i have been wondering about howard tate - because i hardly ever see his name mentioned on playlists or people's faves lists or anything. was he ever big among NS folks? i really like his work on turntable and verve (i even play out 'look at granny run run' - which my wife refers to as the 'viagra song'), but not the atlantic stuff so much.

maybe his t-table stuff was too funky? his verve stuff too bluesy? maybe its just too common (you can get all of his great singles for about $10 each on ebay)?

or maybe i am just getting the wrong impression (he is, in fact, a huge fave)?

just wondering, because i love his stuff and think he has one of the best male voices in all of soul music.

Check out 'Half a man' (Verve)- one of my favourite cheapies over the last 20 years! Yes you can still buy quality tunes less than a fiver! Hardly set the dance floor alight though (no Duffy videos here) ,more a thinking-mans-tape-swapping delight!

Must admit his Verve output was way better than the Turntable stuff that I've heard but all a matter of taste I suppose.

i agree that the verve stuff was a consistent higher quality than turntable (ain't nobody home, glad i knew better, etc) , but i love this t-table side!

i have these two by BB king.. dunno if howard just covered them or not. like both tunes though.

I read a few years back that he was found living down and out on the streets (Philadelphia?) so he either never made much money from all of his recordings or just blew the lot.

I'm sure the article I read mentioned he cleaned up his act and went back into the studios to record again.

Drug addiction put him in a homeless shelter. In the mid-90's was counselling drug abusers and the mentally ill.

Beginning of this clip he refers to his missing 30 years.

'baby i love you' gets some spins from me at go go children in bristol and think nige brown played it last year at bridgewater too...

what about 'night owl'..thought that was his most well known track on the uk soul scene.....sean parrys always got that in his playbox at go go ....on a british demo i think
