About The Event

,The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests.

Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon.

Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL.

In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor.

We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

Absolutely fantastic night, haven't been for a couple of months due to other commitments, but it's like I've never been away ... Always feel at home.

Great friendly crowd, dancefloor was outstanding and the music was just the very best... I am now paying with sore feet and legs.

All the djs played brilliant sets with a great selection of across the board soul, how it should be 😊

Thankyou again to all you guys for another fabulous evening at Ashton

See you all again soon .... Well Friday at Wolfies 😁😁

Another Great night at Ashton Ukrainian Club, considering we had an enforced date change and a super busy Soul Event Calendar, we had an amazing response from The Ashton Faithful!!

Apologies in advance I didn't catch some of Phil Dunn ever excellent opening spot, pesky speaker went out, no fear The Caped Crusader Simon "The Fixer" Ingham sorted the tech issues, fresh speaker and we were off and running!!

Stu "Shovel" Cheetham made a welcome return and didn't disappoint Vanguards "good times" and The outstanding Percy and them "trying to find a new love" Awesome stuff, not forgetting a real blast from the past "Funky Nassau"

Tony Mac deffo lived up to "The Silent Assassin" Trends "thanks for a little lovin" a non too shabby opener Gerri Hall, Troy Dodds, Sheila Ferguson "and in return" to name a few, outstanding set sir!!

I followed and tried to mix it up kicking off with Little Charles "talkin' bout you babe" especially for Natalie Nicholls resplendent in luminous Fred Perry Apparel very classy KTFPP x I'll post a playlist later, I'm sure Mike Roche will have a more detailed recall of some highlight spins on the night!!

Headlining it was a pleasure to have Baz Maleady  back behind the decks a real mixed Bag Hayes Cotton "black wings" Big Bud Harper, check out the video Houston Outlaws "ain't no telling, The Differences WOWSER The dancefloor loved it!!

Our other caped crusader Chris Churm was multi tasking sound engineer, Dyno Rod Technician( you had to be there) and still had the wherewithal to produce a stunning closing set!!

Keep your eyes on here and The Soul Source event page thread for our May date, when we return to our normal third Saturday Slot!!

It always amazes me how a mix of new faces, die hard regulars and frequent visitors invariably hits the sweet spot for numbers, guaranteeing a great atmosphere.  Ashton is like a warm soulful blanket that envelops you for the whole magical evening.

I think Phil Dunn was playing The Cavaliers when we arrived. His quality set concluding with Carolyn Crawfords  masterpiece ‘ My Smile Is Just a Frown’.

Stu Cheetham entertained us with a real mix, that included the funky horns of Dolly Gilmore. The magical feel good sound of Bobby Taylor’s ‘I’ve Been Blessed’. And the banging beat and sweet harmonies that is Al Gardner’s ‘Sweet Baby’.

Tony Mac created a dilemma for me,  I wanted to dance to every tune, but a man must know his limitations. His set featured a plethora of top tracks, including The Soul Communicators, Troy Dodds and the incredible The Bitter & The Sweet ‘I Won’t Have Any Babies For You’.

Ashtons very own Mick Howard gave us the tune that has everything:  quality production, horns, strings and flawless harmonies, the deceptively inexpensive track by The Dramatics ‘ Your Love Is Strange’. Top tunes all the way, Rudy Love, Celeste Hardy, Will Collins and Willpower. And a favourite blue eyed track: Bobby Sampson ‘Don’t Leave me’,  deservedly getting more plays.

BazM gave us a typical stellar set; a real blast from the past with the Determinations ‘ Bing Bong Goes My Heart’, The Masqueraders, T.S.U Toranadoes ‘ A Thousand Wonders’ and the superb Dynells. ‘Call On Me’.

Chris  took his usual closing slot, his choices included The Natural Four, The Ascots and concluding with some Detroit magic,  the peerless Volumes ‘ Ain’t Gonna Give You Up.

Thanks to Chris et al for another great and Souful evening.
