I would suggest taking him to a venue instead of doing a tape.

For those that know nothing about Rare Soul the only way they're really going to understand the tunes is to hear them LOUD and to a full dancefloor!!

After all, that's how the music was designed to be heard.

You'll also then be able to judge what he likes/dislikes and build the tape around that.

You could do it as a "Dummys guide to Northern soul" type thing and perhaps give some examples as to how the scene has developed over the past 5 decades.

I think the best thing is tunes with the WOW factor that you think will be precived to some one whos not into northern so forget oldies crossover modern newies ect, ect just give em summin to go yeah this is f***in ace, try to see past your own personal taste too if you see what i mean, give em summin to get their teeth into of course you would have to include summin like mello souls for a start

Putting a CD together is always quite difficult, if the guy decides he wants to try it in the flesh as it were, he's probably going to want to hear some of the tracks you've recorded for him. As advised in other posts, maybe better to take him to a dance friendly venue, (probably oldies based) and get him to nudge you when he likes something. Failing that make sure you include 'walk in my shoes' in the CD Emotion packed, lyrically superb, the right tempo, great intro, all topped with that magical voice..........it'd work for me

Do you mean ATYPICAL........most of the records listed above I would say are the usual suspects. I got into NS following on from my love of the Motown sound so it maybe a good idea to introduce him to some 60s TM first.
