Hi,

(Prompted by the other thread on magazines)... Probably my favourite publication of all time, of any kind was Derek Pearson's peerless, "Shades of Soul". A real labour of love, put together with such warmth, intelligence, humour and in the spirit of sharing knowledge.

Thing is, it used to come out at such irregular intervals. I finally lost track of it with Issue 29 (October 2000) so I assume that it is long defunct? Was that the last one?

It was so exciting in those pre-internet days, looking forward to the next one to arrive, unexpectedly... ("if a big red tick appears in this box your subs have run out please renew them")

Does anyone want to share any thoughts / reflections / memories?

(sorry for typos in title-can't work out how to edit them..)

I think Derek did at least one issue since I lived in my current apartment, and I moved here in 2004.

Think the last issue was issue 32. got them all and like you the best magazine going at the time.

He definitely did because I wrote some record reviews for it.

No idea when it was though.

Like you say, great magazine!

Indeed..

Was aasking Derek last week about the next issue  ..

Come on DP.... We all loved Shades of Soul..... A lot :hatsoff2:

As said above... Before the internet this kind of mag was just heaven and the wait for a next issue was like waiting for Santa as a child...

Not sure where my copies are, maybe lost in moving or something, any back copies for sale out there ???

Yep, big pat on back for Bradford's finest...y'all listen to him on the radio as well, right..his shows are as entertaining as the mags were/are!

The disc reviews I wrote for this fine publication between 2000 and 2004 are on my site, should you have a spare 5 minutes, a mug of tea and a few biscuits to hand...enjoy: >>> PRESS HERE <<<

Last issue I got was 32 - June 2006.

Best of the serious mags IMO.

Fun mag had to be the early Manifesto's...

Yep Derek is a good un.

One of my other fav reads is 'Soul Renaissance'.

Love the way Martyn writes... he doesn't give a hoot and tells it as he sees it. Great stuff

Bought nearly a whole collection of 'Shades Of Soul' quite a few years back now for £70....well worth it! Think I got them from someone on here???

Definitely my favourite of all those 'fanzine' style mags.

I bought it from the first issue, after Derek told me he was putting it out. Snapped up every issue after that. Great read that i looked forward to every few months!

A great read, I looked forward to every new issue, always informative, a must have fanzine in the pre internet days!

A pat on the back for Mr Pearson and all the various contributors to each issue :hatsoff2:
