and the Wilton’s pages on Facebook for updates.

Looking forward to November.

Dave and Val.

Arthur G Wright - Sad News RIP

Ady C posted up in the forums today the sad news that Arthur G Wright  passed on last week
"A giant of our music died last week aged 78 years. His influence on soul music was immense and we listen to his arrangements and guitar at virtually every night we go out to dance. So sad"
you can read and comment on this sad news via the forum thread here...
The website Arthur G Wright is well worth a visit as it is full of info, pics and more, the 'about me' section is a 4 page story of his early history and sure there's a lot more on there.
http://arthurgwright.com
Clip below is from there
...worked for many years as a "first call session player on bass/guitar", my guitar solos have been heard on such recordings as: Diana Ross' "Love Hangover", Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way", and other Motown recording artists such as "Smokey" Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On", and The Temptations . Other artists include Ray Charles, Vikki Carr, Donna Summer, Jose Feliciano, Ike & Tina Turner, Billy Preston and blues singer Little Johnny Taylor. I worked with producer Hal Davis and other producers, even co-produced with him and others over the 20+ years that I worked at Motown Records...

Lucky Cordell R.I.P.

Lucky Cordell R.I.P, Chicago radio legend

Sadly he lost his life due to a house fire that he and his daughter Pat of Pat & Pam singing fame, were rescued from last week. He had attempted to save his daughter in the fire, but sustained 70% burns in the process and lost his fight for life yesterday (Tuesday).

Lucky was a legendary Chicago radio DJ who eventually went on to manage his beloved WVON station. He grew up along side a generation of great radio DJ's, Frankie Croker, Jimmy Bishop, Al Perkins as well as his friends E.Rodney Jones and Herb 'The Cool Gent' Kent in his home city.

Besides DJing he also turned his hand to record producing, occasionally singing and label owning. The musical talent was passed down to his daughters Pat & Pam who recorded the pretty 'Hey love on Daydream Records. He was also very proud of getting the career of Heaven & Earth off the ground working very much behind the scenes on their first stuynning LP on GEC.

He became good friends with many record collectors in the U.S. and across Europe.and was always ready to help track down that elusive 45 and the people behind them for many of us. I spent many a happy hour down in his basement full of 45, digging and chatting with him.

He will be sadly missed by many ...............................

Cream Cracker 10 years finish in November

Not too long to go now till the 1st of August for the 10th Anniversary Cream Cracker.
I have also decided that the 21st of Novembers Charity Cream Cracker in aid of Scotties Little Soldiers will be the last Cream Cracker.
I wasnt going to mention this until nearer the date as I didn't want the usual "He's only doing this to get bums on seats and then it'll be back on next year", but Pete Lyster said I should, so I am. I have been thinking about this for around 18 months. To be honest there's just TOO much on. I cant blame people for attending events nearer to them as Im sure anyone of us would and do. I have always attempted to get a varied range of DJ's each time at Cream Cracker and give as many unknowns as possible a chance to come and share the tunes they love with the Jacobs. I don't get monthly events with the SAME 5 DJ's playing the same tunes EVERY month, and then hear people moaning about them but still attend. Wher'es the sense in that, or when I get emails and phonecalls from people saying "We didn't come because we didn't know any of the DJ's!!!!!!!!!!!!" As the promoter I have always done my homework and invited guests whom I truly believe would compliment the Cream Cracker and give The Jacobs value for money, its not a mate thing, you need mates for that.

I have truly enjoyed running Cream Cracker for the past 10 years and honestly didn't think we would last this long. The Rothwell Football Club was PERFECT for us and it was a real shame when it went bust. Finding another venue was a nightmare, that offered cheap drinks, a large carpark, a late finish to make the journey worthwhile and a reasonably priced hire charge so that I could keep the entrance down to a £5. having 6 or 7 guest dj's each time meant along with the hire charge there wasnt really anything left over in the pot, but this wasn't a problem in my mind as I didnt start it up for that reason. I just wanted an event that played bloody good 60's and RnB with the emphasis on dance. Whether that be rare, obscure, overplayed, underplayed, top 500 etc... It was ALWAYS the guests choice within the parametres advertised. You wouldn't believe the CRAP you get thrown at you when you decide to promote. Still we stuck at it and Im proud to say that we have had some of ( in my view) the greatest DJ's in the country come and guest for the Jacobs. Not a single person that I have ever approached to come and guest for us has ever turned me down and declined and that means a great deal to me. The crowd has changed considerably over the 10 years, and I think for the better. I love the way the Jacobs show their feelings when someone sticks a modern tune on, as we don't do Modern at Cream Cracker. We have never attempted or said that we are "upfront" whatever that is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My thanks though honestly go to the Jacobs, the ones who have supported the Cream Cracker everytime, and just come along to get Cream Crackered. A few people who DJ most weekends now, had their first spot at Cream Cracker and its great that they have gone onto bigger and better things. Some probably wouldn't admit it to you though.

So in my opinion 10 years has been a damn good run and to hopefully finish in November and raise a respectable amount for a worthwhile charity that we've supported for a good few years would be a great way to call it a day.

Ron Ellington Shy: A Lifetime In Entertainment.

Ron Ellington Shy:  A Lifetime In Entertainment.
Ron Ellington Shy is one of show businesses most versatile and enduring characters. His career has seen him star and perform alongside some of Hollywood’s top names.
Ron the nephew of celebrated jazz band leader “Duke” (Edward Kennedy) Ellington was born during 1941 in Cleveland Ohio, with his family later relocating to the West Coast. A talented teenage musical scholar, the first group he joined was Rudy Hunter & The Fabulous Tones, their minimum requirement for prospective group members was to have the ability to play 5 separate instruments as well as being able to sing. Ron an accomplished saxophonist, trombonist, bass guitarist, drum, keyboard and harmonica player, got the Job. Later Ron joined Don & Dewey of “leavin’ It All Up To You” fame. He briefly left them before returning once again to Partner Dewey Terry following Don “Sugarcane” Harris’s imprisonment for narcotic offences.

At different times during the late 60’s and 70’s, Ron presented his own cable TV musical and talk shows, ‘The Ron Ellington Show’ followed by the ‘Las Vegas Legends’ show which he co-hosted with several of the town’s most notable ‘Elvis’ impersonators.
During the 1970’s Ron was to further his acting career by landing parts in small screen blockbusters, Dallas, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest and Jake & The Fatman. His big screen credits include Hammerlock (with Pat Morita), Hell To Pay (with former Bionic Man actor Lee Majors) and Gang Warz (Robert Vaughn).

Ron has continued to be a popular and respected performer throughout the clubs of Las Vegas, The Tropicana, Sahara, Frontier and Mint Hotels etc, etc. later returning to his native Cleveland taking up the position of Musical Director at WKTC Channel 3.

Ron Shy’s recording career stretches as far back as the Doo-Wop era of the 1950’s.  Ron’s vocals can be found on the local East L.A hit by Little Julian Herrera & The Tigers “I Remember Linda/True Fine Mama” which gained a release on Art Laboe’s, Starla label. Ron was one of Little Julian’s backing group, the Tigers alongside Ernie Prentice, Ray Collins and James Thompson. Ron claims that it was James Thompson and he that actually wrote the song although the label credits the song to Egnoian (Art Laboe) and Otis (Johnny Otis). The flipside “True Fine Mama is a cover version of the Little Richard song.
In 1963 Ron recorded the Ed cob penned “The Ballad Of Billy Strong/You Can Take Your Saturday Nights” for Herb Newman’s Era  (3110) label, under the artist name of just Ron Ellington.

At the beginning of the 1970’s Ron was living in Dallas, Texas with his brother Leslie (a football player with the Dallas Cowboys). Ron had several business interests in Dallas including restaurants and a night club which he co-owned with a partner Tony Barber. The name of the night club was ‘The Twelve Signs’ (a reference to the twelve signs of the Zodiac). During one of Ron’s evening performances he was approached by recorded producer Hadley Murrell (the man behind The Servicemen on Windhit and Pathway). Hadley persuaded Ron to record a song he had written entitled “Everybody Wants, Nobody Cares” which Ron eventually recorded on Hadley’s own Sevens International label.  Although “Everybody Wants, Nobody Cares” did receive extensive airplay it was to be the songs flipside the Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman penned “I Count The Tears” originally recorded by The Drifters that really took off. It was Ron’s choice to cover The Drifters song a personal favourite of his from his time working alongside them. Although recorded in 1971, Ron version of “I Count The Tears” still had the required 60’s feel to it that would eventually lead the fanatical East Midland Northern Soul DJ Rob Marriot to spin it under the cover up name of Roy Hamilton.

During the 70’s and into the 80’s Ron was to perform alongside Marvin “Rip” Spencer in a latter-day version of the popular 1950’s doo-wop duo Marvin & Johnny. Marvin Spencer was the nephew of the 1950’s original duo’s founding member Marvin Phillips. This later re-incarnation continued to perform all of their predecessor’s popular hits, “Cherry Pie”, “Tick Tock” and “Daddy Loves Baby” amongst others.
Although Ron had made several solo recordings, the majority of his recording output had been made while performing as a member of several different ensembles. So during 1976 Ron was to be advised by his friend veteran L.A. record producer H.B. Barnum to concentrate more on becoming a solo performer, with H.B offering to produce him. Ron signed to H.B’s ‘Little Star’ Label, where H.B produced several tracks on him, although only two tracks were to gain a 45 release, the H.B. Barnum, Walter Johnson penned “Don’t You Know” backed with the Don Grady penned “Didn’t Mean To Break Your Heart”. This release has since proved to be the Little Star labels most sought after 45 single. Ironically at circa the same time another  H.B. Barnum artist blue-eyed singer Judy Street had found a huge following on the UK Northern Soul Scene with her 60’s pop/soul recording “What” (Strider 0004). A licensing deal with the UK based Grapevine label followed for the release of “What” to satisfy the records UK demand. Upon the arrival of Judy’s tapes in England, it was found that H.B had also included a tape of the unissued Ron Shy tracks. While Judy Street’s “What” went on to achieve cult status, Ron’s tape remained gathering dust in Grapevine owner, John Anderson’s garage. Ron’s little Star 45 did eventually later become a secret sound on the modern/crossover scene. While Ron was to release some of his unissued Little Star tracks on a later cd project of his own entitled “Flirtations”.

Having beaten cancer on two separate occasions, and at the age of 74 Ron is currently still working the clubs, with his shows repertoire including the songs “ Don’t They Know”, Cherry Pie” Didn’t Mean To Break Your Heart” etc,  as well as appearing on the same bill as the current line up of the  ‘The Vibrations’ (Okeh, Neptune, Mandela, etc). He is also due to star in a tribute film to the late Sam Cook. If you care to take a look, some of Ron’s recent performances can be found on You Tube accompanying his son, Taber Ellington Shy.
Following the discovery of the unissued J.B. Bingham tracks in 2012, which H.B. Barnum also produced a licensing deal was struck to release Ron’s unissued material as well. Upon playing the tapes once more we realised that a second and superior version of “Don’t You Know” existed which included female backing vocals and added instrumentation and was also longer than issued 45 single. Recently with a few more 45 copies of the Lou Rawlsesque “Don’t You Know” (briefly being covered up as ‘The Flowers’) being unearthed, the record has grown in popularity throughout the European Northern and Modern soul fraternity.
So now before you have the previously unissued superior version of “Don’t You Know” coupled with a further Barnum and Johnson penned previously unissued dancer “Any Port In A Storm”.

A tale of two Dittys - Bletsoe Reunion 2

A TALE OF TWO DITTYS.
I'm very much aware that ditty is not the correct word, but it allowed me a literary reference, just to remind me the following is just the usual Sunday morning wibble. If it helps sing the words as you read them, or hum if your vocal abilities resemble my own.
The title refers to 2 reviews of last night's outing. The first is for the busy, 'White Rabbit' types who undoubtedly have a huge list of chores to perform and every minute counts, in the interest of diversity, it also caters for those with a diagnosed short attention span.
REVIEW 1
I went to the Bletsoe reunion last night, it was bloody brilliant, I'm home now!!
REVIEW 2.
This one is mainly written for me, and anyone who finds themself in a similar fugue state on completion of an all-nighter. I'm afraid I make no apologies for what will probably be a fairly long meandering ramble, it allows me to unwind, and cleanse my mind of words that are clogging up an already ailing thought process. Plus, you don't have to read it, that's what REVIEW 1 is for.
So I woke up Saturday morning, contemplating just why I hadn't gone to Bridlington, that is absolutely no reflection on Bletsoe, just one of those 'bugger I'm envious' moments after reading all the posts on events ''oop tha' way'' so far. RobWicks is that remotely Yorksherian, no worries if it isn't, I'm coming to Brid next year for definite, so you'll be able to correct any shortcomings, don't do it via punches to the arms though, linguistic correction will be fine you big bear
Back to Bletsoe. I didn't go the first time around, so wasn't exactly sure what to expect, I've read and been told a lot about it, but obviously you have to experience it for yourself, or in this case, experience the closest thing to it, which was the reunion.
IF YOU WEREN'T THERE LAST NIGHT, YOU CAN MISS OUT THIS NEXT BIT
I got there pretty much as it was starting, parked the car in a field, noted, with a sigh of relief the lack of Massey Fergusons and stepped into the unknown. It was indeed a barn, bales of straw providing seating all around the stone dance floor, an area with seating and next to it a barbecue. There was already quite a few in, saw that Sandra Crawley had commandeered a table and a 'special seat', and made my way over. The bag was immediately plonked under someone's seat, I think Alison Smalley's and said some quick hellos. This is always quite a dangerous operation, but I'm going to try to recall who was there, because everyone of them was good company when I wasn't dancing, and made me smile, in a good way. Dave Crawley, who gave me a booklet on the sounds broken/played at Bletsoe from 1970, which I'm actually going to read.Steve Heinsen who's been floating about on the northern scene this time around from about the same time as I returned, so always good for a reminisce, his partner Linda Doe, Mick and Debbie Lewin, Mick just got to say at this point, you're a really top lad, and I like the way you no longer feel obliged to pummel me, when I get a bit cheeky, aren't we grown up these days  Alison's other half John 'the gentleman', Smalley, Clint andSteph Dennis. Interesting chat Steph, and although it might not have sounded like it, I understand completely where you're coming from, been there and done the same thing xx Maureen Walker Mc Farlane who's a pleasure to dance alongside, and who she says she's going to ''dance her ass off'', she's not kidding like emoticon Chris and Olly 'The lens' Pearson who must have taken 400 photographs at least, but along with the other photographers, Kevin Wood, Steph, Steve H and Dave C, will provide an indelible memory of a fantastic night for those of us in attendance. Steve Brown, the man behind the reunion, who should be duly proud of his efforts. Long time mate, and still top quality DJ Glenn Bellamy, who's another gentleman and answered all my questions even though they seemed incessant. His lovely wife Pia. Daryn Etherington who I actually got time to have a pleasant chat to, although she did warn me about crying wolf hahaha her friend Josie. It's at this point I wish I had a fucking dicta-phone, was chatting to a lad who I thought said his name was Col and that he was on my friends list. Clearly hearing isn't my strongpoint, so apologies buddy. He's a decent dancer and he was there with his sister also a very elegant dancer and her bloke (he was from Huddersfield).Julia and her husband, Corfu buddies like emoticon Esmond Morgan, Barry Lookerstill burning up the dance floor, Tony Adamson, and Phil Attley.
Personally I thought the atmosphere crackled along from start to finish, once the dancing started, which was pretty quickly, it continued throughout the night, there weren't loads of left at the end, but those that were, would happily have carried on, it was just that sort of night. Incredibly friendly vibe, it was clear that some of those there, probably only bring themselves out to the reunion, (just an observation, might not be correct) and just love meeting up with old friends. It was actually a pleasure to witness, and reminded me very much of the King's Hall, when my generation all seem to congregate and burble excitedly about the past, guess it's just an occupational hazard with northern soul  As mentioned earlier the dance floor was stone, but it didn't make any difference, a quick blast of talc made it very danceable, as did the stuff Esmond was throwing down, I didn't catch the name but it was basically some sort of slidefuckingquick that did exactly what it said on whatever it was contained in
I doubt there were many records I didn't know, but it was still very much back to school, for me. Years of associating certain records with venues, were dismissed as Bletsoe had already played them. It was very much an eye opener, and someone with a keener interest than my own in what was played where, would have been in their element, that said, I was actually enthralled at times, I'm easily pleased eh. The night really sped along, and I can't say anymore than it was an experience that I'm really glad I've had, and I'd definitely go back for more, the next time it's on like emoticon
You'd think this would really finish there, but there's an after story. Late arrival to the soiree Derek Smiley fancied a coffee, as did I, so he in his naivety suggested we find somewhere. He hadn't reckoned on 2 things, my ability to get lost (he has a little of the same talent) and my inability to shut up  I suggested McDonalds, which I know is nearby, but suddenly realised my directional capabilities were somewhat impaired, as I looked at the gate to the road, I had not a clue which way to go. Derek jumped in, said he knew a nearby services, so I said fine, I'll follow you. Blind leading the blind comes to mind, as we drove almost to Kettering, me following behind giggling, because I was suddenly aware of what it must be like to rely on me for a route. We finally got to the motorway where this fabled services was situated, only to find that the road had been closed for ''important roadworks''. This also made me chuckle, but I'd probably have found (thinking of putting this bit in brackets) funny at that point, so there was recognition that the thought processes had secretly slid down a very steep hill, and weren't about to reappear anytime soon... don't be so judgemental. So we decided to change direction, and headed back to McDonalds. I treated Derek to a spontaneous tour of Ringstead, as I managed to get utterly lost and turned the wrong way. Didn't really care at this point, but somehow found my way back to the main drag, and we duly arrived at Mcdonalds. We actually had a really useful chat, talked about the northern soul scene today, the impact of the internet on it and loads of other stuff. The description is clearly sketchy as I doubt either of us can recall the topics covered, but I think I've got away with it. I finally released Derek after 3 hours, and sped home to 'relax', by writing this. Soz. Derek you're good company bud, pleasure to spend time with you like emoticon
It would appear I have reached the relaxed unwound state I aspired to lol.

Pied Piper - Follow Your Soul - Kent Cd - Out Now

Many cities in the USA have a place in the hearts of Rare Soul aficionados but none more so than Detroit and Pied Piper has always been highly revered by collectors and dancers alike. Ever since the first instalment of the Pied Piper recordings by Kent (A New Concept In Detroit Soul), before they had even finished listening people were asking when is the next one out?

Well out it is and the standard as you would expect is right up there with the first with a selection of gems, both previously released on 45 and some that surprisingly given the quality had been left in the can in the vaults for decades.

Pied Piper was started by Jack Ashford and Shelley Haims with their own Giant label. But with the help and addition of various musicians, writers, arrangers and producers, amongst them Lorraine Chandler and Funk Brothers Mike Terry, Joe Hunter and Herbie Williams to name but a few their talent soon spread to labels such as Karate, Kapp and RCA.

You only have to see a 45 with the name Pied Piper on it or any of those involved to know you have a quality release in your hands, the vast majority highly collectable and many commanding a large amount of money.

This CD kicks off with one that lay in the vaults for many years until it was found and dusted down and exposed to the world via Ady Croasdell at the world famous 100 Club all-nighters is September Jone’s “Voodoo Madamoiselle”. An infectious dancer that reached cult status pretty quickly and was helped along the way by a YouTube video showing Levanna McLean dancing in somewhere far afield. September also features with two other tracks. “No More Love” was the flip to her classic Kapp outing “I’m Coming Home” and lastly with her version of Mikki Farrow’s “Could It Be” but this time titled “You Better Know Why”. A great version but Mikki just edges it for me. Mikki Farrow does feature on the CD with her glorious “Set My Heart At Ease” which has achieved classic status over the years

Another unissued gem that has reached cult status with little effort is Nancy Wilcox with “He’ll Be Leaving You”. One listen to this classy soulful up-tempo dancer and it isn’t hard to see why. Nancy also feature on the CD with “More Than A Memory”. Another class dancers, lyrically the better of the two for me and more soulful but if I had to choose one or the other I would struggle!

Lorraine Chandler is featured with three tracks. The first, Lorraine’s failed attempt at the James Bond theme “You Only Live Twice” has become a classic since it was first aired at the 100 Club many years ago and has since featured on a Kent 100 Club Anniversary 45. Here we have an alternative outing, the original first take, not as polished as the previous take but still a great record nonetheless. The second track, “Lost Without You” is a glorious soulful mid-tempo outing. The song was co-written and recorded by Teddy Randazzo in 1964, two years prior to Lorraine’s take which sadly remained in the can. Why some of this material never saw the light of day until nigh on 40 years later is beyond me. Her third outing for this CD is her Northern Soul classic “Giant” release “What Can I Do”, well known to dancers and collectors alike.

The Hesitations feature twice with two from one of the great Soul LP’s “Soul Superman”. The fabulous mid-tempo outing “Wait A Minute” and the stomper “That’s What Love Is” of which the backing would be used for the Northern Soul monster Eddie Parker’s “I'm Gone”.

Tony Hester is featured here with “Watch Yourself”, another Northern Soul classic. He also responsible for “Just Can’t Leave You” but whilst that isn’t featured, the backing track was utilized by the team for another that lay dormant in the vaults until being unleashed by Ady on “Love Will Find A Way” by Harry Gates. This has been featured on the turntables down the 100 Club and other venues around the country to widely appreciated dancers and chin-strokers alike

Another of the all time great Soul LP’s is Freddy Butler’s “With A Dab Of Soul”. Freddy features with two tracks. “They Say (I’m Afraid Of Losing You)” a truly wonderful slice of soul music and “Give Me Lots Of Lovin”, a delightful mid-tempo number that has delighted dancers for over three decades and the quality has ensured the LP has remained highly sought after.

Those behind the music get the chance to shine with two tracks, one previously unreleased backing track entitled “Love Sick” and the second is “Hold To My Baby”, the vocal version being by The Cavaliers. The Cavaliers do though give us two offerings on the CD. An alternate take of their classic RCA outing “Ooh It Hurts Me” which should need little or no introduction. The second surprisingly lay dormant in the vaults and begs the question why? “Without Someone To Tell Me” is a superb dancer, as good in my opinion as “Ooh It Hurts Me”.

The Metros are a highly regarded group amongst both dancers and collectors alike with many of their 45’s having reached classic status on the UK Northern Soul Scene. Here we have two tracks, both mid-tempo offerings “It’s Right Now “ was released a couple of years after being laid down, not by the Metros but by group member Joe Buckman on Jack Ashford and Lorraine Chandler’s Sepia label. It is clearly a group outing though. The second is the previously unreleased mid-tempo mover “You Don’t Know Me Do You”.

Northern Soul classics from Sharon Scott with “Could It Be You” and The Dynamics with ”I Need Your Love” both feature. Both still getting played on a regular basis decades after first getting turntable action here in the UK and still commanding a three-figure sum price wise. Sam E Solo with his Ruby/Imperial outing “Love Is Not A Game” completes the selection for this compilation, still a delightful mid-tempo number I don’t hear to much these days.
What is surprising is this was all laid down within a two year period, 1965 - 1967. A relatively short period of time given the amount of quality recordings which simply highlights the of talent that was Pied Piper.

As you would expect another superb release from Kent, the extensive sleeve notes from Ady Croasdell are worth the price alone with some fabulous photos. I do wish Kent would release the sleeve notes alone for their CD’s in a book.

Also worth checking out if you’ve been living in outer Mongolia in a tent is the first Pied Piper outing from Kent “Pied Piper Presents A New Concept In Detroit Soul” and of course the RCA “Rare Collectable and Soulful” compilations which of course feature Pied Piper productions and recordings

Ain't Gonna Run No More - The Mighty Lovers

Press Release: Mighty Lovers “Ain’t Gonna Run No More/(She Keeps)Driving Me

Out Of My Mind” SJ1001

Release Date: Monday June 1st 2015

The Mighty Lovers “Ain’t Gonna Run No More” on Soul Hawk records was once regarded as just a cheap Detroit collectors label filler, but with the current popularity of a more funkier soul sound it’s quirky dance groove has seen this 45 grow in popularity and demand throughout Europe. Therefore we at Soul Junction as part of our current Licensing deal with the Wylie family have chosen to reissue it to meet the current demand.

The Mighty Lovers were reputedly connected to the Chicago group the Ideals who recorded for the Satellite and St. Lawrence labels. As The Mighty Lovers they recorded the song “The Mighty Lover” which was released twice on Sammy Kaplan’s Boo-Ga-Loo label, credited to both the Mighty Lovers (Boo-Ga-Loo 468) and as the Ideals (Boo-Ga-Loo 108).

We currently can’t confirm the true identity of the Mighty Lovers but what we do know is that “Ain’t Gonna Run No More” was recorded in Chicago in 1970 under the direction of Popcorn Wylie who also played piano on the session. The session also featured Buford “Fabb” Glanton and Leroy Emanuel on Lead and Bass guitar respectively. The distinctive horn intro was provided by Trumpeter Ron Jackson. While the b-side is a great little feel good dancer “(She Keeps) Driving Me Out Of My Mind” which also shares the same backing track as Stanley Mitchells northern soul classic “Quit Twisting My Arm” on Dynamo records. As well as the New Holidays Westbound release “My BabyAin’t a Plaything”. Using the same backing track on different songs was a common practice of Producer Popcorn Wylie.

Veteran Detroit singer Ortheia Barnes, known for her rich alto voice, and also her ministry and work in Africa, died Friday in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands...

Barnes-Kennerly, blessed with a powerful contralto voice, grew up singing gospel music in her church choir, moving into the R&B world in her teens after her older brother, J.J. Barnes, scored success...

...Rev. Robert Smith of New Bethel Baptist Church said people need to know she was more than a singer.

"She was also a great missionary who planted water wells all over Africa. This was a great passion for her. A person with that kind of love — she could receive applause and accolades for her singing, but many people drinking water in Kenya have no idea that the well is there because she worked so hard. She was a great giver of life."

Reflections from the Corfu Weekender May 2015

So 24 hours or so after the event, I thought it would be right and proper to put together a few words to reflect the weekender as a whole.
For those with a short attention span, it was absolutely unforgettable, and all in all BRILLIANT!!

For anybody else who can firstly forgive my propensity to waffle at a moment's notice, and who like a little more detail as they've managed to move beyond the attention span of a goldfish, the following

Over the last decade and a half, those of us who are out almost every week, can't have failed to notice the upsurge in cliques, personally I put it down to (amongst other things) a glut of local soul nights, and our generation finally coming to terms with the internet and technology in general, I leave myself out of the latter reason, as too many people can attest differently.

So BANG along comes a weekender (and I appreciate there are many foreign weekenders, but I'm purely concentrating on this one) that bucks the trend. We flew in from all over Great Britain, descending on Benitzes like the proverbial plague of locusts, and not for one instant did I, and I can only speak for me, but can say what I was witnessing, see anybody that wasn't happy to mix with anyone. I'm not sure how the locals viewed this to start with, but I'm pretty sure by the end, we'd converted them to Britishness lol.

First thing, the weather, it was 25 degrees and above virtually every day, and we all know sunshine releases happy endorphins, this may not be factually correct, but I'm counting on the fact, that nobody can really be asked to google what I've said to make sure So we're all in a good place from day 1, Thursday evening was a mixture of Greek culture, followed by an impromptu northern night, so the dancing began, and this was in the hotel itself, the venue was yet to be unveiled.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday was all at the 'Stadium', a very large arena that if this event grows in the way I think it should and will, can accommodate many more of us. Friday was just immense, pure joy on people's faces, not something you witness every day, and a coming together that was reminiscent of the old days, as previously mentioned no cliques, just a complete morphing together by everyone there. No one-upmanship on show, which helped define the incredible atmosphere. The room was big enough for us all to dance when we wanted, and retire to the pool area to rest and chat, and I know it sounds corny but I don't care, the sound of laughter was the dominant feature outside, making the night, and the mood unforgettable. For me, it was up there with any night I've attended over the last 10 years, I was so comfortable and in my element, and I saw nobody feeling any different.

The Saturday, the huge upstairs arena was opened up, to be honest the way it was set out, it was too big for us, especially as the modern room was also on downstairs, but I talked to Amanda Bradford (The Promoter and person mainly behind the event) and she'd already spotted there needed to be a little tweaking. We also spoke on the way home, and Mandy confirmed, that things were already in place to improve what was already a startlingly good event. So back to the night, musically, something for everyone, so wherever you are on the northern scene, a newish returnee or a 'Justified and Ancient' it wasn't long before you'd hear something you'd just have to dance to. The hotel owner graciously allowed the downstairs room to carry on until 3 every morning (against Greek law) so the best of both worlds was musically available.

Onto the Sunday, a party night to compare to any I've been to at any weekender and I've attended a few, it was firstly meant to finish at 11, but the enthusiasm of the dancers and maybe the consumption of alcohol, had a little to do with it as well, meant we finally left the venue around 3 in the morning. The 4 days were a blur, entertaining, enjoyable and as I've said absolutely unforgettable, please feel free to mentally affix the appropriate profanity before the aforementioned descriptive words for emphasis, I suggest starting with an F perhaps hahaha

In conclusion, I spoke to a lot of people at the weekender, and can safely say everyone enjoyed it from start to finish, it was a 'memory factory' and I think production was high this weekend. It takes a lot these days for me to be bothered to put pen to paper, this weekender poked me in the eye and demanded I do, well done Amanda, a job well done!!!

BB King Rip

BB King has died in Las Vegas at age 89, his lawyer says.
Brent Bryson told the Associated Press King died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday at his home in Las Vegas.

Although he had continued to perform well into his 80s, the 15-time Grammy winner suffered from diabetes and had been in declining health during the past year. He collapsed during a concert in Chicago last October, later blaming dehydration and exhaustion. He had been in hospice care at his Las Vegas home.

Lil Gray - Are You Fooling - The Story

Lil Gray: “Are You Fooling”

Lil Gray was born Leoncy Luvern Lloyd on the 3rd of July 1929 in the city of Hattiesburg Mississippi. She later moved to Chicago with her great grandmother during 1948, where she met her future husband Norwood Gray Sr, whom she married in 1950. Their first son Norwood Gray Jr was born in 1951 followed by a daughter Denise in 1952 and a further two sons Melvin in 1954 and Romaunt in 1956 (now both sadly deceased). Lil’s husband Norwood Sr, held down two jobs, working by day for the Peoples Gas Company, and by night and weekends as a plumber. He eventually made enough money to allow his growing family to move from an apartment to a house, where he later built a basement studio for Lil who was a practicing licensed beautician to work from. Lil was a regular singer in church and held aspirations of one day becoming a professional performer. Her husband was very supportive of his wife’s ambitions, paying for her to receive singing lessons from a voice coach by the name of Zilner T. Randolph, himself a respected jazz musician.

Following Zilners training, Lil began to perform in local clubs from 1963 onwards. She later sang with blues legend Willie Wally Dixon’s Revue. During 1965 one of Chicago’s most influential Jazz, Blues and RnB clubs of the 1950’s, The Club Delisa (named after its original owners The Delisa Brothers) was reopened by WVON (The Voice Of A Nation) radio station disc jockeys E. Rodney Jones and Purvis Spann. It just happened that by chance Lil’s husband Norwood was employed to carry out some plumbing work prior to the clubs reopening. Whilst at the club Norwood mentioned his wife to Purvis Spann, and it was from this conversation that Lil was eventually introduced to local record label entrepreneur and WVON recording engineer, Ulysses Samuel Warren.

Ulysses Warren or as he was more commonly known, U. S. Warren had recently formed his own record label under the name of Jerma Records (although he didn’t copyright the name until 1966).

Warren signed Lil to his label where she recorded three 45 releases under the stage name of Lil Gray (rather than Leoncy Gray). Firstly “Are You Fooling/I Want To Tell (You Something Blues)” Jerma (101) followed by “Out Of Nowhere( You Suddenly Appeared)/ I Got Tears All Around Me” Jerma (102) and finally “I Got Tears All Around Me/One Day Your Gonna Get Burned” Jerma (103).

“I Want To Tell” (You Something Blues) was championed Purvis Spann on his regular WVON late night blues radio show but the record never really made it big in Chicago, but it did go on to receive extensive airplay in Philadelphia. Lil’s follow up singles again didn’t take the Chicago listening audience by storm, But undeterred by the lack of a hit record, Lil continued to work as a full time performer in clubs in and around the city of Chicago, frequently appearing with Simtec Simmons and Wylie Dixon this lasted until circa late1969.

As the 1970’s dawned Lil began to ease back on her own performing career and began to manage several bands some of which she employed as backing musicians at her own ever decreasing personal performances.

One of the band’s she managed was called ‘The Dynamic Sounds’ which included her son Norwood Jr, Norwood too was a former pupil of Zilner T. Randolph, with whom he had learnt to play the bass guitar. This earlier version of the Dynamic Sounds performed as a 3 man combo with Norwood being accompanied by his childhood friend and neighbour Anthony Barnes a rhythm guitarist, and more often than not using which ever session drummer was available at the time. As well as backing Lil Gray they also did session work for U.S Warren. Both Norwood and Antony’s performing credits can be found on Warrens later collectable funk album “For A Few Funky Dues More (Chytowns 2001). Chytowns being another of Warren’s label logo’s which he operated from his home at 1410 East 72nd St, Chicago.

Norwood and Anthony later went their separate ways. In 1969 Norwood Jr was invited to play on a session that also featured a brass section that included Charles ‘Butch’ Carter (Trombone), Milton Thomas (Soprano and Tenor Saxophone), Louis Minter (Alto Saxophone) and the late Kevin Thompson (Trumpet). It was from this chance meeting and with the later addition of Clifford Conley (Guitar), Ronald Scott (Keyboards), Dennis Howell (Drums) and finally Otis Gould (Conga Drums and Percussion) that a new larger version of The Dynamic Sound was born, this time around renaming themselves, The Dynamic Sounds Orchestra (DSO). This new young group of musician’s where taken under the guiding influence of Lil Gray, when she became their full time manager in 1971, a position she held until the DSO broke up in 1979. During which time Lil’s young protégé’s would go on to become the backing and road band for one the windy cities most respected and world renowned groups The Chi-Lites.

Following the eventual breakup of the DSO in 1979 Lil gradually retired from the music business to enjoy life as a housewife and grandmother, which she continued to do until her untimely death in 2000 from heart failure.

Soulshakers Bamberg Celebrates 10 Years

------------------------- SoulShakers Bamberg 10 --------------------------

As always there is a little trepidation in the weeks leading up to this event in our house. Will anyone turn up? Will the guest DJ's fit in ?, Will the weather be nice ? Have either of us any good records to play?

Well Malayka left to go there on the Sunday to get everything ready and regularly rang to tell me this and that was fine. I stayed until Thursday to do my radio show and take Soul Sam with me. The radio show went well as a sort of warm up and it was clear we would have reasonable turn out. But then a hick up, Sam felt he couldn't travel and the heat of the venue would be too much for him, so 2 hours before the taxi arrived and with a bit of a quivering lip, he made the decision not to come. So quick call to Malayka to tell her the news and then a further three calls from her and Arthur Fenn, Thorsten Wegner & David David Ripolles agree to step up, so onwards and upwards.

Arrive late Thursday afternoon to a wet Bamberg and the news that the Japanese group have missed their connecting flight in Munich and will not arrive until Friday. Off to the warm up event all the same and arrive to a busier than usual venue with people milling around everywhere. Held in an alternative cinema, the event occupies a number of lounges and a bar with DJ’s spinning and people renewing old friendship. This can take a while as there are people hear from the U.S., Scandinavia, the U.K. and right across Europe, many you haven’t seen for a year. Noako, Stefan, Mr Steven Mister-Fish Clancy kept everyone happy with some cool tunes and then off to bed.

Friday arrived, still wet but as the day wore on the mood lifted as more and more people arrived in the city and regulars heading to the favourite bars to catch up with others. Eventually the Japanese party arrived to inform us that they felt so bad about missing the flight yesterday that they slept on the floor of the departure lounge all night so they wouldn’t miss this one. For the afternoon a football game had been organised, ‘Jumpers For Goal Posts’ but in the end only the Germans turned up, so the Germans beat the Germans on penalties. Come 9pm the doors open and people streamed in from the get go, this was gonna be busy, hard to pick out individual DJ’s as each room was jumpin all night. With a line up of Butch, Lars Bulnheim, Marc Forrest, Brad Hales, Malayka, David Ripolles, Arthur Fenn, Thorsten Wegner, Ryuhei TheMan, Daisuke Kuroda and Myself, most bases were covered. Ryuhei & Daisuke were doing their first sets ever outside of Japan and instantly had the crowd eating out of their palms in both rooms. Butch walked up to me with a big smile at one point and said the modern room was the best ever so much so that a couple of times it was literary impossible to get in the room. The two rooms do have a little overlap musically, but in the main the big room is for big beat ballsy tunes, northern, funk and a sprinkling of similar modern. The smaller room more rhythm base modern, funk & boogie.

Saturday, the sun is shining normal Bamberg conditions have returned. Malayka’s up and out the door as the alldayer starts in 15mins. I’m a bit slower, getting old, so off to do a bit of grocery shopping for the DJ house, then down to join everyone at Caffebar Kranen. Situated on the banks of the river, the afternoon affair is held in a cool cafe bar. I arrive half an hour in and it’s already busy with people spilling out into the tables and chairs out front. Music is jumping, many are grabbing some well earned lunch. This is my first chance to chat to many in a more relaxed fashion, Pat & Peter Bleasdale sit there with beaming faces and ‘Dad’ tells me how much they are enjoying their first visit. It is a cacophony of languages, but everyone gets themselves understood, with more friendships being renewed and many made for the first time. DJ’s inside are just as multi cultural with Brenda Hernandez from the U.S., Giles Morel, France, Raphi Gruenig Switzerland and Hendrik Irmscher, Germany. As the afternoon wears on this is when record boxes appear, from Diggin Dave and others and deals are done on mystic pieces of plastic. As the afternoon ends people make a lot of noise for the DJ’s of the afternoon and then scuttle off for a quick sleep, food before night time manoeuvres.

Saturday night’s all-nighter is much the same as Friday, packed to the rafters, with the doors having to close at 1am for half an hour as they hit capacity of 1000 peeps, special mention to David, Thorsten & Arthur who stepped up with no notice and did outstanding jobs. Over the two nights the music has been a dream, plenty of now Bamberg classics, lots of new tunes for eager ears and dancers and a wide diversity of styles. Then Comes 4.15 and it’s all into the main room with still over 500 there to hear Malayka do her now traditional last set. Many get a little emotional and generally all agreeing this was the best yet.

Sunday, by this time the heart and head is willing, but the rest of the body not so. To hell with it, let’s do it all again, so to ‘Soul N’ Sausage’ the allday breakfast and shenanigans. With the injection of even more DJ’s Edu Movin On, Bjørn Espen Berg, plus any of the previous still standing, the day carried on from one noisy moment to the next, all a bit of a tradition now, but lots of fun. And then Bamberg 10 was over, goodbyes were said and people started their journeys and in some case very long journeys home. A massive success because all those people have made the effort to come in ever larger numbers for the past 10 years. See ya all next year as we start the second decade.
