Sugar Pie DeSanto - Documentary kickstarter
Whilst browsing the web, I came across this interesting kickstarter on Indiegogo for a documentary about an explosive talent that is fortunately very much still with us... https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/indiegogo-go-go-power-for-sugar-pie-desanto Clip from site: The Perks: Get To Know The Sugar We want you to get to know the real Sugar Pie DeSanto through this documentary film, even before its release. The perks for supporting the film are all about that. Receive personal shout-outs from the creative team, posters, and postcards, Sugar Pie's' music, exclusive access to film and music releases, a film wrap-up "basement" party, master classes with Auraeus and Sugar Pie (learn about filmmaking and music performing, respectively), a music recording session, private film screenings and receptions, and the film's premieres. By supporting this film and taking advantage of the perks, you will get to know her more intimately and understand what makes her a first-rate musician, admired by many including other legends of popular music. We will use the Indiegogo funds to produce the first third of Bittersweet. We will create a teaser for our supporters to view in advance. This is our "Thank you!" to you for believing in us and showing Sugar Pie your love! The preliminary work we produce using the Indiegogo funds will help us raise the rest to complete the film. We will try to get a deal on the film's distribution. Of course if that doesn't happen, we will do the distribution ourselves...we're not distributors but we know enough to get the completed film directly to you. Promise! Marva Whitney - Funk Soul Sister - R.I.P
Sad to say another great has passed away. R.I.P. Added by site: source: http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/news/international/34507/RIP-Marva-Whitney-Soul-Sister-1 Whitney was a featured vocalist with the James Brown Revue in the late ‘60s, performing with Brown on tour in America, Europe, North Africa and in Vietnam during the war. She recorded several songs for Brown’s King Records including her biggest hit, a rewrite of the Isley Brothers track ‘It’s My Thing (You Can’t Tell Me Who to Sock It To)’. She’s also known for her song ‘Unwind Yourself’, which has been sampled numerous times, most notably by DJ Mark the 45 King on his 1987 track ‘The 900 Number’ and on DJ Kool’s 1996 hit ‘Let Me Clear My Throat’. In 2006, Whitney collaborated with DJ Pari and the James Brown inspired Japanese funk orchestra Osaka Monaurail to produce a new album, I Am What I Am. The success of this revival saw Whitney return to the touring circuit to play shows in Japan, Europe and Australia. Whitney visited Australia in 2009 appearing at the Falls festival and performing as part of the festival’s opening day Soul and Funk Revue. FL’s review of the show reported that with Adelaide’s Transatlantics acting as her backing band, Whitney took little time to prove why, in her heyday, she gained the title “Marvellous Marva” but a few songs into her set the then 65-year-old singer collapsed with many in the crowd believing that she had “pulled a James Brown.” However it soon became clear that she had suffered a stroke when she was carried from the stage leaving Transatlantics vocalist Tara Lynch to complete the set. Whitney was taken to Geelong Hospital and cancelled the remaining dates on her tour, however she did recover enough to perform several shows the following year.

Jimmy Castor RIP
Unconfirmed at the minute, but I've read online that Jimmy has passed away. Sad news. added by site news clip and link Funk great Jimmy Castor, the man who made the Troglodyte and Bertha Butt famous, passed away on Monday at the age of 64. At this time, there is no cause of death. According to VVN Music affiliate Noise11, "Castor's grandson P.J. Romain said on Twitter that his "grandfather is unresponsive at the hospital," before breaking the news eight hours later in a tweet that said: "My grandfather Jimmy Castor died today at 2:30 on MLK day." ""Disco musician Nile Rodgers also tweeted his grief, saying: "I can't stop crying. How do I explain how much his brilliant upbeat music touched my soul? Jimmy Castor RIP."" Read more: http://www.vintagevi...l#ixzz1jhAvFTWh bio feature clip and link Castor recorded a few singles for the My Brothers label with the Clintonian Cubs in the early 1 960s before his first solo sides for Jet Set ('65), Decca ('66), and then Smash, a subsidiary of Mercury, the label he had started out on, By 1966 there was a new sound in Harlem; doo-wop was out (although it would never die, experiencing regular revivals into the 1 990s). The new sound, inspired by the large and growing Puerto Rican population of Harlem, was dubbed Latin soul, and locals like Ray Barrette (11 Watusi") and Joe Cuba ("'Bang' 'Bang'") were the new stars uptown, By now Castor had added cimbales and vibes to his arsenal of talents and with his longtime writing and producing partner John Pruitt came up with one of the all-time great New York Latin soul discs-"Hey, Leroy, Your Mama's Callin' You." "Hey, Leroy" was and is irresistible, with its fat melodic bass line, descending piano triplets, timbales, and conga grooves, wailing sax, and call-and-response refrain"go to yo' mama, go to yo' mama." By Christmas week of '66 it had risen to #16 on Billboards national R&B charts (#31 pop), but in Harlem it was as good as #1 and would be sung by kids on the baseball fields and playgrounds of New York for a decade. read more http://www.70disco.com/jimmycas.htm

Wilton Nov 11 2011 - A word from the team
You lost loads of your old regulars when Dave Box announced that there was going to be much less R&B played... I can't see how more Crossover will appeal to that crowd.

I was hoping to make it a heart-felt story of coming of middle age - not a documentary

Northern Soul - The Film - News, mainstream and more
I'm putting forward a script for a film about the current scene - none of this 'heyday' nostalgia for me... I see it as a cross between Tod Browning's Freaks and Cocoon The Return with a thumping 'Funky' Northern Soundtrack

News: Marvin Gaye - ( Artist Of The Week)
I think the lyrics are bit trite (sounds like he had one hand on his rhyming dictionary at the end of every line) and the musical backing is generally lacking in oomph. His vocal can't really be faulted, I just find it's a bit wishy washy at best. It's a 'go to' album for compilers of 'greatest album' lists, who are either very lazy or clueless (so they reel out the same cliched top ten). Commercial or not holds no sway in my argument - one of my top ten 45s of all time was a massives 70s Philly hit.
