Well, there was a point in the early 70's when Selectadisc was a must-visit location for Northern Soul devotees but sadly no more........

https://www.musicweek.com/story.asp?storycode=1037050

I guess that leaves just Rob Smith flying the flag in Nottingham?

Ian D

Guess it does Ian.If anyone deserves to be last man standing its Rob.

Maybe if Selectadisc had Rob's organisational skills.................................. biggrin.gif

Yes I would bet there would be very few that hadn't had a record via Selectadisc back in the day.

In those days you had to travel to 'buy yer soul' as there weren't many outlets about.

spent 100s of Happy hours in the various Selta-discs in the 70s and 80s

got loads of records from there over the years

Not be through the doors for a while -since the Goths took over i think

still a very sad day

Rob

Agree with you there Roberto ; parted with a bob or two in there in the 70s and 80s ......

The only true " independant " must now be Rob " aunty wainwright " Smith's emporioum .

I think the disorganised chaos and tilting piles of records are part of the appeal aren't they? A genius stroke in target marketing IMO laugh.gif

Sadly I was in notts yesterday and Robs shop never seems to be open

And the selsectadisc staff also said he never opens on thursdays ...so I dont think you can rely on Rob to keep the vinyl flag flying in notts

I was in the selectadisc shop and they never mentioned they were closing down ...the shop was full of young student types buying vinyl

What a shame

I met owner Brian Selby on Mansfield market in 1969. Following a rummage through..I asked if he had Everday People-Sly and the Family Stone, to which he replied... 'try my new shop at Arkwright St, Nottm, it opens in a few weeks'

I then met John Brattan his partner, Derek Allen, Billy Swain, Alan Day, Dave Knight and Rob Smith.

Good times..

Remember my first trip over to Selecta. Walked in, stood there lookin' a complet twot thinking where's the soul records. Guy takes one look at me stood there in me skinners. Doesn't say word just points to the stairs.

Yeah, regular weekly trip back in the day.

Steve Gutteridge was there when it got raided and they ushered him and his mate out the back into a shed. So while the place was being raided Gutty and mate were trying to hide by burying themselves amongst a load of Soul Fox Orchestras :shades:

Seems a stupid question to ask given the thread . . . . . . . . Is it closing? Ran by today (admittedly with blinkers on) looked ok. Just been on website, update dated today - no mention. Half the shop (lower bit) and premises further down Market St (was second hand selectadisc) closed down a while ago.

Never be amazed to see Rob's shop not open at certain times - he's using a sun dial not a clock - love the man.

Oh bloody hell :shades: . Sure they know best regarding business but we keep hearing about a resurgence in vinyl, amongst younger consumers too. Would think it ideally placed with its position and history to capitalise on this.

Starting to feel very old, I can remember when all this was fields and Forest were a team to be feared.

Big shame.

An institution amongst UK indie stores.

Spent many happy times chatting, drinking tea and selling-in the monthly new releases to Baz and Jim (amongst others), when I was a record label rep...many moons ago!

:D

I think the only possible future for independant record stores in the UK is within vinyl...of the second hand variety. Yes, we all buy via the internet, but a small independant second-hand vinyl/collector's store with a low rent still stands a chance? The internet can't beat face-to-face buying/trading, surely?

A very sad day, like many others Arkwright st was where I bought my first import (Creative Source "Who is he?" - still got the very copy!) but it has loked on its uppers for some while now. I did buy the complete Ty Karim there about a month ago though, so clearly they still know thier stuff - you won't find it in HMV I betcha!

While on the subject of ex employees, Trevor East who appreared on Tiswas on a regular basis worked at Arkwright st, he went on to be head of sports or something for Central TV.

As for Robs, after he appeared on BBC east Mdlands website he did get a vist from H & S - didn't do much good though!

Sad times,

RB

Baz and Jim, unlike some of the staff, are decent blokes. But the place has been a model of how not to run a record shop for many years:

Rude, arrogant, hostile service (I'm sure Furgus wouldn't object to me pointing the finger at him for embodying these qualities), resented by literally hundreds of alienated music fans in Notts. The staff have a shocking rep for this. Its actually quite entertaining if you give them as good as you get, which most people don't... The attitude might have something to do with their meagre wages!

An inability to get you a record that you want to give them the money for, rather than ordering next day delivery off the net, even when you a) give them all the details and cool.gif know full well that several distributors are carrying it.

Crap second hand section (at least in my day, I wasn't around when Notts was in its prime as "bootleg capital of the world"). Could have been their best asset if they'd known what to do with it.

Often a lack of sufficent knowledge and/or experience in those charged with stocking the specialist sections (ordering crap irrelevant stuff off lists and missing out on the essentials)

...I could go on. They had every chance to keep the place going, but they totally wasted the opportunity to take their long history and iconic status into the digital era, by spending thousands and thousands of pounds on a completely shit website really late in the day - leaving them trailing a world behind smarter rivals like Piccadilly in Manchester.

The place has done me well over the years (especially when Delroy's collection came through in the late 90s  ), I've been out on the beers with various staff members many times (including several of their xmas do's etc), and I'll be sad to see it go. Plus I strongly feel that the internet can never replace proper shops for being "community centre" type places that are vital for kids to get involved with music and the music scenes' characters. But it's no surprise, and they only have themselves to blame.
