here's a thing I have distanced myself from the whole soul thang...not been to many a venue ( apart from seriously soulful in bristol)...not a bloody clue what is being played currently......still buying what i like mind you...have a partner who has not a clue but kinda likes the music i play him... where currently should I dunk his uneducated head into the world of soul music??...i kinda miss the soul scene it soothes my spirits ( if it's the right venue lol)...where do you place your unknowing other...bearing in mind his significant other has no interest in oldies nights...

Thanks Steve You and your partner would be very welcome at Rugby allniter and yes, the Freestyle Room would float your boat but we also like to think the Main Room isn't your run of the mill oldi

Hey you. Hope you're not feeling nostalgic.  couple of venues to recommend. Rugby nighter. Freestyle room is right up your street. Bury town hall nighter. 2nd  room again right up your street.

  • It's worth trying one of the European weekenders as it would suit both of you A chance to hear a good mixture of music with some sight seeing thrown in

Bridgewater Soul Nights always a good one and close to you!!  Always hear a few things that don't get played elsewhere and great crowd and atmosphere!

I think anywhere that plays a mixture of old and modern would be a good place for someone to start, that way they get a taste of the soul scene from all spectrums and they can decide theirselves what they prefer.

Soul Train in Ramsbottom is good for a mix up of tunes, Different Strokes in Manchester (the best night out in the UK), Aberdeen Soul Collective (if you fancied travelling) and loads of stuff on in Europe most weekends - personally travel as much as possible to hear new stuff
