  1. Had the below passed on via our contact us feature from Ben and Christian... We've recently released a podcast about the Northern Soul scene in the present day. We went to Night Owl in Stockport to speak to some of the people fully immersed in the scene and came out with some great interviews highlighting the raw passion of the community that still stands strong today, and we're really exited to share it with you! Floor Shakers To Cry For - A Northern Soul Story Northern Safari Podcast OCT 20 Northern soul has always thrived on the rare, the obscure and the undiscovered. We visited Stockport’s guild hall to hear from those who have dedicated their lives to the movement which emerged in dancehalls of northern England back in the 60s. We explore the history of iconic 70s and 80s venues such as Manchester’s Twisted Wheel and Wigan Casino where the original all-nighter was born. direct link to podcast https://open.spotify.com/episode/5IKmekuZf8kwAmTg577Lc0

  6. A recent press release pass on regarding Rita Graham Loveforce International Records Signs Internationally Renowned Soul-Jazz Singer Rita Graham Loveforce International Records has signed Internationally renowned Soul-Jazz singer and former Raelette, Rita Graham to an exclusive worldwide multi-song deal. Santa Clarita, CA, October 21, 2019 --(PR.com)-- Loveforce International Records has signed Soul-Jazz singer Rita Graham to an exclusive multi-song deal. The deal is global and will include several single releases of original songs Ms. Graham co-wrote and sang. It will also include co-publishing on the original songs through Loveforce International Music and a fan book which will be handled by Loveforce International Publishing Company. Rita Graham has a storied career. She was one of multiple Grammy award winning NAACP, Kennedy Center award winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Ray Charles Raelettes. In fact, she was the only female that Ray Charles personally produced an album on and released on his own record label. A song she recorded in 1966 has been on the Northern Soul Charts in the UK for 5 decades. She has performed with Ray Charles, Oscar Peterson, The Harry James and Duke Ellington Orchestras. She has performed in festivals, night clubs, casinos and concert venues all across the globe. After a stint as a Ray Charles Raelette, Charles produced an LP on her and released it on his own Tangerine label. She is the only female singer Ray Charles ever personally produced and released a LP on his own label. The LP was called Rita Graham Vibrations. It created a sensation when it was first released. Ms. Graham recorded several singles with TV Composer, Mike Post (Rockford Files, Law and Order, Hill Street Blues, etc). She was featured vocalist with The Harry James Orchestra for 3 years, and with Mercer Ellington and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Tour ‘82. She was a featured artist with Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, and comedian Redd Foxx, among others. She has performed in festivals, night clubs, casinos and concert venues in Las Vegas, Canada, the UK, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Manila, Bangkok, and Russia. The Tiaras were studio singers whom Rita never met. A track from the Vibrations album, "My Cup Runneth Over With Love" is also a Northern Soul Hit. From 1999-2009, Ms. Graham was known as "The First Lady Of Sambuca Jazz Café," Atlanta’s premiere Showroom, where the CD "Rita Graham Live at Sambuca Atlanta" was recorded. She performed in concert recently with Blues Legend Sammy Blue. “It will be an asset to our company to have an artist the caliber of Ms. Graham on our roster,” said Loveforce International President, Mark Thomas. Rita Graham is a also Board member of Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. and she teaches voice at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. A suspense/murder mystery novel she penned, entitled "Karma Rising" has been optioned to be made into a feature film.

  8. the last day or so to express your view if not done already! ------------------------------------------------------------------- always on the lookout for future poll suggestions some criteria - one version must be fairly well known, need to limit it to just 2 or 3 versions, looking for battles that be both interesting and enjoyable any ideas ? if have any, then get them to me via pm (not on this topic please ) to me via @Mike
  9. don't get the bobby g reference to me like many others he was just a mainstream pop singer having a go at a certain style that was popular at the time for whatever reasons. What was it with him, just the 2 or 3 tracks with a certain beat/style, 100s without? say not really a qualification that earns anyone the right to be tagged a 'soul' artist, be it blue eyed or what ever quite a few 'blue eyed' had and got and delivered the 'soul' but I'd say not him... imo

  13. The quick moving Soul Source spotlight falls on 4 recent soul music releases from Kent Records. Quite a handful, the release words and sounds follow below... Peggy Gaines - When The Boy That You Love / Everybody Knows - CITY 062 Nashville singer Peggy Gaines had two singles on Ted Jarrett’s Ref-O-Ree label but the best track, the Bob Holmes-written and produced ‘When The Boy That You Love (Is Loving You)’, was only discovered in the mid-90s. Released on CD and a limited 100 Club Anniversary single, it became a guaranteed dancefloor filler and is still in demand, fetching over £100 for that first pressing. The plaintive ballad ‘Everybody Knows’ is making its vinyl debut and will appeal to both Southern and Deep Soul aficionados. Little Johnny Hamilton - Apartment #9 / Crying Like A Baby - DEEP SOUL 12 Little Johnnie Hamilton was a 60s Los Angeles soul singer whose records are all hard to find, despite their quality. The searing deep soul slowie ‘Apartment #9’ is a million miles from the funk of ‘The Git Down’, recorded at the same session and issued on the Watts Way label in 1967 as a two-part single. Hamilton wails away his pain on a sparse number abetted by some righteous girl backing singers. ‘Cry Like A Baby’, a release on the one-off Soul Shack label, is a more mainstream offering of much charm, complete with strings. Phillip Mitchell / Ray Godfrey - I'll See You In Hell First / Ain't Givin' Up - CITY 61 Phillip Mitchell only cut one single for Spring’s Event subsidiary in 1975 – despite the beautiful ballad ‘There’s Another In My Life’ being an R&B hit, he did not have a follow-up. However, there were three songs recorded at the Brad Shapiro-led Muscle Shoals session, and ‘I’ll See You In Hell First’ was the superb mid-tempo track that lay dormant until compiled on an Ace CD in 1990. It features Mitchell singing at his best on an inspired, self-penned song and is long-overdue a vinyl pressing as originally hoped for. Ray Godfrey had four 45s for the label, but like Mitchell he was best known as a songwriter, for Millie Jackson, Joe Simon and Act I in particular. He wrote under his real name of Raeford Gerald. He produced this song on both Joe Simon and Millie Jackson; his own reading has now been found on the multi-track tapes for the song’s recording session. It is a worthy addition to the Godfrey/Gerald catalogue. The Pretenders - Just Be Yourself / It's Everything About You That I Love - TOWN 172 The Pretenders were the Carnival label’s main act throughout the 70s and up to 1980. By 1977 producer Joe Evans was embracing the disco era and recorded them on the excellent Kenneth Ruffin song, ‘Just Be Yourself’. Its furious yet solid rhythm and catchy title-line has captivated soul dancers for many years, making the originals expensive and very hard to find now. The flip was their final release, an updated and disco-slanted version of Lee Williams & the Cymbals’ ballad. All above 45s available now via Ace Records website and all the usual soul suspects
