>>> LETS MAKE IT A GOOD ONE <<<
MANY THANKS to DEAN for quietly giving us a progressive alnighter, cheaply and with no politics. Insidently its Deans birthday, thats another reason for you all to come and say good bye.
Message from the Family of Derek Allen
I know Derek would have been both touched and amazed at all those who came to the funeral, especially so near to Christmas. He would have been suitably embarrassed at so much attention. I am so sure he was watching especially when the sun shone through the window near the end of the service. I am extremely grateful to those friends who arranged the venue and the food afterwards. Derek is irreplaceable in our lives; he loved his family and adopted my relatives as his own. Iam sure, by the thoughts that have been expressed over the last month that many of you will remember him for quite some time to come. He was a kind, thoughtful, honest and gentle man who loved his music and will be greatly missed. He was taken too soon and I cannot imagine my life without him. Paula Allen

All roads led to freakoutville then I rang Doyles to see if upstairs was anyway ready yet. "No but weve just bought pub next door, can let you have their function room" And so it was the faithful trundled into yet another temporary venue albeit right next door to our "home". A packed location, typical Dublin party mood we got on with it. Got home soberish, forgot keys, Donna at relatives i decided best i broke a window. Long story...
And on a rare weekend with two nights of soul we had a charity night in the Commercial Rowing Club SN + McScoots. Early on it was Scooter sounds gratiously making way for the Northern. Great to see Paul Mulholland&Paul Grant in the mainroom and some dinosaurs making their way upstairs to the modern sounds of Ross, Joe, Brian&more... this was a feel good night with no barriers. Sorry Paddy Kane you didnt win the raffle!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Soul Source, Excellent site!
Its brilliant to see the same level of passion energising the scene these days as was apparent back in the late 60s and early 70s - an age which I classify as the golden era of Northern Soul. Congratulations on a first-class site!
I hope you will continue to attract a new generation of enthusiasts to the cause. Please keep up the good work.
Yours Sincerely,

Maybe of interest? Delayed news of an exhibition at Wigan History Shop The Web site 24hourmuseum has a feature on this show, full details along with a few photos can be found at the link below
The exhibition charts the rise of the venue through its early days as the Empress Ballroom, a major dance hall in the town, through to the Northern Soul era when between 1973 and 1981 Wigan Casino became the place to be seen.

Vol. 1 of the Complete Motown Singles release
Clipped from the above, news of a "Vol. 1 of the Complete Motown Singles" release coming soon
For this current member of that demographic, the big news is this: Early next year, the greatest pop music ever made will finally be getting the respect it deserves. A division of Universal Music called Hip-O Select is releasing "Vol. 1 of the Complete Motown Singles." Its a six-disc set that compiles, in order of release, the A side and B side of every single released on the various related labels -- Motown, Tamla, Gordy, Soul and others -- from 1959 to 1961, more than 150 tracks in all.It will be followed a few months later by "Vol. 2," and then, periodically, by more sets, each collecting a years worth of single releases, concluding in 1972, when Motown officially left Detroit.
Cherishing a treasureIf you know where to look, you can find illegal collections of Motown music, some duplicating albums that have never been released on CD and others collecting rare tracks that periodically have become new all over again in English dance clubs (many of which have been hosting what they call northern soul nights for years).
But except for the endless greatest hits collections and movie soundtracks, Motown has been ill-served by the many hands it has moved through............

Excerpts from the Introduction
This photographic project grew out of a conversation with friends at the Twisted Wheel reunion all nighter in Manchester during the summer of 2001 when we tried to recollect what had happened during the 1960s&70s soul scene. It became abundantly clear that I had either lost or misplaced any documentation about this time. Only scant evidence and information existed In the form of battered and torn membership cards, posters and faded photographs. Apparently, no detailed photographic record had been compiled as few people had a camera or were Interested In spending their precious (dancing) time recording what was happening around them on the soul scene'. It was as If an Important element of the working-class youth cultural explosion of that time had vanished from view. Moreover, it was no coincidence that this was part of the attitude of the soul community, preferring obscurity to mainstream in order to keep the scene 'underground' indefinitely.
On leaving the Twisted Wheel Club, by coincidence we met Dave Godin and persuaded him to pose for a photograph In front of the original building. As I photographed Dave and other original soulies in front of this now legendary site I realised that although I could only have memories of the original soul scene, what I could do was compile photographs of the scene as it is now for posterity. The current soul scene was just as exciting and the re-emergence of soul venues needed to be recognized.
Initially my main objective was to record a year In the life of the British soul scene, but due to my full-time commitments at work and home I began to realise I might need to spend two years on the project. I decided to start the project on December 27th 2001 at the Ritz all-nlghter in Manchester. My main objective would be to visit as many soul venues as possible in order to provide an overview of the soul scene in the UK.
During these two years, Ive have met some amazing people. I have rekindled old friendships, been introduced to new friends and contacts. My photographs reveal that soul folk have an impeccable taste In music and sometImes a bizarre and eclectic dress code. They have an astonishingly detailed knowledge of soul music and an obsessive loyalty to the authenticity and pedigree of the music. It is difficult to define their clothes and fashion sense as it ranges from sharp, clean mohair suits (for mods) to extra wide Wigan baggies'. The choice partly depends on the particular strain of the music they favour. Age and social background appears to be Irrelevant and a strange etiquette exists as the appreciation of the music overrides differences of opinions. At a large soul weekender, such as Cleethorpes in June, you will find people from all over the world. The audience for the Velvelettes at their Cleethorpes concert consisted of visitors from Japan, Sweden, Germany, Spain, USA and so on. The full cross-section of society exists at a big soul event You have old, young, able, disabled, children white, black, asian... mods, suede heads, skin heads, northern soulers, rastas. modern soulers... tattooed builders, factory workers, lorry drivers, housewives students, teachers, doctors, lawyers, ex-prisoners...
Some of the 'soulies' have been going to soul venues, non-stop since the 1960s whilst others are young and completely new to the scene. Perhaps its the atmosphere which attracts both young and old. When you enter a venue, particularly at the large events such as the King Georges Hall in Stoke. the atmosphere is electric. With the quasi religious fever in the air you notice many dancers have intense, trance like expressions. Soul appears to be a religion and devotees express their beliefs out on the dance floor In an Infinite variety of ways. Music is the focal point of their faith.
I hope 'Keeping the Faith' makes a small contribution to showing how in 2004 thIs uniquely British Soul Scene continues to flourish.

I was going to have a rant this morning, about missing Lightwater last
night, due to waiting in for the Gasman who never turned up!
Then I read this, it puts my problems into perspective.
Even though I never met Derek Allen, my thoughts and condolences go out

found him to be a very genuine man and always very polite.

DIES SUDDENLY
I didnt know Derek well, only saw him DJ a handful of times, and spoke
to him a couple of times. However despite this, I still feel compelled
to post a message to say how sad Im that the Northern scene has lost a
great bloke, and to pass on my condolences to Dereks family and
friends. Everytime I was lucky to witness Derek DJing I had a fantastic
time. As well as playing top tunes, I loved the actions and little
dances he did on stage along with the music. It was great to see a DJ
enjoying
the songs with as much enthusiam as us out on the floor. Once, when hed
finished a set, I told him how good it had been and how much Id enjoyed
it. Modestly he struggled to accept the praise and seemed very
embarrassed by it. A terrific bloke, and nice to encounter a DJ without
a huge ego. A sad sad loss, Derek will be missed by many. Rest in peace
Derek.

another. He was to me one in a million.i never saw this man looking down
in the mouth .he constantly wore a smile and his smile was
contageuos, even if you were not feeling on top of the world yourself
,as soon as you saw derek with that smile ,dancing away behind the
decks he lifted your spirits without saying a word.always good for a
chat and a giggle .he had great humour .we will certainly feel the loss

Really very sad to hear of the loss of one of the
nicest blokes ever. I met Derek for the first time about 10 years ago
when I hadnt long been back on the scene. Seeing Derek with all his
enthusiasm dancing behind the decks and entertaining us all is a great
everlasting memory. I feel very honoured to have stood beside him djing
and shared some great nights over the years.
Derek you will be sadly missed, all the best mate. Hammie

Derek was a cracking DJ who never really realised how accomplished he
was at what he loved doing. He had a way of getting the most reticent of
crowds up on the dancefloor enjoying themselves to the full. His musical
taste, foresight, delivery and friendly unassuming character are the
very qualities of soul scene legends. We will remember Derek with the
utmost respect as a true gent and lovely bloke who shared his knowledge
and talents so enthusiastically on our scene.

I cant really add any more but just agree with every one elses comments
. Both me and the wife were devastated when we were told last Sunday. I
cant remember Karen ever sitting down to any record he played. Derek
played a major part in putting Nottinghamshire back on the Northern
Soul map. He will be sadly missed.

Lou Pride Heart attack now recuperating
Lou had arrived in Switzerland to perform and luckily had the heart attack whilst he was in his hotel so David Earl president of Lous label Severn records was able to rush him to hospital in Luzern where he underwent surgery to place two "stints" near his heart. After just over a week in hospital lou was allowed to "come home in the mornin" and fly back to Chicago last week where he is now recuperating. oLus prognosis is very good and with care, exercise and no back drops he is expected to make a full recovery. lou had just finished recording a new album for Severn records and will now put the finishing touches to it in February for release in the spring 2005.
Anyone wishing to send a get well message to lou can do so via myself at robw@yelp.fsnet.co.uk and i will forward them on to Lous management team.

CICERO BLAKE ACCIDENT
The accident happened as Cicero was returning from church in his home town of Chicago. He had been booked to perform at a club in St. Louis, MO. on the Saturday. Following surgery, Cicero is recovering in Mt. Sinai hospital where his condition continues to improve. Grapevine consultant Edward Keyes visited him and was happy to report that Cicero was feeling hungry. "Thats a good sign," said Keyes. "Cicero is optimistic and he wants to get back to work as soon as possible." Grapevine Music Group will continue with the release of Ciceros album Here Comes The Heartache.
The scheduled release date is December 13th. News of the accident was received just as the Grapevine staff were finishing the liner notes for Ciceros forthcoming album. In his notes, Paul Mooney had described Cicero as a "survivor", having recently battled against a serious illness. "We really believe Cicero is a survivor," said Mooney. "And of course we all pray that he makes a full and fast recovery." Messages can be sent to Cicero care of the Grapevine office.

Look Back at Middleton Civic Niter Jan 05
Billed as a " Allnight Tribute To Carl" it certainly seemed like it was going to be a nighter thats a bit different from the norm. Not sure how many djs were lined up for the 3 rooms but am sure if added up all on the dj rotas the total could well be over 30. And as the night was a tribute all were choosen by Carl.
Nite kicked off with a mixed minibus load of welsh/irish types turning up at start, first time at this venue and have to say its a great venue, 3 rooms, main room had a upper tier sort of thing which housed all the vinyl vendors and a bar, and overlooked the main floor area.
Little John got things going, Liz Foster, Steve Thomas, Shute, Danny D, Mace and more followed, each pushing out some great sounds, as said there were loads of djs on, two German guys one after the other, continued the flow, think was Michael Fuchs who pushed out the Geno Wahington "Ive been hurt by love" which sounded great (clip is up in cheap affordable section) Rob Thomas hit us with the likes of tremendous "you made a man out of me" Scott English(associated acetate), Switch Around and also Soul Inc -Your Proposal (in sounds)to name a few, Roger Banks, Andy Dyson/Andy McCabe doubling up, Paul D and John D did the one before Carl W took over to finish the night.
The other room was kicking every time went in,first walked in to catch Fred Kohl finishing his set with "my propsal" - soul inc (twice in one night in different rooms was a bit of a bonus to me -up in sounds sounds) with Big Mick taking over after that, Pete Coulson had place jumping later on and of course there must have been a fair few other djs doing the job just as well thru out the night
Modern room was downstairs, not sure how this went, as only went in at the start there was a fair few in, but had word that numbers were down later though.
In between all these rooms had nice lounge sort of layout along with a cafe kiosk thing, and if spent any time knocking round these parts were treated to Maria walking up and down between rooms ensuring that all the djs were in right place at the right time, and managed to achieve this 100% hiccup free.
7am back in main room think said in an other recent look back that Carl is defintely finshing things off on a high, and yep hes still doing that with a great set, of course teardrops went down well, at home plans meant had to leave before the final and so we left with the survivors playing which seemed apt.
Dunno how many online types bumped into, but was a laugh and there was a fair few, too many to count or namecheck.
As said was a most enjoyable nighter, great venue, as a tribute the different approach worked well, numbers wise went up and down through out the night, also heard that Lowton was good one as well
Thanks to Steve for lift and thanks to Geoff and all the organiser types involved in putting on the event and of course Carl and Maria
Hit rate for photos was low, only the two up here were really usable - dark, flash, and crap being reasons others not used
one below is quite a rare one, as it shows Danny awake :-)

New Century DJ Timings and Lineups
FROBISHER REVIEW - 30TH OCT 2004
So, having seen Steve make it through to the next phase of the X Factor, we decided to make a quick dash down to the Frobisher.
The October edition brought us those two young gents from Todmorden: Tim Brown and Ginger Taylor.
Arriving around half-nine, we found Dave Box, one of the resident DJ’s, doing the early shift. A few of the tunes he played in this hour included: Topics, Enchanters, Dynells, and a good raft of 70’s: Newcomers, Paul Thompson, Bill Harris, Charisma Band, and Channel 3’s The Sweetest Thing. That was one that Fred really enjoyed, and at the time it was played he was singing the praises of his DJ partner, by saying what a fantastic record collection he had built up over the years. Next one was the electrifying Cashmeres – What Does It Take To Win Your Love. A few versions of that have been played over the years, but I still rate the Junior Walker original as the best, and there’s a version by BJ Thomas which is also very good. Dave played the ever popular Because Of You by Jackie Wilson to a full dance floor, and then handed over to Ginger at around 10.30pm.
Ginger played a mixed bag, including a few 70’s, a bit of Motown, some oldies, and a scattering of more recent tunes. He kept the dance floor busy through the hour, playing: Carstairs, Futures, Phyllis Hyman, Joy Lovejoy, Harold Melvin, Norman Johnson, Temptations, Marvelettes, Garland Green. The highlights for me had to be Rita and the Tiaras (Classic and rare oldie), Bill Bush (dance floor packer), Buddy Miles (underplayed 70’s), and the Hamilton Movement (great tune).
Tim took over from Ginger, and his highlights were just about everything really. Vanguards, Patrinell Staton, Soul Communicators, Delegates of Soul, Bobby Rich, and Sam Dees' alternative take on Lonely For You Baby. Also, Deep Dark Secret, Dee Dee Sharp, and Frankie Beverley – Because Of My Heart on Rouser. And he played more requests than you can shake a stick at: Robert Tanner, Fluorescent Smogg, Hayes Cottons (Black Wings), Mac Staten, and, for me, Little Willie Foulk – Look Into My Heart. Tim finished off with JJ Barnes’ RicTic relic – Please let me in, leaving a perfect platform for Fred to follow on with an hour of oldies.
Dave finished it all off, keeping the crowd dancing until the end, and by that time, the drink had kicked in big style, and he managed to get me on the dance floor, shuffling about to the Ascots – Few Feet From The Gutter and Jimmy Wallace – I’ll Be Back.
As usual, the mix of music through the night catered for everyone, making it another enjoyable night. I’ll leave you in the hands of the Lager Lout for his summary.
JB
Before I start on this, I’d just like to say that in no way is this a piss-take, as I’ve known Tim for years and have always regarded him as a good friend. So, really, it’s a tribute to the excellent 60 minutes worth of music he played that night. Knowing Tim, I reckon he’ll enjoy it rather than hitting me with a law suit!
To get the gist of this, if you know that great 70’s track by Benny Hill, then you’ll see where I’m coming from::::
You can hear them old beats pound
When you’re on the stomping ground
And the clattering of those wheels of steel
As they spin round and round
Chorus:
He marched into the Frobisher
Rare Soul wrote on his chest
His name was Brownie and he was the
Finest DJ in the West
Now Brownie loves his Northern
And a bit of Modern too
Not right fussed on the all night sesh
Prefers an eight till two
The crowds were always good to him
And I mean it most sincere
That’s why Brownie gets his booking there
Same time every year
(Chorus)
Now Brownie on arrival
Made a beeline for the bar
All the way from Todmorden
Half hour in the car
He tempted us with his Lewis Clark
And his tasty Bob and Fred
And when they heard the plight of his Larry Wright
It nearly knocked ‘em dead.
They all swooned over his mega tunes
And he said if you see me right
You’ll have drum rolls in the morning
And stompers through the night
We knew once we’d sampled his first half hour
That he’d got top notch stuff to play
Thanks from all the Frobisher
You’ve made our flipping day.
They won’t forget Brownie,
‘Cause he’s the finest DJ in the West.
Look forward to seeing you next year Tim.
Cheers – The Lager Lout.
From John – I liked it lout, but you’re gonna have to get out more. I’ll agree with everything in the song, but point out that I think you’ve cheated a bit as the records mentioned in it he didn’t play that night.
Lout – OK, fair point, but he could have played ‘em all on another night. Plus I don’t have the writing talents of Holland/Dozier/Holland or Smokey Robinson.
John – Yep, yer right – get the beers in!
