About The Event

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2025 we're looking once again to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests.

Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon.

Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL.

In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor.

We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

With so many events and the Mediterranean weather at the moment, we did think it would be a quieter night, not a bit of it, a busy turnout and yet again more new faces joining The Ashton Faithful, to find out what we're all about!!

Got to say the music was a real eclectic mix of all that keeps us coming back for more!!

I enjoyed warming the night up, playing a few from "the back of the box" as they say. I'll post a playlist later!

Nice to see Steve Skopek back behind the decks, playing a nice Eulogy for our good friend Ted Massey Larry Wright "it's ok with me" sounded the business, as did the Philly Classic John Leach "put that woman down"

Another Returnee DJ to Ashton John Hilell played for me the highlight of the night for me, some stone classics Calvin Grayson "love just began" Arin Demain "silent treatment" and some class 70s dancers Mixed Feelings "Sha La La" Second Resurrection and many more!!

Si "The Fixer" Ingham followed and WOWSER Honey Bees "let's get back together" Hopkin Brothers, Celebrities "I choose you baby" Paris "sleepless nights" and the sublime Henry Boatwright Flip!!

Then when you thought it couldn't get any better, it did, take a bow Chic Mullineux 2 plus 2 "look around" The Delites "lover" and Dave Evison was back with us, after a really nice review last time. The dancing DJ never changes treading the boards to Pure Quality like The Nurons "all of my life" respect mate!!

Chris Churm finishing "a night to remember" Ascots "a few feet from the gutter" Bottom + Company Jackey Beavers "a love that never grows cold" and many more !!

We have an amazing line up for our Mid Summer Madness event on Saturday June 21st flyer attached !!

Once again many, many thanks for your continued support, it really is appreciated !!

Another gathering of the faithful at the altar of fine Soul music.  Ashton Ukrainian club as a unique atmosphere, that needs be savoured. Fabulous music played to an appreciative and knowledgeable crowd with a very receptive and lively dance floor.

Mick Howard had the warmup set.  He was playing Jimmy Norman’s ‘Family Tree’. as we arrived. Closely followed by The Phonetics with Willie Hutch on lead vocals ‘Pretty Girl’.

Steve Skopek was up next with a varied set: Barbara Jean’s masterful ‘Why Weren’t You There’. Several R&B tracks including Dolly Lyon ‘Palm of Your Hand’.  Not forgetting The Topics’ harmonious gem ‘Hey Girl (Where are you going)’.

John Hilell gave us some classic oldies in Arin Demain and Tamla Lewis, a few popular dance nuggets The Hyperion’s and Silky Hargreaves. Then spiced things up with Brand New Faces and Barbara Lynn’s uplifting ‘Moving on A Grove’.

Simon Ingham provided a smorgasbord of quality, starting with Johnny Gilliams masterpiece ‘Room Full of Tears’.  A series of box office tunes including Mac Staten, Hopkins Brothers and The Honey Bees.  And new to me, Major Lance ‘Wait Til I Get You in My Arms’, which is the flip to ‘You Don’t Want Me No More’.

Chick Mullineux kicked off with a dance favourite from a lifetime ago that still sounds fantastic, The De-Lites ‘Lover’.  His set also contained The Admirations, The Cairos and Shirley Turner ‘I Wish You the World of Happiness’. An unfamiliar but excellent track, Two Plus Two ‘Look Around’. And a tune with soulful girlie harmonies that is rarely heard out, The Softiques ‘Two Kinds of Boy’.

Chris Churn took his usual place with the closing set. Starting with a real dance classic in Emanuel Eskey. Then keeping the dance floor bouncing until the end with quality tracks that included The Brooks Bros and Jackie Beavers ‘A Love That Never Grows Old’. Chris brought another fabulous night to a close with the Soulfully powerful ballad Ray Pollard ‘The Drifter’.
