I've heard this shuffler bloke's a bit of an oil painting, unfortunately it's a De Kooning
  3. I've loved that Regina SHerard record for ages, beautiful eh? too dear at the mo for me though - boohoo
  4. AGREED. The diversity of people on the scene nowadays shows how many different ways people have got into it. I'm not going to judge anyone who got into it via TV, I don't know what "genuine" in this context means. I want as many to hear this music as is possible, it's the best music I have ever heard and has changed my life, if it does that to anyone else I'm glad. Sure the scene will change, but everything's got to evolve. We need to encourage young 'uns, you can count how many twenty-somethings there are going out on just two hands (probably). Also I don't think you need to be into retro, it stands up enough to be timeless

I can also vouch for Joe (Richard)'s credibility, though I wish he'd use the name I christened him with. I don't like favouritism but I do have a soft spot for Richard and forgive him all the pain of child-birth. He also plays a blinding set as anyone who saw him double deck with Matt Bolton at Cleethorpes this year will agree. Shame he didn't agree to wear the kitten vest and pink visor that me and his father bought for him though....
  10. maybe that could be a new thread Al, soul records you can do that dance they do in the psych room at Crossfire to....
  11. Anyone doing any xmas theme soul dos? A fave would be "Peace at Least" by the Rotary Connection. Any more festive faves anyone?
  12. I played the Joe Cato at the 100 club earlier this year. I do love it but it sounds a bit medieval, especially the intro, conjures up pictures of elves and goblins doing a jig
  13. I like your flyers Andrew, isn't it great not to have to pay rights to use the images? ha!
  14. The Scenesville flyers were done by Sweeney (a Soul Source member), they were beautiful, matched only by the George Jackson flyers (by Sweeney's brother), both of which became collectable. I've had friends in the States asking for pristine copies for framing. Sweeney has been asked to do the next Scenesville one for April, so let's keep the beer off it eh?
  15. I'm desperately sad about this. I would have more O levels if it wasn't for this man (that's my story). I went into school and asked my mates if revising counted if the radio was on at the same time, they said no, but I still had to have him on from 10 ti l12 every night whatever. I would also tape it and make compilations of bands like the Fall, Red Guitars and the Three Johns. When at college in Portsmouth he would tirelessly come down to DJ at the Friday disco, for pennies. Later, I got a job working for his brother Alan, who became a close friend and would talk about John often. It was through him I got to meet the great man at a party, he made me roar with his off the cuff wit. Then when I was in a band we sent Peely our singles and he played them on air, which was fantastic, so I sent him a thankyou postcard. Part of his radio charm was his lovely voice, Ady Croasdell was mistaken for him in Belgium after doing a show, praise indeed! You can ask anyone my age and they will say he shaped our generation.
  16. Is your name Chris Gwatkin? I've seen fashiony types around the Smoke wearing T-shirts with the fist, circled by the caption: LONDON UNION SOUL CLUB. They're made to look dingey (pre-dinged?), does that imply something about the scene? And where's this club - sounds great!
  17. You're gonna wreck my life - Guitar Ray mais oui

Yes don't worry, I remember it too, I wasn't keen on Manning but I liked the filthy little bloke who used to ring the bell. But I suppose it was a real club, do you know where? Or if it's still standing?...

Of course, she does it with flair and great confidence. Does the Wheel-tappers actually exist? Will there be a tombola with a meat prize or a bottle of Teachers to be won?

I notice the women get all self-depracating when it comes to mic talk, I too think I would sound squeaky. I had a row (discussion) with Ady C about it once, he didn't understand my reservations, he's a top entertainer though and is very good at mic work. I guess it's hard when you're new and concentrating on things flowing right...

and are you the only gay in the village?
  22. Don't I put fine rags on your back Kolla? Wend, as a big HOUSE officianado I'd have thought you'd go for some of the really modern stuff. I'm afraid you won't get to Seriously Soulfull for a while as it's suspended for a while but as Brett said, George jackson down at Smersh is a must.
  23. The last dance lesson was indeed a laugh, we all joined in and it provided a great excuse to chat about it and gain confidence. I know (Janine) Trickster sometimes has a certain turn of phrase but he doesn't mean anything bad by it, he wants good dancers down there too. Are the people bitching about this such great dancers that they have nothing to learn? See you Wednesday
  24. what's that on your finger - Kenny Carter, could be played after the ring bit, though the question might seem a bit obvious...
