Is the term "Northern Soul" something that originated in the UK?

I had never heard the term until recently.

Is Northern meaning North America?

I am asking because I had read that Northern Soul may not be the "cream of the crop" soul records but more of the obscure recordings. Does Northern Soul as performed by white groups fall into a different category? Here I am 61 years old and much of this music I have never heard before.

The term originated in the Uk ( meaning northern england ) so no its not a north american term , i and thousands of others consider it the cream of the crop and yes it includes some white performers too

Hi Lorenzo,did i read you've got a doo-wop background? Most NS are records that didn't make the grade commercially for whatever reasons.Some were minor local hits in the US.Rarity of these 45's followed.Any similarity with the doo-wop scene.?

These tunes were picked up by us Brits,the phrase was coined,and the search for the Holy Grail of NS goes on.

I played in a soul band in 1967 - 1968 and had started seriously listening to soul music in 1965 - 1966. When a Man Loves a Woman was the song that hooked me. I got into DooWop around 1979 when I started buying some records and now I have a lot of mp3's. I was playing in a blues band in 1979 and the singer took me to a store that sold nothing but soul and DooWop records. I never looked back. I love soul but there is something about a vocal group that really gets to me.

all big northern tracks are now available on CD'S and all the classic northern oldies ' buy a few cd's and listen to them 'you'll be educated very quickly and you will feel at least 15 years younger

you probably should just read the wikipedia article on it. otherwise it's a loaded question as the main focus of this site is "northern soul", which has a complicated history and which has many aspects that people argue over.

I think I posted a link in my introductory thread. The record we cut has been played in clubs in the UK and Germany and is selling for about 100 pounds. I was just amazed the record reached you at all. I never thought it was great but it does have a nice dance beat.

The In Crowd: The Story of the Northern and Rare Soul Scene

by Mike Ritson (Author), Stuart Russell (Author)

It will give you a very good insight into the history of Northern Soul up to the end of Wigan Casino I think, 1981.

Another (and cheaper option) is The Story of Northern Soul by Dave Nowell. He is a member as well and was selling this for about 7 quid not so long ago.
