  1. It was a brilliant live scene as a teenager you'd see all these really great groups for a few bob. And Howlin' Wolf and others touring. I don't get T Bone Walker.
  2. With top 100 Club boozer Mick Avery on drums.
  3. Just caught the white Brit stuff but gotta admit I was a huge fan of that as well as the black US originals. I saw Cream in 1966 at Manchester Uni for 6 bob with a totally unknown Jethro Tull supporting on a small stage. I was actually more impressed by JT though they were both great. They didn't mention the best lot The Family from Leicester.
  4. Not mixing it up with the Decca 45 that was poorly recorded are you Chalky, she'd be unlucky to have two stinkers out with her name on it!
  5. For my J&S projects. Ta Ady

The cheapest is the flip of one of their biggest hits Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time called Down Is Up, Up Is Down or summat.
  7. Not on any listings i've seen, perhaps it has a different title. Not necessarily Northern.
  8. He'd still got it at Cleethorpes a couple of years ago. For a bloke who supposedly (his claim) can't sing, he puts on a hell of a show.
  9. Moustachio Mick to the rescue: panic over. Ta Ady
  10. Any number/letter combo on that label that ain't HLU 10024. Ta Ady
  11. A lot of his 60s film songs were written by Giant, Baum & Kaye of Lou Johnson Big Top soul fame.
  12. Has anyone ever heard of a song with this title or these lyrics from HB? Ta Ady
  13. My UK demo gets the odd spin when the situation is right. I think Kenny only played it at Xfire he was a thoughtful DJ and worked out that the 100 Club mob may have had enough of it!
  14. In some cases it's not even down to personal taste. This is a very good record and surely nobody on here would argue objectively that it wasn't?

That's a good point about Rick Hall, five to ten years ago it all seemed like an impossibility (as did Big Top) but time changes things, as the Metros told us, and here we are with 'em both out. Never say never and stay in it for the long haul and you'll hopefully get there eventually (how many cliches?). It helped having Tony and Alec talking country to him, a language he understands.

Nice thought Chalky but without the CDs they describe it would be a bit frustrating. It could make a good 200 CD box set though!
  17. I thought it was Rimini or was I asleep there too?

And in the booklet in colour Tim. We had an Email of congratulations on the excellence of the CD from none other than Andrew Loog Oldham too!
  19. It was listed as a Chess release with number but I've never heard of one being seen.
  20. They all are, I blame the promoter!
  21. It was underground in 69 up North when I got into it, same time as the Wheel, only a few mod/skin gangs seemed to know about it, thousands didn't. Not until Dave Godin described it did it get any kind of acknowledgement.
  22. Agree with the Supremes 'Itching' I used to play it a lot in the 80s, but how do you dance to 'Higher & Higher' without falling over?
  23. Sorry if this has been covered but I've been AWOL from SS seeing LCFC stick it up NFFC. 1) Nobody really derides DILY or the Isleys, it's just we've all heard them 1000 times so don't eagerly await the 1001 play. 2) Wigan gets stick because it's the lowest common denominator for so many casual observers who relate everything through it so if you didn't go or went and didn't think it the best nighter ever it's annoying. Dunno what DJs you're relating to but probably the fact that a few have played the same set for 30 years would irk a few of the scene regulars. 3) I can't think of any promoter who has promoted for all their life. I didn't start till I was 26 and others have dipped in and out; maybe you could give a for instance as with the club. 4) Again I don't think Berry gets much stick. He's probably like Alex Ferguson of Man Utd who rubs people up the wrong way and it gets carried over into the general picture of them. An opposite example could be Gladys Knight, hugely popular but universally loved, as far as I can see, by Northern Soul fans. Success isn't particularly frowned upon but as it's our passion we like to see that any aspect of it is gone about in the right way with the right attitude. So I don't really agree with your points squire! Cheers Ady

Hi Rob, The 78 0f The Panic Is On is just the same as the 45 version so it's a curio more than anything. RCA is hard going but we'll get there eventually just like we did with Lou. Thanks for the kind comments. Ady
  25. Well as bootleggers were more interested in profit than creating an artefact, I'm sure they didn't want to pay an extra hundred bucks for another colour. Cheers Ady
