Really?

Isn't the label important too though? If not you may as well buy an acetate or a boot and scratch the label off. Who's to know it's the original without the label intact? (yes i know there are other ways of finding this out)

The label is as much part of the record as the grooves.

Course it is. I wouldn't buy the above record for a quid. Spot on Matt.

not to me .... the grooves count for me ... if i was looking for an expensive tune and someone was selling it with a knackered label for a discounted price i'd have it no question

Unless you like the music contained therein? This confirms my long held belief that collecting rare (soul) records is as much about the object as the music.

Bet you wouldnt say no to this one though Pete

Mate if I wanted a Lester Tipton with no label I'd get a Grapevine one and tear it off.

I honestly believe that anyone who buys a record like that is either very mad or has money to burn. Seriously, I'd pay maybe £50 tops for that.

I would be happy to pay £200 for a £2000 record, if

the label was fucked, as long as the vinyl was clean.

But I wouldn't be interested in paying £10 for a £100

record with a fucked label. Does this make sense?

Makes a lot of sense especialy if you are trying to complete the label and with L T that is the one most are missing. :)

Strewth, last winter I went past a shop in Chicago, western suburbs a few miles out, and nearly all of the records were like that , except Shades of Jade on Dore which was NM.

a mate of mine brought some back from New York which he bought off street sellers they have been stored in boxes face to face with no covers for years some good stuff but in absolute shite condition !

That opals 45 pic is far from the worst condition ever.

I actually bought the worst condition ever record here recently. The labels were 90% torn off completely, the vinyl was trashed, and there was a huge warp and a crack. It was described as "VG".

there was a seller selling 45s and advertising them all as katrina damaged. They were able to clean up the vinyl but the labels were ugly and had dirt that they were only able to partially clean.

might be the same guy , i think he's got 1,600 records up and it would taketoo long to go through em

no, i don't remember the id of the "katrina water" seller but that's not them. i think it was "leontgross" or something like that.

i bought some okeh demo's off some dealer in new orleans just after the hurricane , and never received them

he insisted he had sent them , i complained to ebay but nothing happened problem was these records were cheap

and i felt he didn't want to part with them at the price i won them for

anyway about two years after

he refunded my money and this time he said that the reason he never sent them was because they were water damaged in the hurricane

That has got to be the best so far only fit for covering a hole in the wallpaper LoL

why would anybody try to sell it ?

this one is funny just because of the grade.

the rest of the stuff is not even close to the worst ever on ebay at any time.

also, the worst ever has to be what you can find in chicago in real life. like from a flooded basement when all the records are stuck together in one big sandwich

There is a thread on this mysterious flooded basement somewhere on here !

you mean like every basement ever in the chicago south suburbs?

Back in the Wigan Casino days

Guys used to turn up with boxes of records with water damaged labels

and fantastic stories of where they were obtained !

Ballast in ships was another good one !

The records I'm talking about are like one big moldy sandwich of stuck together singles. If you peel them apart you'll get like no label and the record will be trashed independent of that. I must have something like that lying around, although I mostly throw stuff like that away so i'm not sure.

I bought a g condition record on ebay recently it was rare and I knew I was buying a hammered "playable" record..I paid like $20 bucks and I recieved the 45 cracked almost entirely in half just to put the icing on the cake..that was the worst conditon 45 Ive ever purchased to date..pissed me off..it came from italy and the crack was not mentioned..anyhow I think at this point its probably cheaper to keep it

bought a couple of records from a dealer in new york (i think) who now deals in autographs, mentioned his name on here before, records advertised as vg+ come in filthy nick packed in old cerial packets, the records i have bought have arrived safely, bought a record by ronnie and the ramblers, "woman of mine", filthy, scratched, dirty label and the outside edge of the record seemed to have been worn with a file or something resulting in a circular 45 with a 1" flat edge,

Any reason for it ?

Well they don't all start of plain white, some use old labels reversed so they look odd to start with. I suppose it's just general wear and tear but the really bad ones I've had all come from Jamaica and not the Uk so it must be to do with the weather conditions and the storage maybe? I mean some of them actually feel mouldy

maybe it's the same as in the US -- crates of records in flooded basements. I wonder what Jamaicans think about 45s given that a specific style of music is more strongly associated with their country. Like do most people think it's old crap to be thrown away or do they value them more?
