Hi everyone

Awesome tune - came out twice - label variations - different numbers - same/different mixes?

Groovesville and Don Davis but recorded in Memphis or Detroit or elsewhere?

Anyone shed any light please? Any info appreciated

There are several differences between the two versions.

The second one has extra backing vocals, the track's a bit longer, and - from memory - the 'I've Got to Keep My Love Away From You...' bridge repeats for a second time towards the end of the second version.

I also seem to recall that the lead vocal was revoiced on 'version 2'

I no longer have a copy of the second version, but I remember thinking that it lacked a lot of the stark menace of the first one, and that's why I didn't keep it.

I am pretty certain that the whole track was recorded at United Sound in Detroit, or possibly at Tera Shirma. The strings and Jack Ashford's tambourine were certainly recorded 'up north', in any event.

As you say, an awesome tune. I actually don't think the Dramatics ever cut a better one on Volt...

one of my favourite dramatics tunes too can't say i've noticed the difference before will listen carefully later.

since i've been in love the other side of volt 4029 is great also.

I can't hear much difference in either version apart from the backing, which is the one I prefer.

Both on Volt. I think it's the demo that is the one without the backing as I have an issue and that has the backing.

Les played a Volt demo at Burscough which didn't have the backing. Issues do have the backing (as far as I know).

Have looked in Refo for the different versions but can't see what's what - can anyone clarify those, or post up clips of specific versions to compare please?

My copy's a double sided WDJ; so I don't know what the flip side is on the issue;

and I don't know if there's any difference in the mixes of "Your Love Was Strange" between the issue and/or white demo.

Then I heard Volt 4082 and was slightly disappointed to be honest, it's good infact it's very good, but it doesn't come close to the first version on Volt 4029.

To my ears Volt 4029 sounds more stripped down, more basic and less cluttered than Volt 4082.

And nobody seem's to have mentioned there's over a 2 year gap between the two Volt releases so it made pretty obvious sense for Volt to "sweeten up" the song for it's seventies release.

I was going to mention the awesome flip side.....then realised it had already been mentioned, i got a bundle of these in Chicago some 10 years back, all the different takes, orange, blue, demo etc etc....Yep its an ok record.
