Are we really gonna let it die with us?

Hopefully this will be a light hearted thread, and an enjoyable read (I think we need one!) I’m wondering if there has been any change in peoples’ views…

A young lady that attends our local events was telling us that she asked for a request to be played at another event, and was flatly refused - She didn’t understand why.

This girl is in her twenties, she has numerous tracks on her phone that she absolutely loves, and she simply wants to go out and dance to them. When she’s getting ready to go out she says she googles ‘Northern Soul’, and the ones she likes she runs to see what they are - A passion but without the records…

Is it time for the Soul Scene to move with the times, completely bypassing the record bit, and letting the music rule on its’ own?

Would anyone be brave enough to put on a ‘Download All-nighter’?

Would you attend such an event?

I understand the ‘rules’, and personally I will continue to ‘do what I do’ because I am from that era, but don’t you think it would be great to hear of a hall packed with 20 year olds dancing hard at the latest ‘Download All-nighter’?

All the best,

Len

  • If I decided to go to a nostalgia night up the road, I wouldn't care what the music was played on, I would be there for social reasons and a giggle. To hear the usual requests and top twenty played on

Vintage music scenes are inextricably linked to record collecting though, and for good reason. I dont think so many people would be attracted to the culture of DJing if it really was reduced to d

  • I think you’re about 10-15 years too late in posting that. There’s plenty of house DJ’s dj’ing from a USB stick that present new music and are creative. The format is irrelevant to that surely. In my

the big difference ive found between the two scenes, is that the house crowd want great music, the ns crowd want great specific records. groove vs song besed genges I guess.

True - and the groove and nature of house allows for more creativity. Off topic but i cant help myself :)

What is annoying is that a certain section of the house scene are copying the nostalgia scene - going to venues to hear DJs line Jeremy Healey  ($#!@) play the records from their youth  (with minimal mixing or creativity) moaning if new stuff is played, thus a load of past name DJs from the 90s heyday popping up doing nostalgia spots. Very familiar

Thats cos we're getting old Fossington.Nearly tempted to see Graeme Park again the the other day.

The fact that there are only 153 posts, some of which have drifted a long way from the initial question makes me think, and I seriously hope I'm wrong, that apart from the Nostalgia scene the answer is NO.

guilty as charged, I've put, park, whitehead, mccintosh on over the last couple of year but, all their sets mixed old and new. Parky was particularly creative digging up things from 86-96 we'd either completely forgotten or never heard before.

I thought he meant "I seriously hope I'm right" / so "NO" stands :D

No is good (If answering the thread title)

There's a difference right there though Geeselad - nothing wrong with a mix of old and new. In fact pm your venue and we might make a visit - Kev H wants to tag along too :)
