Posted April 9, 201114 yr Hi everyone Awesome tune - came out twice - label variations - different numbers - same/different mixes? Groovesville and Don Davis but recorded in Memphis or Detroit or elsewhere? Anyone shed any light please? Any info appreciated Cheers Richard
April 10, 201114 yr There are several differences between the two versions. The second one has extra backing vocals, the track's a bit longer, and - from memory - the 'I've Got to Keep My Love Away From You...' bridge repeats for a second time towards the end of the second version. I also seem to recall that the lead vocal was revoiced on 'version 2' I no longer have a copy of the second version, but I remember thinking that it lacked a lot of the stark menace of the first one, and that's why I didn't keep it. I am pretty certain that the whole track was recorded at United Sound in Detroit, or possibly at Tera Shirma. The strings and Jack Ashford's tambourine were certainly recorded 'up north', in any event. As you say, an awesome tune. I actually don't think the Dramatics ever cut a better one on Volt...
April 10, 201114 yr one of my favourite dramatics tunes too can't say i've noticed the difference before will listen carefully later. since i've been in love the other side of volt 4029 is great also. kev
April 10, 201114 yr Along with the Dynamics [mainly for their seventies stuff and the Dells] MY FAV OUTFIT,this is a really good read folks, obviously a very strong Davies/Hestor connection re the volt stuff but definetly Detroit -follow the link folks its a really good read !! https://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Dramatics.html BAZ A
April 11, 201114 yr I can't hear much difference in either version apart from the backing, which is the one I prefer.

April 11, 201114 yr Presumably, the UK stax release is Version 2 then ?? And agreed, great tune, thanks to Mr Brooks for putting me on to it Tony Both on Volt. I think it's the demo that is the one without the backing as I have an issue and that has the backing. So good when tunes that have been around for years and years get reactivated. What it's all about

So good when tunes that have been around for years and years get reactivated. What it's all about I have the Orange Volt, timed at 3.30 Steve has the Blue Volt timed at 3.00 ( not heard it yet) and he's also got the UK Stax-heard that at Burscough via Brookesy, but don't know the diff. ATB Tony
April 11, 201114 yr Top track, gonna give it a play when i get home, i forgot about it to be honest! Ste.

Sorry but I don't do British as a rule Edited April 11, 201114 yr by jumpinjoan

April 14, 201114 yr Had a spanish stax with a picture sleeve, great tune awesome on big sound system ;-))
April 15, 201114 yr Dramatics "Your Love Was Strange" (Volt 4029) time 3:00 released October 1969. My copy's a double sided WDJ; so I don't know what the flip side is on the issue; and I don't know if there's any difference in the mixes of "Your Love Was Strange" between the issue and/or white demo. dramatics - your love was strange - 4029 Dramatics "Your Love Was Strange" (Volt 4082) time 3:53 released 1972. Flip side "Toast To The Fool". And I don't know if there's any difference in the mixes of "Your Love Was Strange" between the orange issue and/or demo's. dramatics - your love was strange - volt Guess it depends on which version you hear first - I heard Volt 4029 first and thought it was truly awesome. Then I heard Volt 4082 and was slightly disappointed to be honest, it's good infact it's very good, but it doesn't come close to the first version on Volt 4029. Tony Rounce was spot on when he said he thought Volt 4082 "lacked a lot of the stark menace" of Volt 4029. To my ears Volt 4029 sounds more stripped down, more basic and less cluttered than Volt 4082. And nobody seem's to have mentioned there's over a 2 year gap between the two Volt releases so it made pretty obvious sense for Volt to "sweeten up" the song for it's seventies release.
