On more than one occassion just recently I have found myself at a do thinking, bugger me I only heard this 1/2 hour ago.

Is it just me, but I feel a bit let down and short changed when I hear the same tunes spun 2 or more times in one night.

Coz while they are playing that they could be playing one I don't know or haven't heard for years.

Is it lack of imagination, records or just playing Ultra Safe or what.

its not just you!

I get peeved if I hear too many of the same tunes week after week - and I don't get out that often

could be one of a few things ....

dj has arrived in time to do their own spot and has no idea it has been played .

been requested by someone who has just arrived and never heard it

paid a lot of money for it and is playing it no matter what

and this one has happened at a venue i have been playing at ..... they have their set list planned and haven't the brains to deviate

I tend to notice if something has been played previously during the night, but unless it's a crap record don't really care. I can remember similar things happening in the 'old days' when a record was being broken.

I used to think how hard can it be to just jot down what you play on a pad next to the decks so the next DJs can see what's gone before and avoid repetition..

That was untill i DJ'd a couple of times... Now i don't worry so much, although i get annoyed if i hear something three or four times.

IMHO its a total lack of respect for the paying soulie and to the previous dj`s, no matter how good a tune is i dont want to hear it twice in a night cos if i do its taking away another tune i could be listening too.

That was something I noticed this weekend at Belfast. I think it may have had something to do with the fact that everyone was there from start to finish but I can only remember one record played twice over the whole weekend....

The Dj's all complimented each other, made for an interesting and musically enjoyable time...

I always sit on the stage at tundred, and often Ady has given me a nudge and asked if anyone has played this or that.

Common sense to me.

I spose it dont happen too much for guys like Ady or Butch cos no-one else has their records but i think this a lesson budding DJ's could learn.

i always try and arrive at the start so it doesn't happen to me .... the one time i was horrendously late was belfast due to flight problems and the first thing i done was asked one of the promoters who knows my style if there was anything played i should know about ..

so promoters it's about knowing your dj's and dj's it's about asking the right questions if you cannot be there on time .

annnnnnnnnd if you hear a tune that is in your box , move it to the "i can't play that now " section

not keen on a deejay playing the same record twice on the night in different rooms either.

i can understand the repeated plays (in whatever room) if it's a new discovery, but otherwise it's a bit of a shame when it's just a big track getting played twice when there's so many thousands of records out there...

I try very hard not to repeat records that have been played previous to me playing my spot.......however flying in the face of what has been said before, I really don't think it matters.

Probably told this one before but it's a nice story.

Went to the Stafford re-union at Stoke.

Saw John Pugh stood in the doorway most of the evening with a bit of paper and a pen writting notes.

Nosey cow I am, I had to ask what he was doing.

Making a note of what's played, so I can do something different for my set.

As sooooo much was played two/three or four times that night,

John's set was a real breath of fresh air.....

As DJ's generally have a 100-200 count box with them it really shouldn't happen and I must say it rarely occurs here unless the DJ's have not been around for the earlier sets.

i don't like to hear any track being played 2 times. as i sometimes miss start of nighters if a song i like was played so be it. i expect to go and hear different songs

However if i ask for a song that might have been played before i got there i can't help if people moan about it being played.

there are so many records that can be played some songs being played every week is acceptable say 10 songs you hear every week but a night it's bad enough

In a one-roomer with the right DJ's (who should be there most of the night anyway) they know what's been played and can simply play summat else!

Well this is the philosophy at The Orwell anyway!

Although we often play unknowns/semi-knowns/things we're trying to break etc early doors and if they get the nod, they may get played later on!

Only time it gets a problem for us is when we have two rooms and a DJ's play both rooms. Cos they're not omnipotent they cannot know what happens for the length of time they're in t'other room!

I do like the idea of DJ's jotting down their set for this reason PLUS it's then easy to post playlists up on Soul Source after the event

that's exactly what I do - if I'm guesting I always get there early and if in doubt, because for some reason I couldn't get there right at the start, ask if something has already been played. In fact I tend to worry as much about whether I should even play records which I'm aware other DJ's there have in their boxes (from playlists I've read etc.)

I can understand it to a degree if someone is literally DJing across the country and bobbing in for an hour and then driving 50 miles to their next gig, but when it's someone at a 'local' night who swans in 15 minutes before their set, repeats tunes, then disappears 15 minutes after to go to home or to the pub, you know you're not going to ask them back again

This is pretty much what me and Ste aim to do at Heywood,

play the lesser known, new purchases etc. early doors.

Then get some better known stuff on to warm up the floor for the guests.

Then really knacker it up when the guests have finished

Hi Tony, this is one of mine and probably most peeps pet talking points at a nite out.

IMO,Nites are more crowd driven than ever, crowds know what they want to hear.

But in the early days to a certain extent, you got wot you got cos the DJ said so!!!.

There's loads of nites on, so lots of "competition".

Some dj's may think they have a reputation to lose, so much as they might want to play other stuff, it might not fit that nite/crowd.

Maybe taking a risk with sounds is the way forward, just like the old days!!!

After all where would the scene be without the risk takers,,,,Kev.

i hate it when they repeat sounds especially when these guys have hundreds if not thousands at there fingertips and play night owl twice in 60 mins i only dj locally and once its played to the back of the box it go's i do agree about new sounds being broken though

Would it ever be possible for the scene to go back to its original convention (ie BEFORE Wigan Casino) when only 2 or maybe 3 DJ's covered a whole event (rather than 12 DJ's with an hour each) ?

Old timers tell me the Torch basically had Curtis and Minshull , Levine for a while and one or two others, the Wheel only had one DJ all night didn't it? The Mecca was essentially Levine & Curtis for the whole night and so on and so on, Catacombs etc ...

Surely the single biggest drawback of the soul scene in its "revival" of the last 10 years is that every man & his dog who owns a box of records thinks they can be a DJ ? And not only that, most of them think they are promoters too, hence far too many nights going on...

Wouldn't you rather put your money and your trust in the hands of an Ady Croasdell or a Butch or a Soul Sam , for example, for the WHOLE night ??? Trusted collectors and DJ's who could take the scene in the right direction ?

Shouldn't DJ's really be made to earn their stripes ? Have a wide knowledge of all types of black music of all era's , an extensive collection , ability to work a crowd , good on the decks etc ?

Isn't the biggest problem of the scene today the fact that it lacks FOCUS ? ie too many DJ's , too many nights all over the place ? What's the solution ?

My ears tend to prick up if a tune gets a second / third play in a night , and agree / feel this is not a bad thing unless the record is dire . The repeat playing of a record during a night is linked to the record either being requested due to being popular , or the DJ playing it was unaware that it had been played in a previous spot to his / hers . If it is played again , so what ! Here I go into my Uncle Albert impression ..... " During the war " , I can remember certain name DJs playing a new tune two or three times during a spot in order to break it ..... and then it sometimes did not work . Stafford had a policy ( Guy Hennigan will concure on this ) of " three strikes & out " with a record : If the 45 failed to go with the dancefloor after the third play of it , it was put aside . It is interesting that many of the records now being played came from / under that Stafford " third strike &

out " category .

So how's a lesser known / "up and coming" dj supposed to "earn their stripes" if the same old Ady / Butch / Sam's only ever get booked then eh? Bit of a contradiction there i'd say.

But getting back to the original point.... it pisses me off too if I hear the same record twice in a single room venue.... specially if the second is within a couple of hours ofthe first spin. As Davie & others have said - it's lazy djing and shows lack of imagination. More understanderble if it's a two room place... but then a gain surely the idea of two rooms is to cover two different musical styles !

Johnny's Birthday do tonight should be fun with 900 dj's over 10 hrs in two rooms... still we'll all be so mashed we won't know who we are by the end - let alone what tunes have been played and by who!

and don't you think it's really funny when one person plays a record and it clears the floor, then another person plays it an hour or two later and it packs it (or visa versa)?
