  1. Whatever it is, Levine either played it or made it. Or it was Russ's uncle.
  2. Because I don't get around anymore, I don't know if various sounds have been resurected at some stage. Anyway one track I have always loved and didn't get the recognition it deserved(IMHO), probably because it isn't rare enough, is; "Be's That Way Sometime" Scientists Of Soul on Kashe. Just a good catchy song. Paul
  3. Saw them live along with Mac & Katie Kissoon at Edge Hill Colledge in Ormskirk. in about 75 ish. I must have been short of something to do that night. Paul
  4. Also There was the Feathers Version Of "Lost Summer Love" voc & inst on Bell. Turned it into some out & out pop record Paul
  5. Bity Mcleans Version of "It Keeps Raining" was pretty good(mmmm Bitty Bitty) Paul
  6. What worries me is when playing any of these out, which would be regarded as the original to allow only the real deal to be played. I for one would not like to pay to attend any soul do and find the DJ playing the non first pressing plant copy. Paul
  7. I agree Ady. But what I was trying to say was that it was that the small amount of pop stuff was accepted. It was just that mid term at Wigan they took the p*ss a lot. I think many people around the scene from its start to the present day are a bit selective about what is pop crap and what is acceptable. Personally(no pun), I loved Paul Anka "Can't Help Loving You" but hated Johnny Vanelli. And to this day there are loads of "white" records being accepted on the scene. The same can be said about '70s sounds also. Paul
  8. There is always a lot of conflict about what should or shouldn't be played on the scene particularly when it comes to "pop" stompers etc. In the early days of the Wheel etc there was allsorts played i.e Round Robin "Kick That Little Foot Sally Anne" . Generally the scene revolved around predominently "black" records of a soul or R&B style coupled with "white" sounds withe the appropriate beat or sound and all the punters was happy(I think). Then Dave Godin (RIP) with all the good intentions went to have a look at "The Northern Soul Scene". From this day on the it was labelled a Soul scene and the arguments started. Please discuss Paul PS I am predominantly a soul fan, but also there are many white pop tracks that have been played that I personally love. And others I hate!
  9. On the original thread of what should never have been played, anyone remember "Toody" by Angels one Five Paul
  10. I think the idea was to unite the UK soul scene, both Northern and "southern". I don't think we ever go to the stage of Russ Winstanley sharing a stage with Chris Hill. Weren't the first Yate nights under the Banner of the Intercity Soul Club? I remember them putting on an allnighter in Plymouth while I was under basic Naval Training, and I think I stayed awake allnight in sympathy.!! Paul
  11. Remember "Manys The Slip" from the Mecca/Burnley Alldayers when Levine came back from the states with it claiming it was the vocal to Bok To Bach! Paul
  12. Adding to the original thread though. How about Wombat "I'm Gettin' On Life" I remember Chris Bloor from St Helens apparently having one of the only copies at the time. Wouldn't play that again!
  13. At the weekend I bought a cut price CD that had a couple of tracks that I didn't have(on CD). The main reason for buying it was, yes, you got it The Cherry People . and the CD was only £2.99. Also another version of the Sapphires Slow Fizz with alternative lyrics, what's the story? I hadn't heard it before. Paul
  14. Is that the original, if so surely it can be played out DON'T LOOK ETHEL!
  15. Apparently accapella cover versions by immediate relatives are allowed as long as it is a cover version of the original!
  16. Back in the early 70s I had the Gene Chandler There Was A Time album, and as you do looked through the other tracks for "Northern" type sounds. I loved "Bet You Never Thought", but thought it was a bit swingining Sinatra ish until I heard it out and it certainly does work. What other sounds would fit into the mould(apart from obvious supper club type things like Gene McDaniels Point Of No Return) I'll start off with the above and add The Scientists of Soul-Be's That a Way Sometime. Any others? Paul

When the album was released, it was quite in demand for the track "Where Is The Love" which was picked up by Levine at the Mecca. I think that "Where is The Love" was released as The folow up to "Shoorah, ShooraH". Ah, the days when you could hear some of the same tracks in the Highland room that they played downstairs in the divs room. What a difference 30 years makes! Paul

    "Too Late" Williams & Watson
  20. The other side, "Magic Melody" is also pretty good in a sweet soul sorta way. Reminds me a bit of the Mylestones "Sexy Lady" Paul

Last night on "The City Gardner" they played Billy Stewart "Secret Love". They usually have a reasonable soundtrack to it. Oh and War "Lowrider". I keep meaning to get a copy of Billy Stewart "Teaches Old Standards New Tricks" It must be an essential album. Paul

Also a good version of "Am I The Same Girl" and I also love her version of "Every Day I Have To Cry". Paul

Sorry, but at Clarence St Tech there were a fair share of knuckledraggers and for a Southport Woollyback it could get a bit dangerous at times. Sorry for any offence to well adjusted individuals from the pool. Anyway, "Footsee Yeh, de de de de" etc
  24. Well, one is lower than the other

At the time it aired, I was an apprentice at Southport, but had to go to Liverpool once a week for day release. There were some scouse lunatics around at Tech and when the lads on my course told one of the maniacs that I could do the Footsee, he insisted that I did it. I didn't loose my bottle though, I was not going to degrade myself without the aid of pharmaceuticals for any scouse inbred! and I didn't get a pasting . The fact that it was also a Monday, so I was probably on a major downer didn't help though. Paul
