We have all seen lookbacks where people have described a night as "Across the board,something for everyone".

What does it mean?.....does it mean each dj plays 2 or 3 tunes that do it for YOU? and the rest of their sets are just not happening......so are you only getting 10% of your night?

Or does it mean one dj,s spot did it for you and the rest of em,s spot did not.....so are you still only getting 10% of your night.

My thought.....if there's only something for you and not the whole night.............then there's somethng wrong or are we only mean,t to enjoy a little bit of the night? as it would seem. atb Dave

personally for me across the borad is Northern, R & B, crossover and Modern. any other style i wouldn't dare play. Disco you joking not sure you want to hear Rose Royce and the like.

i know all the venues here mostly to what is played Soul Ole and Right Track try to mix it up, we even had Soul ole once try a new approach with 2 half hours of R & B and 2 half hours of Modern and rest was oldies mainly apart from at the end where Dave Forrest plays a few oldies but really loves the modern he plays to end say.

Thats the point steve people want variety within one genre........where the something for everyone crowd/venues go wrong is variety across the genres.......it don,t work.....ya just get going and then some other floaty sh*te comes on.......bit like a tennis rally in a wimbledon final....back and forth it goes and we're all loving it,then the ball goes out (change of genre/style) and everyone has a collective groan. atb dave

In your opinion it doesn't work, for plenty of others it does work. If it is danceable it will work, Stafford last week showed you can play the genres and make it work, dancefloor rammed all night. I agree with floaty stuff (what genre you referring to though?), that is no good at an all-nighter, you need dancers although the odd slowie when programmed right can and does work. The venues that cater for the down tempo stuff is a different matter....don't go if you don't like what you hear. Not every venue is put on to satisfy you, me or anyone else but there are venues out there that cater for the taste of each of us.

As for the change in styles that depends on how good your DJ is. There are DJ's who can change the style and still make the set flow and work for the dancers.

i think promotors should stick to one thing or t'other. i don't think atb nights/nighters work personally the tunes are all over the place, uptempo then midtempo followed by a bit of disco [modern] theres no real flow going on. places that seem to do ok are the ones that stick to one thing [stoke uptempo oldies, thorne crossover,modern, bidds r'n'b ] etc, etc.... then people know what to expect and will go the do's that are playing their kind of tunes.

Hi Dave.You want to try and get to upfront venues instead of hanging around the ATB/SFE nites.

Since the music night I co-run is called "All Things Soulful", then I suppose this is one thread that I really should post a reply to.

We run what could be termed an across the board night. 5 hours or so, once a month on a Saturday of tunes from the 6ts to new releases. The philosophy being that a lot of people either like soul from all eras, or are open minded enough to listen to them and then decide. Other attendees prefer their Northern/Modern/New tunes or whatever, and by mixing it up, they know that they don't have to wait long before hearing something that floats their boat. If you want a whole night of one particular genre, and hate others, then this isn't the gig for you, but then the title sort of tells you what to expect.

Does it work? Well, we've been paid well to do it for over 5 years at the same venue, so we must be doing something right.

i attended an all nighter last year that i throughly enjoyed and thought it epitomized ATB a great mix of music from early sixties to present day there was definitely something for every one that night (soul wise) i also thought that the last Gloucester allnighter is a good example of an ATB night

I haven't trusted venue flyers for years now because they more often than not use language that is designed to fill the place rather than let you know what is going to be played.

As much as it pains me to admit I kinda ping every "Soul Night" to be playing the dreaded "List" of floor fillers that I admit to liking but I just don't want to pay to hear and I certainly don't want to drive the length of the country to listen to some thing I can hear across town.

"Across the board" appearing on a flyer may have at one time been genuine but now days I think it's a complete con by promoters who haven't got the records or the DJ's.

Slipping one or two tracks in-between the same old same old aint "Across the board".

I would love the promoters to be more honest and I think that it is only the Allnighter promoters who dare to be honest because the Allnighter crowd when they vote with their feet the impact is a lot more painful than says a local soul night with a captive audience.

There is such a disparity between the Allnighter scene and The Soul nights that is as oil and water now days so lots of these comments don't fall between the two very different scenes.

It may be acceptable and quite the norm to see "Across the board" appearing on a flyer for a soul night but an honest description is demanded for an allnighter less we stop attending.

read something else then, no one forces you to read topics. Your doing just as much moaning as others you are moaning about.

I don't think it's as simple as a tongue in cheek, leave it to "Soul Police" when people are being asked to part with their hard earned money, I think its just common courteous not too fluff up a venue when there is little to no effort to play any thing other than the tired old formula.

Like I said it matter not too much at a local event if there is a few pokies being told on the flyer, or does it?

I like to think that we have some corking allnighters to choose from and we pretty much know in advance what kind of chef is serving up the dish even if we aren't sure of the flavors until we taste them, this is what the Nighter scene want and I dare say that if we as a traveling customer group ever felt really and truly cheated by a promoter then I hope that a lynching would ensue? At the very least no one would return?

We don't need to go as far as an ingredients list, we all know that there will be nuts but! A deliberate and misleading attempt to over sell is wrong and it takes the piss.

As far as not saying anything if you haven't got anything nice to say, well aint that the British way? To not say anything while the numbers dwindle doesn't do any one any good, yes there is a line between constructive and destructive criticisms but we should not put up with being tricked?

As far as the Northernsoul scene dwindling I say bring it on! The Allnighters of quality will survive as they have in the past, I personally would love to see the soul nights die a death and those unscrupulous promoters disappear back under the rock the hid under during the lean years.

I want quality not quantity, it's the quantity that is killing the scene, if the scene is dyeing and I don't think it is? It's maybe shedding a skin but that skin is dead, loads of top class nighters out there!

To those who play safe and whack on CD's then great if that's what the people want to hear but if you are charging punters to listen to the same CD as they did on the drive there then you should hang your heads in shame.

Across the board policy, lets hear from some of those who advertise as this and we will see what's really on offer because I think the term across the board has become synonymous with fibbing or playing safe.

That said, there are many punters who want nothing more than to dance to their old favorites, I admit to having a liking for this every now and again but I want to know what I am getting especially if I am to travel.

Flyers and promoters words mean nothing, DJ line ups and word of mouth are the only thing I ever rely on.
