The Colin Curtis thread has got me thinking

some agree , some disagree so who on the scene has got the balance just about right to satisfy the majority at their soul gigs

My recent limited knowledge tells me that Ginger Taylor has just about the correct mix

and imho Before he retired Kenny Burrell was more to my liking

so who do you rate or not rate inline with your tastes ?

My nomination goes to a very talented Indian guy ,who manages to play a full hr set selecting records from his dj box ... That is actually placed on his head !

He's called Ballan Singh :)

That's funny because our Indian Butcher does the same thing while slicing a leg of pork

We call him Hamed , i'll get me coat !

One of the best sets I heard was in a tiny upstairs room at Middleton Civic about 7-8 years ago; the DJ was a girl with short bleached blonde hair and combats, and she rocked!! If anyone knows who she is, please could they tell me her name and whether she's still DJing?

She could have been concentrating on 7T's/modern stuff, but at an incredibly high tempo.

Whether you DJ or not, I think it's virtually impossible to collect records without starting to specialise... Isn't that why niters feature loads of jocks playing relatively short sets, so that the 'balance' is right?

Or am I talking shite? It wouldn't be the first time

i still think pete eccles has got the right balance, i have been with him after he as had a few pints= his balance was still spot on and he never fell over

i"ll get my coat

Heard quiet a few good djs, Ian gee seems to come out on top for me not heard him play a bad set yet. I like a dj that plays to the floor and not to his ego.

his brother does the same thing while cutting his lawn.....mow hamed

You make a very good point. Perhaps that's the key to a good night, getting the right balance of DJ's. If you're listening to stuff that just isn't your bag, at least you know in an hour or less, someone should be playing something different. I think it's hard to ask a DJ to play a good balance of stuff, as everyone's opinions/tastes are different.

his cousin is better, you know him, the one who ties his hair in a bow with rashers of bacon......mow hamed rashid

Hear, hear.............I hate a mish mash of music.........but we are all different and it's impossible to please everyone. So don't try and please everyone, just go for the people who have the same mind set as you.......that's what I did.

Better empty halls with a few true music fans in, than packed halls of people who are only there because their mates are, and they might get a spot next month.

Thought you were one of the few Len? :D:thumbup:

something for everyone.......thats called a sweet shop.............you only have to read the threads for some nighters on here....the talk is of funnily sweets, lovelymaple dance floors, posh venues, how friendly everyone is,how many s.sourcers they,ve met ect! ect!...never about the music..........at most venues it,s not important to the attendees and sadly thats the truth...

He he, you know I am mate, the majority of people want a 'party' though don't they?

All the best,

Len.
