Instant Monsters

Some songs take time to grow. Great DJ's like Richard Searling stick with them till the crowd catches on.

But sometimes a song comes along that is just so instant, so right, that it's an immediate monster.

Can I offer Mike Post's Afternoon of the Rhino for a start? I'll never forget the buzz on this the first time out at Wigan. Massive much requested dancer from the very first spin.

And Paul Anka too. That track went blazing within seconds.

Which ones stick in your mind?

Around 75 or 76 the song that went massive instantly at the EASC nighters was Out of My Mind by Rain which was initailly covered up but for the life of me I can`t remember who first spun it or name of cover.

The first night Suspicion was played at Stafford. I think by Guy.

It may well have been played somewhere before, because the guy opposite me on the dancefloor sung every word. It started with the not uncommon half a dozen people on the floor, and all of a sudden the place was mobbed, and it was cheered at the end like a footballer scoring a goal.

It may have lost some of its veneer on the scene as a whole, but to me, everytime I hear it I am back at the TOTW, and this barsteward is singing his head off with his eyes closed.

He came from Derby, so i asume he knew Guy, and possibly had a chance to hearit before Guy unleashed it on the floor.

You've touched on one aspect of the scene that is probably never mentioned. I'll come clean and admit; if ever I knew the words to to a monster sound, I was an insufferable git showing off and singing along.

"I'm smokin' more and enjoying it less, I get a whole lotta sleep but I don't get much rest...."

Now that's an idea for another thread....

I am sure this was one of the batch first played by Dave Withers (superhero) at one of Searlings SAS nighters in Manchester, good bit before Stafford I thought, also think it had also been doing the rounds on tapes for some lucky people (not me) at that time.

Still probably in my top 2 of the Motown unissued stuff.

I bought my copy for the sum of £8 becasue it had "some tape on the labels". When it turned up it had four strips of masking tape on each side. I was told it was the first copy in the country that Pep played cover edup. Anyboy know if this is true?

Couldn't agree more. Was at Blackpool when "Freddie Jones" got played out first. What a shock we had when it turned out to be The Coasters!

still never forget firts time rs spun fluffy falana at the casino - c/up as Robert L Martin ' Come Along And Go With Me' If I remenber right - pure magic!! Also 1st time he spun Eddie Parkers 'Im Gone' - 3 of us just stood and listened in disbelief - what a true piece of northern soul that will never be matched by any of todays standards!

Still love to hear from anyone with memories of first spins for the likes of Duke Browner, Sam & Kitty or even Sandi Sheldon (which I gather may have took some time to grow, poss regarded as too fast). Anyone know the truth of it?

still vividly remember hearing the anderson brothers on one of the legendary thursday night's at the blue rooms(sale mecca) only the priveleged few knew it ,the following week not an inch of room to be had on the dancefloor

Tony, I've a tape from Wigan late 74 when Footsee is being played, except it's not the one that came out - this one begins with the intro to "A little bit hurt", and the car horns in the middle are different, they changed all that when they released it...anyway you are right, it absolutely takes the roof off...but even more so is when Richard plays Tainted Love, must have been one of it's first spins, the clapping is unreal, what an atmosphere (as Russ Abbott would say)

Tainted love was a big sound at Va Va and the Mecca just prior to Wigan - and you're right about Footsee - Soussan added the car horns and speeded up the original. When Pye issued it they tried something similar but obviously the sounds were a little different.

Would LOVE to hear the Wigan tape. Is it good quality?

Yeah it's fantastic - I mean, truly fantastic. I've got about 80, half of which I taped myself, but this one while not the greatest aurally, almost certainly has the best atmosphere.

What about Mamie galore - It Aint Necessary. One of the first 'biggies' I think from the very early 70's. Can't remember where it was first played but I remember selling quite a few at the time with Bob Foster that he brought back from NY in '71.

attended the blue rooms virtually every week was a good testing ground for ian and colin there was many a first spin here prior to blackpool on sat night.
