I won't claim I discovered this because how can you discover something that's been put out on a contemporary LP, but I certainly 'distributed' it to all the tape collectors in the late 80's and salivated over it in print at the time - but sadly, I don't know if it's ever been played anywhere.  As far as I know, just an old tape swappers record.

I think it's one of the best records I've ever heard, that last part where she sings "Oh it's a long way" and the chorous respond...mind blowing.  I got a massive load of Spector outtakes with instrumental versions of many tracks, sadly there was no trace of this.  It was meant to be Darlene's first proper solo single and Spector changed his mind at the last minute.

    #123- "Stumble And Fall"/ "He's A Quiet Guy". That 45 was withdrawn and the catalog # was used for the Ronettes'

    "Walkin' In The Rain".

DARLENE LOVE - LONG WAY TO BE HAPPY - (INITIALLY UNRELEASED) - Darlene Love recorded this Gerry Goffin and Carole King composition in 1964, however it was not initially released. In 1964, The Blossoms (of which Darlene was one) landed a role as regulars on "Shindig!" which angered Phil Spector as he wanted complete control of the group. He didn't release any of Darlene's recordings at that time. [Recorded: June 1964]

I'm sure I read it in her own biography about them not releasing it in 64...found an autographed copy of it (the biography) in a little village shop round here a few years ago.  I think on the box set they have left the date blank but put it in 65.

Anyway who cares, it's a great track.

Well - it was Pete that put me onto this tune and one day in Manchester I found the Spector LP for buttons.

 

I've played it out at our little night in Bristol - one time to 7 people at a night and another time to an awe inspiring 75 or so.

 

Was reading the book about him at the time and how much of an egotistical genius he was so finding this made my day.

 

AWESOME tune - could play it all day to hear her voice, the drums, the insanely genius production and the end bit.

 

Off to play it now :-)
