July 24, 200816 yr Shiptown is the original release & I too have been told the mix was better, Joe Webster the lead singer who I met last year didnt know if the mixws were different tho'..............anyone ?????. Russ I've also been told the versions were different (not just the mixes?) but I only have the scepter release so I can't compare. Joe Webster was also in the wild ones on spqr and the soul duo on shiptown.
July 24, 200816 yr Joe Webster was also in the wild ones on spqr Wow! Didn't know that. I like their "I've Been Crying".
July 24, 200816 yr the shiptown release is a more raw production and i have to say i like it the intro is far less grating than the sceptre version....it starts off with the vocals sort of blending into the music but the vocals seem to get stronger as it plays through its also a tad slower than the sceptre ....altogether a luvverly choon....you should pick up a sceptre copy fairly easily the shiptown ones being a little more ellusive.... cookie
July 24, 200816 yr Wow! Didn't know that. I like their "I've Been Crying". ==== GREAT RECORD - IM SURE ONE OF MR LEVINE DISCOVERIES IN THE 70S ....
July 24, 200816 yr I've also been told the versions were different (not just the mixes?) but I only have the scepter release so I can't compare. Joe Webster was also in the wild ones on spqr and the soul duo on shiptown. Yep, in the Soul Duo with Ida Sands & many of the Shiptown releases also featured the Showmen on backing. The Norfolk area of Virginia was prolific with Shiptown, How Big, which were Noah Biggs labels & Frank Guidas group of labels, as well as others, always thought there is a good CD comp there some where. Lenis Guess was obviously also asscotiated with FG labels & others, including his own. Out of interest Ida Sands - Rescue Me on Shiptown is a far better version than the Chief version, which was redone in NYC, apparently they couldnt afford the train fare for Ida & the Idettes, so used the studio backing singers, again the Shiptown release is a rawer affair, far harder than the Chief release, its popularity suffers as most have only heard this version. I played the Shiptown release at the 100 Club earlier this year & its gained a few more fans hopefully. Russ Edited July 24, 200816 yr by Russ Vickers
