This Grammy-award winning film traces Sam Cooke's personal and professional life - from his birth in the Mississippi delta and his gospel singing roots in the early 1950s, through his R 'n' B and pop music career, taking in his contributions to the civil rights struggle underscored by his last hit, A Change Is Gonna Come, to his untimely death in 1964. Written by respected music critic Peter Guralnick, featuring rare performance clips and TV archive material, and contributions from Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Lou Rawls, this programme chronicles Cooke's struggle to make it in the world of popular mainstream music, culminating in his triumphant engagement at New York's Copacabana in the summer of 1964.
