why is Interplay welcomed at a 'soul' night, but Esperanto is frowned upon ?

as far as im concerned, they're both as bad as the other. neither are remotely related to R n B/Soul in any form, yet Derek & Ray always fill a dancefloor, yet i darent spin The Grand Piano company for fear of a lynch mob!

The problem is that Northern soul didnt actually embrace soul music per se - It took whatever had a dance beat! If it was soul in its origin all the better but it was not exclusive!

Plenty of threads around to support this point too. Doesn't answer the question though does it? Weren't Derek & Ray white, dinner suited, piano players? I can't imagine the Grand Piano Company as anything different either! So, as neither record is a "Soul" record, why is it ok to play one, but not the other?

I used to love Esperanto in the big room at Wigan, it was around the time of an awful lot of instrumental tracks, 99% of which weren't soul records, wouldn't mind if I heard it in a lift/shopping centre either! (sure there's another thread for that somewhere too!)

Pity it somebody opened it in Wigan in the mid `70`s.

In terms of musicianship, interplay is quite a performance. I can imagine the muppet house band pulling it off quite well. rhona's theme for me is dreadful, though I do love sidra'a theme. I think one can appreciate them for what they are, northern instrumentals sadly out of favour. I love a good instrumental. davis & tyler, for example. wouldn't give esperanto house room...
