Soulagogo
Are carvers bootlegs ? I can see the merits in getting a copy of a unissued sound. I see regularly carvers of rare sounds for sale on Facebook by a well known DJ at £25. I assume no royalties have been paid . What’s your thoughts ? Soul Salad
I'm no expert LOL but my understanding: Bootleg = Normally done in quantity to make a quick buck and normally there to deceive the record buyer. Royalties not paid. Carver = very little quantity, sometimes one or two done for family/friends, usually a white label and often single sided, don't think royalties need to be paid? Don't think a carver is illegal as generally for private use (family and friends), whereas a boot is illegal. Link to comment Social source share

Hence "Are carvers bootlegs?" was to me a question - I will be extra careful, but only trying to help 1 Link to comment Social source share
Thinksmart
If they are sold they are indisputedly illegal and to me the DJ should be called out. It is totally unacceptable and they know what they are doing. Edited December 9, 2023 by Thinksmart 1 Link to comment Social source share
Pigeon Thing
there def illegal if sold, the main diff between a carver (or lathe cut records) and a traditional boot (also illegal ) is that its not pressed vinyl so initial outlay / production costs can be kept to a min, as theres no min run, you could get 1 ... and a pretty quick turnaround... selling them though, seems to be the basic model for the music industry, lets rip off the musicians...(the latest version of this is Spotify)... Lathe cut or carvers are really useful if your making music though, there are loads of great smaller scale lathe cut labels out there (albeit not soul) who are making fantastic hand made records...( hello Andy Votel..) Carvers, bootlegs to play in the comfort of your own , still bootlegs , may as well play them on any format cd etc, as most of the expensive ones have been released at some time and hopefully royalties paid ,,, Link to comment Social source share
Solution Julianb Posted December 10, 2023 Solution Share Posted December 10, 2023 I used to do emidiscs to order back in the early 70s. Bought my machine from Jeff King of Soul Sounds infamacy. The buyers were fully aware of what they were buying. Sold the machine a few years later to Paul Rowan who is still around . Happy days 1 Link to comment Social source share
