Another great night at North Newington Social Club , we had about 90 Soul folk in , which is pretty good ,considering the about of other Soul functions available on this busy bank holiday weekend .Sometimes the slightest change of decorating can transform the room , tonight we decided to change all the light bulbs to blue one's, which gave the room a more intimate feel . We have been experimenting with the lighting for some time now , usually it's either too dark or too light , now it's as near to perfect as possible !! Many thanks to all the people who travelled to our event, as well as the loyal locals , we met 4 lovely Soul fans from Essex , who slept over in their camper vans and made a weekend of it - thanks for making the effort , and really pleased you all enjoyed it .Also thanks to Pascall from Birmingham , Ian from Evesham , Finny and Ken from Northampton , plus their partners , and not forgetting Tommo from Norfolk ,always good to see you all.We rotate the DJ spots each event , so all of us get a fair chance of playing the later " floor filling " spots , and being more creative during the early " graveyard " set , which gives us a chance to programme some lesser known sides , without pressure to fill the floor .

Tom kicked the night off in fine style , playing some new" house "styled dancers , plus some superb " crossover / 70's " items , and several underplayed Northern sides from his awesome collection .Next up was Steve , who loves traditional Northern Soul , his set included Al Greene " Don't leave me " , Gene Chandler " I can take care of myself " , Billy Butler " The Right Track " , Theresa Lindsey's underplayed Detroit outing " Gotta find a way " , and Tyrone Davis's forgotten UK Stateside waxing , " Bet You Win " .Northern Soul veteran Dave Bailey was the next Soul spinner , his current floor fillers included the ever popular Harry Deal " I still love you " , The Invitations " Watch out little girl " [ which went down a storm ] , the beautiful RCA side by Barbara Cooper " What's one more tear " , Tutti Hill's A- Rock side " He's a lover " and the so soulful Willie Hightower " Because I love you " .By now it was 10pm , and time for Charlie Mac' to grace the decks , always playing interesting sets , from his ever growing collection .Tonight he played sides like : The 4 Larks " Another Chance " , Ivy Jo " I can feel the pain " , Bettye Lavette's newie " Right out of time " , Kenny Hamber's " Anything you want " and Sandy Wynn's evergreen " Touch of Venus " . 11pm came round really quickly , so it was time for myself [ Eddie ] to select some floor fillers , keep it interesting , but try to resist the temptation to play too many semi - knowns !! Amonst the 25 odd records spun were : TJ Williams " Baby I need you " , Archie Bell " A thousand wonders " ,Len Jewell's Fontana stormer " Bettin' on love " , Honey & The Bees " Dynamite Exploded " [ which went down well suprisingly ] , Martha Star's ever brilliant " No part time love for me " and finishing off with some 70's and 80's , including Bobby Thurston's Epic outing " Very last drop " and Randy Brown's " beered up monster " I'm always in the mood " which everyone sung along to.The big screen showed " Standing in the shadows of Motown " and loads of obscure footage from the 60's , plus the ever popular Wigan Casino dance scenes from ' 77 .

Thanks to everyone for making the effort , roll on July for our next event .
