Grapevine, Kent, Etc. Original Master Tapes Or Dubs Off Records ?
HI ALL PETE You are right, but unless it was recorded in the UK or made in JA for the UK when the master stamper was sent over, I have assumed that every thing on a UK LABEL from 1958 to 1974 is a DUB RECORDING from DISC 45, DAVE K

Buying '60S Lps - Stereo Or Mono?
HI ALL The best sound reproduction is of 4 track tape or multi track studio recordings, hours of fun if you are lucky to have the opportunity, vinyl reproduction standards were tech more advanced than the equipment used to play vinyl on, STEREO was always seen as a superior way to listen to recordings in the mid 6ts, as such it was very much in vogue, post Sgt Pepper, Pet Sounds, Axis bold as love, which gave birth to UK Progressive Blues, by 1969 most LPs were STERO with 2 or 3 tracks of special effex to turn you on when smoking dope, MONO was doomed? However not to for SOUND SYSTEM OPERATORS, DJ & PA COMPANYS. who indeprom each other, seemed to discover a new approach to sound in the following way:~- SPEAKERS In the late 50s in JAMAICA the home of the SOUND SYSTEM, They were trying to capture the best bass sound, to do this bigger is best, speaker cabinets when I first went to a ALL-NIGHT BLUES, HAD 28" RCA SPEAKERS & LINED INSIDE WITH CURTAINS, damping down, In 1968 a friend of mine, was working with ROGER CHAPMAN & FAMILY, a LEICTER BAND, Who were the 1st group in the world to use fold-back as a separate sound system PA, the band also introduced the BASS BIN, A BASS BIN was exactly what the SOUND MAN wanted, & very simple to make (speaker tech, has always been superior than amplification) the US comp JBL made the best speakers for BASS BINS, Instead of mounting the speaker facing out, they turned it around & made the sound funnel, this advancement was already known to prisoners around the world who had a transistor radio, by putting a empty tin can on the speaker, you have a bass bin (try it) AMPS PA, SOUND MEN & DJ use heavy duty CROWN AMP 500watt valves, for the solid sound and a mixer ROSE MORRIS was a pioneer of the sound desk which worked on equalising each input, he built a 12 channel desk which went very quickly to 32 then 64, this enabled the sound of a live band to place parts of the sound in any area of the room, (i can remember micing a drum kit with 8 mice's even the drummers fart could be miked up) Just a thought, in 1965 the loudest group in the world were the WHO, LIVE they were kicking out 200 watts! in 66 they bought half of the biggest sound system in the world it was 1k, and belonged to " FRANK SINATRA, HE DID IT HIS WAY" TURNTABLE. IN 1971 my turntables were GARRARD SP25MK2, GREAT DECKS, But as much as I have a great fondness for them, they were a poor relation to what we now consider to be the finest deck ever, apart from some modification, the TECHNICS 1210 is the #1 worldwide. This little write up i hope explains that sound mono through mixing can give you a better output than any stereo recording, professionals will always go for MONO  DAVE K

Joe Tex You Better Beleive It Baby
HI ALL JOE TEX did some excellent songs in the 6s/7s, however although 3 made it big on the NORTHERN SOUL SCENE! "SHOW ME" "YOU BETTER BELIEVE ME" & "UNDER YOUR POWER LOVE" also "CLOSE YOUR DOOOR" orig MOD/SOHO/ RICKY TIC PLAY,(I Don't think it got played much at the WHEEL) However SYSLJFM a perfect CLUB SOUL SOUND, ALL OVER, the Dial label & JOE TEX are plentiful, & for our Pittsburg brother "better believe it" was big at Wigan first then "show me" the 2 records seemed to go in and out of favour for 4 years "show me" was pressed for no apparent reason! apart from greed, and 95% of the KIDS did not bat an eyelid at the CASINO, Although I was always geared up! the group of promoters DJs took as many liberties with the Kid's, their is a real horrible side to the scene, that existed back then as they made a manufactured scene to print money, however we all moved on, until now, and now it's happening again all the f**kin bootlegs lining those who care little about you or me, all these bootlegs play on week or those who are on the scene cuz it's good, not real understanding or educated into the RARE SOUL SCENE,, KEEP THE VENUES FREE OF BOOTLEGS IN 2013, DAVE K

The Knights How Rare Is It
HI MARK, HI ALL In a perfect world, and how much we spend on records, they should all be mint I still get a chuckle from the notation of if you have money you can by mint records that are 40 tears old, If you wee looking to buy original Jamaican records in mint condition, you would not have a collection! just a pile of 45s, that are crap, As stated by myself before, collecting JA records without considering that it is a very poor 3rd world country, so poor that even cardboard LP SLEEVES are reused, sometimes even the rarest LP sleeves were turned inside out to have a basic screen print put on, most records had only 4% with proper labels, All though in the USA it was not so extreme, most records are DEMOS and very small amount of stock copies exist today, if a record gets damaged you pay what you want, you can have the stance of thinking they re worthless? but in truth it is better to have a rare record with a crack in it than not having it at all, My collection has about 20 cracked records, without the cracks they would be priced at about £15k as they have cracks well, lets say by buying them very cheap i have taken them off the market so you can pay top prices and i can play the record, and not worrying about my investment? The Players - Get Right
HI PATTO This great track that you speak about is like music to my ears, as it was the initial discovery of records like this in 67/68 that started the RARE SOUL SCENE & when the LONDON clubs went FUNKY late 69 the NORTH stayed with the popular sound of 66/7 for real soul power, it always amuses me, when people state that LONDON move with the times, as from 68 to 72, the reissue TAMLA MOTOWN that charted makes no sense of the dia mess the UK RECORD BUISNES was in (OK I will admit i did by quite a bit of pop especially the white blues groups) but for those who had records like "get right" the PLAYERS were a part of the Twisted Wheel In Crowd. or equivalent clubs, It is well known that I was into the new REGGAE scene, but like a few people in LONDON & THE HOME COUNTIES, WE STILL LISTENED TO SOUL, I used to try and buy the various artist LP's and your sound was on one of the best 33minutes of BLUES & SOUL MLS4002, 4001 WAS THE CLASSIC BIG ONE, I RECOMEND ALL THESE LP'S THAT WERE RELEASED IN 68/70 on EMI group of labels & president soul city and so on, as if you wonder what was the wheel really like well you record is a fine example. Duke Browner Boot At £110
HI ALL TOTALY AGREE, HOWEVER, It gets me how respected dealers go to events with boxes of this bootleg crap, and that is what is, nothing but worthless crap, that no matter how much we talk about it, lets face it, if dealers at venues are selling it in front of you unchallenged, any thing written is like pissing in the wind, and our dislike has the power of a toothless dog, me thinks! Jackie Trent You Baby
HI ALL...PETE I think that your EMI Disc example relates to where the actual recording was done, as I had a Pet Clark "downtown" (possibly the best UK recording there is of 6ts pop with soul?) also the disc itself with a PYE COSTOM LABEL is on a EMI PLATTER, A very rare record though in my opinion, more than the £50 you got, but that's the problem with acetates, there true value is never reached? I think Mick only got £100 for my Tymes "here she comes" & a bit more for Eve Sands "picture me gone" DAVE K

What's The Rarest Soul Record, On A Ja Label?
HI ALL Since I was 15 years old (67) I have collected JA records, initially it was ROCK STEADY and from 68 it was the REGGAE that we loved, back in those days, many records from JA were copies of US SOUL or UK POP, The main thing was the REGGAE, that backed these songs. In recent years (since the Internet) access to thousands of records on the TREASURE ISLE (JA) have come available, In with many hundreds of records, we have made discoveries of JA SOUL also some unusual pressings with US SOUL, Last weekend I was speaking to my mentor & sage, he boasted that he had the rarest SOUL Record to come from? and I can assure you all, he does have the rarest of them all. I will put into the RECORD CLUB PLAY OF THE DAY, HOWEVER what rare JA SOUL records have you got DAVE K

Grapevine Issues - Why So Attractive ?
HI ALL..As a collector of SOUL released in the UK, There are some basic rules to follow & to understand. 1) non of GRAPVINES 45s had been released in the UK this makes them 1st issues not reissues, 2) collecting UK 45s is an elitist hobby that has it0s roots in the MOD sub culture "watch the tonic?" to translate, tonic suits were made bespoke in SAVILE ROW, 2 TONE was of the peg BURTON, A CROMBIE COAT was made in ABERDEEN hence abercrombie, this blue coats made with plastic were made in sweat shops of BRICK LANE,3)GRAPEVINE LABEL has a quality pedigree attached to it, Scotchman John Anderson (soul bowl) Richard Sterling (Mr NICE FM) with RCA RECORDS, Do you get my gist, if not I will write more KTF DAVE K
