Dear All,

Any pointers or comments would be greatly appreciated.

My car is from 1982 and so is my car audio ie pioneer tape deck ("with" auto reverse!!😏) My question is in 2 parts and i will keep it concise (ish).

1. Does anybody sell cassette tapes anymore? ie I'm talking really about the ubiquitous rare northern modern soul compilations which were around, a guy in Camden market had millions of the things for a fiver each but i am going back 25 years or so, is this something that nowadays you just simply can't buy because there is no market for it, or am i looking in the wrong places and tape selling and swapping still exist?

2. I know a friend of mine had Sam Dees "The show must go on" and Luther "this close to you" both on cassette and I am certain from memory they were legit releases but can't find any evidence of their existence anywhere. I remember cassette tapes being around all over the place, but where have they gone? did people chuck them, tape over them, were they destroyed? or simply did a huge amount of great soul albums throughout the 70s 80s only get a vinyl release?

As requested, any help with this would be appreciated as I'm getting a little bored of Olivia Newton Johns Greatest hits and Boogie Tunes Volume 1 both on a loop. Before you ask no i am NOT prepared to dump my pioneer cassette "with" auto reverse😏

Big Thankyou

As my job took me to live in various places in Africa, Asia, Australia and beyond, I transferred much of my record collection onto TDK tapes, which weighed considerably less than vinyl, so less expens

Hi Dax , clearing out another draw of bits and bobs and have found 4 no C90s , no use to me haven't got a tape player , and don't want another.

Tape 1 , Radio 1 interview featuring Annie Nightingale, Dave Envison & the Legend Edwin Starr from 1983 .

Tape 2, Jimmy James & the Vagabonds live at " Pussycats " in Wakefield quite good actually .

Tape 3, Recorded live at the Wigan Casino , can't guarantee sound quality

Tape 4 , A Nigel Parker compilation from Brighouse 1993 , includes some great tunes .

Yours if you want them mate

Fascinating thread. I thought I'd have a delve for anything about soul on cassettes, and of course it's here in Soul Source.

The reason I was having a look around was that I've been reading a book called 'High Bias - the Distorted History of the Cassette Tape' by Marc Masters. Despite there being no references to soul music nor to the tape-swapping scene within soul that was a big thing for many of us, it's a great book.

One particular aspect of it is how so many individuals and bands just used basic cassette tape equipment to record their own music, and instead of even trying to get it then issued on vinyl or in later years CD, would simply copy the tapes and give away or sell direct to anyone they could. It made me wonder how many aspiring soul acts took the same route, and whether people have been digging for obscure home made cassettes with some stunning soulful tracks that only ever existed on that cassette? Potentially this could be cassettes from the early days of the equipment being available in the late 60s onwards, though of course as the ability to record to CD and digital media emerged many would have switched to those media.
